Chhattisgarh Armed Force official shoots himself dead in Kondagaon
Kondagaon, Aug 4 (PTI) An official of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Kondagaon district, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday night at the camp of the CAF's 2nd battalion in Bayanar village, said Kaushalendra Dev Patel, additional superintendent of police, Konagaon.
He said Dinesh Singh Chandel, a platoon commander, shot himself with his AK-47 rifle, inside his room in the camp.
On hearing the gunshot, his colleagues rushed to the scene and found him dead, the official said.
While the exact cause for the extreme step was yet to be ascertained, prima facie, it appears that Chandel committed suicide due to family issues, he said.
Chandel was a resident of Bhilai in Durg district, and further probe into the matter is underway, Patel added.
On July 30, a constable of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon in Bijapur district.
According to the state home department, 177 security personnel committed suicide in the state between 2019 and June 15, 2025. PTI COR TKP ARU

Mumbai woman tries of order milk online, ends up losing Rs 18.5 lakh
Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) A 71-year-old woman from Mumbai allegedly lost Rs 18.5 lakh from her bank accounts while attempting to order a litre of milk online, police said on Saturday. The woman, a resident of Wadala, was allegedly duped of her entire bank savings in two days when she attempted to order milk from an online delivery app earlier this month, an official said. On August 4, the woman received a call from a man identifying himself as Deepak, an executive from the milk company, who sent a link to her mobile phone number asking her to furnish her details to order milk, the official said. He said the woman was instructed to click on the link without disconnecting the call and follow further instructions. As the call went on for more than an hour, the complainant got bored and decided to hang up. The official said that the next day, the complainant received a phone call from the same accused, who gathered more details from her. During a routine bank visit in the following days, the complainant discovered that Rs 1.7 lakh had been siphoned off from one of her accounts, and on checking further, she found that her other two bank accounts had also been emptied. According to the police, the complainant lost Rs 18.5 lakh as all three bank accounts were emptied. The accused allegedly managed to hack into the complainant's phone after she clicked on the link he sent to her mobile phone. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case earlier this week, and a probe is underway, the official said. Padma Shri awardee former swimmer Bula Chowdhury said thieves have stolen medals and mementos from her ancestral home in West Bengal's Hooghly district. Ms. Chowdhury said she lost everything she had earned in her entire life. "Thieves have taken away everything I earned in my entire life through my hard work and dedication. All medals, including the six gold medals I won at the SAAF Games and the Padma Shri brooch, have been stolen," Ms. Chowdhury told PTI on Friday (August 15, 2025). The former swimmer alleged that the thieves have also stolen all the mementos but left the Arjuna Award and the Tenzing Norgay medals. "Probably they did not recognise the Arjuna Award and the Tenzing Norgay medals, as they were smaller in size," she said. Ms. Chowdhury alleged that it was the third theft at her Hindmotor residence, which remained under lock and key, and she visited the property periodically. Currently living in Kolkata's Kasba area with her family, Ms. Chowdhury's ancestral home is looked after by her brother, Milon Chowdhury, who lives some distance away and occasionally visits to check on it. "On Independence Day, which was a holiday, Milon went to the house to clean it on his sister's instructions. On entering, he was shocked to find the rear gate broken and the rooms ransacked," police said. Ms. Chowdhury, who rushed from Kolkata to Uttarpara upon receiving the news, recalled that thefts had occurred before and alleged that although police complaints were lodged, no proper investigation had been done. "Why are they taking medals? They won't get any money for them. They are treasures of my life, the fruits of my career. My house is targeted every time because it stays empty," she said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, a senior police officer said.

Thane-based firm dupes man of Rs 23.5 lakh in share trading fraud; six booked
Thane, Aug 16 (PTI) A 44-year-old man was allegedly duped of Rs 23.5 lakh by the owner of a financial services company in Maharashtra's Thane district and his associates, who lured him to invest in share trading, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against a Diva-based firm's owner and five associates under sections 316(2), 316(5) (criminal breach of trust), 318(4) (cheating) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the crime that took place between March and August, an official said. The complainant, who owns a medical store, has alleged that the accused lured him to invest in share trading, he said. 'The complainant was induced to make repeated payments with the assurance of high returns. However, when he demanded his profits or the principal investment back, he was allegedly abused in slang and threatened with dire consequences," the official from Mumbra police said. The complainant approached the police on Wednesday. 'The accused allegedly threatened to kill the complainant and his family members when he insisted on repayment," the official said, adding that a probe is underway into the firm's operations and transactions.
