'Devastating' disturbing film based on a true story comes to Amazon Prime Video

Metro13-05-2025

A film guaranteed to leave you weeping and wailing has landed on Amazon Prime Video.
Released in 2008, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas shows war from the gut-wrenching, innocent perspective of a child as eight-year-old boys Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) strike up a forbidden friendship.
Set during World War II, Bruno moves with his parents and sister from Berlin to a new home by a concentration camp, where his father (David Thewlis) has just become the commandant.
As the youngster wanders off out of boredom, unbeknownst to his family, Bruno grows close with the Jewish boy behind the barbed-wire fence, visiting him frequently without a clue about what's truly happening on what he believes is a 'farm.'
Their special bond ultimately has devastating consequences, and it's safe to say the movie's final twist packs a real punch.
Despite being released almost 20 years ago, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas remains a hugely popular, albeit divisive, film.
Based on John Boyne's book of the same name, it is often shown in schools to offer students an emotional insight into the Holocaust and generate discussions.
However, despite receiving generally positive reviews for its emotional storytelling upon its initial release, it also garnered criticism for 'misrepresenting' and 'trivialising' elements of war.
But now you can decide for yourself, as the 94-minute historical drama is available to stream.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has a 65% rating overall from critics on review platform Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers have scored it 85%.
Among the feedback, Richard Crouse writes that it will 'take your breath away,' while Mike Massie says 'this is a film that cannot be easily forgotten.'
'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas may very well be 2008's most important family film [sic],' says Richard Propes.
'Even in its lighter moments, the picture never downplays the horror of the situation, and the devastating ending is potent enough to affect even those viewers who write it off as nothing more than a sensationalist stunt,' argues Matt Brunson.
'A movie so horrific it haunts your dreams but so fascinating you can't turn your eyes away from it,' Jackie K. Cooper pens.
In contrast, though, some suggest that the plot is 'too manufactured' and 'gimmicky'.
Since it was released, there's no denying that child actor Asa, now 28, has forged a successful career for himself.
He was 10 when he made The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, with director Mark Herman saying they came across him early on in the audition process.
In the years since, he's appeared in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and, most famously, took the lead in Netflix series Sex Education, starring opposite Gillian Anderson. More Trending
As for Jack, the now 26-year-old lives a quieter life.
Both he and co-star Asa were nominated for the Young Artist Awards thanks to their performances in the movie, with Jack going on to star in the BBC miniseries Runaway in 2009.
He remained close friends with Asa after the pair were plucked from obscurity to star in what would become a hit film; however, Jack no longer acts.
Watch The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas on Amazon Prime Video.

David Beckham's feud with son Brooklyn and staggering net worth close to King Charles'

David Beckham's feud with son Brooklyn and staggering net worth close to King Charles' David Beckham is finally set to receive a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list next week, as his reported family feud with son Brooklyn shows no signs of ending any time soon Brooklyn Beckham reportedly has a fractured relationship with his father (Image: Getty Images ) David Beckham is set to become a sir next week when he finally receives a knighthood in King Charles III's Birthday Honours list. The English footballing icon, who turned 50 in May, has long seen calls to have the honour bestowed upon him given his impact on the game and his notable donations to charity over the years. And now, according to The Sun, it appears as though Beckham will finally get the recognition that many fans believe he deserves. ‌ It comes after the King dropped a major hint towards a knighthood when he and Queen Camilla were greeted by Beckham at the Chelsea Flower Show last month. Charles asked: "You got it, didn't you?" That prompted Beckham to respond: "It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind." ‌ Beckham made a name for himself with Manchester United between 1992 and 2003, before a big money move saw him join Real Madrid. He also enjoyed stints with LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain before hanging up his boots in 2013. However, Beckham also received 115 caps for the England national team over the course of his incredible career – eventually becoming the captain of the Three Lions during its golden generation. Now a co-owner of Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami, Beckham has seen his net worth continue to grow. It was announced earlier this year by the Sunday Times' Rich List that alongside wife, Victoria – who enjoyed a notable singing career of her own with the Spice Girls before venturing into the world of fashion – Beckham's net worth had grown by £45million over the last 12 months to a total of around £500m. Article continues below That takes the power couple's estimated fortune to just £140m shy of King Charles III's worth, according to the same publication. Unsurprisingly, a large portion of Beckham's net worth comes from his time on the pitch, given that he was paid £188m over the course of his five years with LA Galaxy alone. David Beckham will see a knighthood from King Charles III (Image: PA ) Meanwhile, lucrative brand and endorsement deals with the likes of Emporio Armani, Gillette, PepsiCo, Breitling and Adidas over the years will have helped Beckham bolster his bank balance further, while his eponymous 'Beckham' Netflix series is said to have earned him another £28m. ‌ And that's not to mention Victoria's career earnings with the Spice Girls – who remain as the top-selling girl group of all time with more than 100m records sold globally – as well as her VB designer clothing range. While Beckham's recent news of a knighthood may lead to familial celebrations, it may not be enough to mend his reportedly fractured relationship with son, Brooklyn. The two are said to have fallen out back in 2022, although the exact reason for the dispute remains unknown. Brooklyn did not attend his father's 50th birthday party earlier this year, with his wife Nicola Peltz pinning the blame his brother Romeo's then girlfriend, Kim Turnbull. ‌ Brooklyn Beckham is married to Nicola Peltz (Image: Getty Images for Airbnb ) Nicola's friends claimed that this was due to Brooklyn having a brief romantic liaison with Kim before his brother dated her, but his friends denied this. The sources, who spoke to the Mirror, also claimed that the Beckham's "chose Kim over Brooklyn." However, friends of the family also noted that this characterisation was fiction, and that Kim had cruelly been "thrown under the bus." After the recent news of Romeo and Kim splitting amicably broke this week, a source claimed that it would not change things within the family, explaining: "There are no signs of reconciliation, sadly. There is still a lot of hurt to process." Article continues below Meanwhile, insiders close to Nicola have previously said that as "an outsider coming into the Beckham family, she has helped Brooklyn see the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour within." These claims, which were dubbed "patently untrue and ludicrous" by friends of David and Victoria, were the "nail in the coffin" of a future relationship, as per sources. One said: "It was a low, low blow... how can you say such things about your own family. It will be interesting to see if Brooklyn and Nicola make any attempt to heal things now Kim is out of the picture."

EastEnders confirms end of an era as huge change is confirmed

It's the end of an era in EastEnders next week, and a change in the BBC soap's credits will reflect the change. I am, of course, referring to the departure of much-celebrated Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw. The 38 year old TV boss announced he was stepping down from the show last year, having sailed the broadcaster's flagship programme out of murky waters and into an era of unmissable viewing. Fans were naturally devastated, given he was instrumental in some of the greatest plots we've seen in years – from The Six's involvement in Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) murder, to Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden) recent mental health crisis. There was also Cindy Beale's (Michelle Collins) return from the 'dead' after 25 years, two Mitchell flashback episodes and the recent 40th anniversary live episode. He created the Knights; the first Black and dual heritage family to run a pub on any UK soap, headed up by Colin Salmon, and has brought back fan favourites including Adam Woodyatt, Thomas Law, Jacqueline Jossa, Anita Dobson, Angela Wynter and Patsy Palmer. And what a way to end his tenure – last night's British Soap Awards saw EastEnders pick up 8 gongs, including Best British Soap, outperforming their rivals. Ben Wadey, former Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, will be taking over the role. He's no stranger to Albert Square, having worked on the 35th anniversary and also in the studio next door – as Story Producer for the final series of Holby City. Chris' final episode will air on Friday, June 13, with Ben's first episode airing the following Monday, June 16. Speaking about his new role as Executive Producer, Ben Wadey said: 'I'm thrilled to be returning to EastEnders at such an exciting time for the show. 'Having grown up watching and loving EastEnders, it sparked my passion for television, and I feel I've known the residents of Walford my entire life – so to lead this iconic BBC soap into its next chapter is a true privilege. 'I can't wait to collaborate with the exceptional team at EastEnders and build on Chris Clenshaw's brilliant work to deliver unmissable stories to fans – both those who have been watching for years and those just discovering Albert Square.' Speaking of his decision to leave, Chris added: 'As a proud EastEnders fan, it has been the honour of my life to be its custodian. It has meant everything to me, and I've given Walford my all. 'I made the tough decision that I would step down after the 40th anniversary many months ago – to keep EastEnders creatively refreshed as it's a show that needs to constantly evolve. After what will be three years at the helm and leading the team through its milestone celebrations, the time feels right that I hand over the keys to The Queen Vic. 'Elstree holds a special place in my heart. My special thanks go to the sensational EastEnders cast and crew that I'm incredibly proud to have led over the past few years, and who have provided me with unwavering support. 'Their commitment, passion and talent has inspired me every day, and I am so grateful to them and proud of everything that we've achieved together. More Trending 'EastEnders has been the highlight of my career and I have loved every minute of it, but it's time for change, and for a new chapter, and I'm delighted to be staying within BBC Studios Drama Productions. 'I'm pleased to be passing the show on to Ben Wadey. I'm confident that, under him, EastEnders will continue to thrive, and I wish him the very best as it is without doubt the best job in telly and I hope he enjoys the ride just as much as I have. Thank you, EastEnders – for everything.' After departing EastEnders, Chris will continue working for BBC Studios Drama Productions. Pembrokeshire people at BBC Make a Difference Awards

The BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025 has recognised individuals and groups across the country for their outstanding contributions to their communities. The 32 finalists were selected from more than 700 nominees. Among those representing Pembrokeshire are a retired racehorse and a dedicated environmentalist. Ozzy, under the name Up For An Oscar, a retired racehorse from Pembrokeshire, has been nominated for the Animal Award. Once deemed unmanageable, Ozzy now serves as a therapy horse at Redberth Croft CIC, offering vital support to vulnerable individuals. Sharron Taylor is another Pembrokeshire representative shortlisted for her efforts in the Green Award category. The founder of Tipi Fields, Ms Taylor has made a significant impact on her local environment and community by cleaning coastlines of debris and marine waste. Her work doesn't stop at tidying up the coast; Ms Taylor also transforms the waste into unique, handcrafted items, breathing new life into discarded materials. BBC Radio Wales' Lucy Owen praised the nominees, saying: "We're absolutely blown away by the nominations we've had. "There are so many wonderful stories about community groups making a huge difference in their local areas and outstanding individuals committed to bringing people together, fundraising for good causes and caring for others." BBC Radio Cymru's Shân Cothi added: "Over 700 nominations for our very first Make a Difference Awards in Wales says so much about who we are as a nation. "It's incredible to hear about some of the amazing things that people are doing right across Wales. "A huge congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to all of our brilliant finalists." The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges from the BBC, including well-known presenters like Katie Owen, Lauren Price, and Gethin Jones. The successful community heroes will be announced at the awards ceremony on September 20 in Cardiff. The BBC Cymru Wales Make a Difference Awards 2025 aim to celebrate and acknowledge the people who go above and beyond in their communities, shining a light on these often-unsung heroes. This is the first year the awards have been held in Wales. A full list of the categories and finalists is available on the BBC's Make a Difference Awards website. The event, led by BBC Cymru Wales, is set to become an annual celebration of community spirit and selfless dedication.
