Bhubaneswar:
Odisha police
plan to enhance security deployment for this year's Rath Yatra at Puri, considering the current Indo-Pak tensions, according to police sources.Director general of police Y B Khurania and over a dozen other senior IPS officers began the exercise by undertaking a comprehensive security assessment on Monday at Puri for the forthcoming annual festival, scheduled for June 27.
Timing of the security review assumes significance due to the present security dynamics in the country.Following the Pahalgam terror incident and Operation Sindoor, the govt has already enhanced security measures at the historic 12th century shrine with armed commandos and light armoured vehicle (LAV) deployment. The DGP examined the security arrangements at the Jagannath temple and Ratha Khala, a workplace near the temple where the chariot construction is going on.Anticipating the arrival of over 10 lakh devotees, the DGP emphasised comprehensive CCTV monitoring. He noted that live surveillance and crowd control would be essential for public safety. The DGP's meeting focused on gathering intelligence and securing the Puri coastline against possible seaborne threats."Last year's Rath Yatra saw the deployment of around 6,500 police personnel, including 180 platoons of state force. This year, we intend to increase the deployment in view of the heightened border tensions. The exact size and nature of the deployment will be finalised soon," a senior police officer told TOI, without disclosing much for security reasons.DGP Khurania said massive preparations are underway. "A foolproof security arrangement is being finalised for the safe and smooth conduct of Rath Yatra. Safety of devotees, security of Jagannath temple, crowd control and traffic management are our focus areas," Khurania said. He detailed extensive security measures for this global event, taking into account the expected crowds and VIP visitors.Officials are taking precautions to avoid possible stampedes during chariot pulling. The previous Rath Yatra on July 7, 2024 recorded one death and over 300 people fainting among roughly 10 lakh attendees. A disturbance near Lord Balabhadra's chariot at 6.30 pm during the pulling ceremony caused several injuries.Continuing previous practices, police authorities will use AI-enabled CCTV cameras and drone monitoring along the Grand Road facing the Jagannath temple. Police will implement advanced facial recognition technology at 343 locations between Bhubaneswar and Puri, covering 32 points along NH-316 between Uttara and Malatipatpur, 65 beach areas, 38 Grand Road locations, and 55 spots within Puri's streets.Recently, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja directed Puri's district administration and police to create a unified standard operating procedure (SOP) for the festival. He recommended establishing an integrated command control centre (ICCC) for better departmental coordination.

$3 trillion economy goal for Telangana by 2047 when India turns 100, says CM A Revanth Reddy

Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy HYDERABAD: On the occasion of the 11th Telangana Formation Day on Monday, chief minister A Revanth Reddy set a new target of making the state a $3 trillion economy by 2047 and increasing its contribution to the GDP from 5% to 10%. Speaking at the Formation Day celebrations at Parade Grounds, the CM presented the progress report of the 16-month-old Congress govt and sought the cooperation of all political parties, bureaucracy, industrialists and all sections in the state to make Telangana number one in the country. He said the state govt was working in mission mode to ensure that Telangana plays a pivotal role in developing India into a $30 trillion economy by 2047 when the country would celebrate its Independence centenary. "As part of it, the Telangana Rising 2047 action plan has been prepared to turn the state into a $1 trillion economy in the next 10 years and $3 trillion by 2047. The govt has plans to not only develop Telangana as the number one state in the country but also make it capable of competing with the world," the CM said. While sharing several achievements of the state govt such as Rs 20,600 crore crop loan waiver for farmers, nearly 60,000 govt and one lakh private jobs for the unemployed and other welfare schemes, the CM referred to the apolitical stand of the Congress govt in Telangana for the country by extending full support to the Centre and the armed forces during Operation Sindoor.

No one needed to persuade us: Shashi Tharoor shuts down Trump's India-Pak claim

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party Operation Sindoor delegation abroad, denied any involvement of a third party in the ceasefire understanding reached between India and Pakistan. Tharoor, who is currently in Brazil, made the remarks ahead of his delegation's visit to the United said India did not need any persuasion for a ceasefire as the country never wanted have enormous respect for the American presidency, and we will speak with that respect in mind. But broadly speaking, our understanding is a bit different... No one needed to persuade us to stop. We had already said to stop," he said. Tharoor said the Pakistani side must have needed some persuasion."If there was any persuasion by the American president or his senior officials, it would have been persuasion of the Pakistanis. They would have had to be persuaded. We don't need to be persuaded because we don't want war. We want to focus on development. That's the basic message," he Tharoor said that India never wanted the conflict to escalate but had to react because Pakistan says, ".... We had consistently said from the very beginning on May 7th that we are not interested in prolonging the conflict. This is not the opening salvo in some sort of war. All it is is retribution against the terrorists, period. If Pakistan had not reacted, we would not have reacted..."advertisementTharoor's remarks came in response to Donald Trump's repeated claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after four days of missile and drone strikes. Trump was also the first one to announce the news to the world and later Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held confirmed the same during a press India has categorically denied claims of mediation and said the understanding was reached after Pakistan's DGMO called his Indian counterpart. Both countries agreed to ceasefire on May 10 after Pakistan escalated following India's Operation Central government formed seven teams of leaders across parties to brief countries on India's Operation Sindoor and Pakistan's support for terrorism. Following the suite, Islamabad also planned the same move and handed the responsibility to Bilawal the delegations will be in the US at the same time. Commenting on Pakistan's move, Tharoor called it an "interesting phenomenon". "In Washington, we'll have the interesting phenomenon of the Pakistani delegation in America, and almost exactly the same days... Tomorrow almost they will be in Washington, while we are in Washington on the same date. So there's going to be perhaps an increase in interest because there are two duelling delegations in the same city," Tharoor said.

BREAKING! Punjab man held for ‘spying' for Pakistan; cops say he shared information on Army movements during Op Sindoor

Punjab Police arrested a man for being in contact with Pakistan's ISI and sharing sensitive information concerning army movements during Operation Sindhoor, DGP Punjab Police said on Tuesday. Gagandeep Singh, aka Gagan, was arrested after information was received from the Counter Intelligence Unit of the Punjab Police. The DGP said that Gagan is accused of engaging in sharing classified details, including troop deployments and strategic locations, posing a threat to national security. Preliminary investigation revealed that Gagan had been in touch with Pakistan-based Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years, through whom he was introduced to the Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). He also received payments from PIOs via Indian channels, the DGP said in a post on X. A mobile phone containing intelligence that he shared with the PIOs, as well as the details of over 20 ISI contacts, has been recovered. An FIR has been registered under the Official Secrets Act at PS City, Tarn Taran, and further investigation is in progress, the DGP added. (This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates)
