Padma Shri awardee former swimmer Bula Chowdhury's medals stolen from her ancestral Bengal home
Ms. Chowdhury said she lost everything she had earned in her entire life.
"Thieves have taken away everything I earned in my entire life through my hard work and dedication. All medals, including the six gold medals I won at the SAAF Games and the Padma Shri brooch, have been stolen," Ms. Chowdhury told PTI on Friday (August 15, 2025).
The former swimmer alleged that the thieves have also stolen all the mementos but left the Arjuna Award and the Tenzing Norgay medals.
"Probably they did not recognise the Arjuna Award and the Tenzing Norgay medals, as they were smaller in size," she said.
Ms. Chowdhury alleged that it was the third theft at her Hindmotor residence, which remained under lock and key, and she visited the property periodically.
Currently living in Kolkata's Kasba area with her family, Ms. Chowdhury's ancestral home is looked after by her brother, Milon Chowdhury, who lives some distance away and occasionally visits to check on it.
"On Independence Day, which was a holiday, Milon went to the house to clean it on his sister's instructions. On entering, he was shocked to find the rear gate broken and the rooms ransacked," police said.
Ms. Chowdhury, who rushed from Kolkata to Uttarpara upon receiving the news, recalled that thefts had occurred before and alleged that although police complaints were lodged, no proper investigation had been done.
"Why are they taking medals? They won't get any money for them. They are treasures of my life, the fruits of my career. My house is targeted every time because it stays empty," she said.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, a senior police officer said.

1 2 Kolkata/Hindmotor: Thieves broke into the Hindmotor house of former ace swimmer Bula Choudhury and cleaned up her trophy cabinet that contained almost all her awards — over 150 medals and mementos that she had won during a career spanning more than a decade-and-a-half. The loss included the Padma Shri brooch she received in 2009 and 10 gold medals won at two editions of the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games. An inconsolable Choudhury said: "They took away things that are of no value to them but invaluable to me. From 1979, when I started competing as a nine-year-old, till I retired in 1995, all that I earned were medals. They are all gone." This is the third theft at the house christened 'Sundar Bari'. It was her brother Dolan, who discovered the theft on Friday, when he opened the house to have it cleaned. Even the stop cocks in the cisterns are missing," said Dolan. While the padlock on the front door was intact, the lock on the grille at the back of the house was pried open. The accused had cut the back door. Chandernagore deputy commissioner of police Arnab Biswas said, "The house, located at the corner of a road, had been closed for about a month. It is unclear when thieves broke in." Police suspect two persons were involved. Five suspects have been picked up for interrogation. Student dies in mishap at time of I-Day function in Jodhpur
1 2 Jodhpur: A 12-year-old school student died here after being hit by a dumper truck early morning on Independence Day, while three other students accompanying him were seriously injured. All four were heading to their school on one motorcycle. Enraged family members and local residents staged a protest and blocked the road at Panchbatti Chowk. They were joined by Congress leaders to support their demands. They demanded strict action against the guilty dumper driver, along with compensation, an impartial investigation, and a job for one member of the family. After several hours of discussions, the protest was called off following an assurance of immediate financial aid of Rs 11 lakh from the CM Relief Fund, along with a promise to provide a contractual job to one dependent of the family and to extend benefits of govt schemes by the administration. SHO (Airport) Ramkrishna Tada said all four children were on the same bike, were minors, and not wearing any helmets. "In front of Hotel Radisson, their bike skidded and they fell down while overtaking a small truck loaded with stones. Wheels of the truck ran over Lokendra Singh, crushing him to death on the spot while injuring three others, and the driver fled from the spot," Tada said, adding that a distant camera recording has shown the victims going behind the truck. "We have seized the dumper and detained the driver," said Tada, adding that two injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital, while one was discharged after primary treatment. Firing between rival gangs rocks Jodhpur
Jodhpur: There was an abrupt surge in incidents of firing in Jodhpur around Independence Day. After an incident on Aug 14 in Paota area, where a bullet shot by an unidentified person hit a female student in her elbow, yet another incident of firing amid gang rivalry near Ummed Stadium on Saturday unleashed panic in the city. The firing took place barely a few meters away from the local police post. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, showing members of rival gangs fighting. It is reported that after the physical clash, persons from one gang opened fire on the other. However, nobody was reported hurt in the firing. As soon as information was received, a police team reached the spot and began an investigation. Police officers said they are gathering details by speaking with local residents, while also working to identify the accused with the help of nearby CCTV cameras. SHO (Udai Mandir) Sitaram Khoja said the firing was due to gang rivalry and was aimed at threatening the other gang. "We have registered a case and initiated investigation," Khoja said. The two gangs involved have been identified as the Tantiya gang and the NCR gang. The firing is said to have been carried out by the members of the NCR gang.
