Student dies in mishap at time of I-Day function in Jodhpur
2
Jodhpur: A 12-year-old school student died here after being hit by a dumper truck early morning on Independence Day, while three other students accompanying him were seriously injured.
All four were heading to their school on one motorcycle.
Enraged family members and local residents staged a protest and blocked the road at Panchbatti Chowk. They were joined by Congress leaders to support their demands. They demanded strict action against the guilty dumper driver, along with compensation, an impartial investigation, and a job for one member of the family.
After several hours of discussions, the protest was called off following an assurance of immediate financial aid of Rs 11 lakh from the CM Relief Fund, along with a promise to provide a contractual job to one dependent of the family and to extend benefits of govt schemes by the administration.
This incident took place at a time when Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma was scheduled to attend an Independence Day programme at the Shaheed Memorial in Jodhpur, barely a few meters away from the accident spot. As soon as news of the accident spread, panic spread through the police administration. In view of the chief minister's visit, a large police force immediately reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

Police said the accident took place when Lokendra (12), a resident of Ratanada Nehru Colony, was riding a bike with three of his schoolmates to attend the Independence Day function at his school. SHO (Airport) Ramkrishna Tada said all four children were on the same bike, were minors, and not wearing any helmets.
"In front of Hotel Radisson, their bike skidded and they fell down while overtaking a small truck loaded with stones.
Wheels of the truck ran over Lokendra Singh, crushing him to death on the spot while injuring three others, and the driver fled from the spot," Tada said, adding that a distant camera recording has shown the victims going behind the truck.
"We have seized the dumper and detained the driver," said Tada, adding that two injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital, while one was discharged after primary treatment. Swinging into action, police swiftly removed the dead body from the spot and arranged to clean the spot in view of the chief minister's convoy, which had to head to the airport.
The family members also demanded that Chief Minister Sharma, who was in the city for the state-level Independence
Day celebration, come to the spot and talk to them. But given the demonstration, the administrative officials changed the route of the chief minister to the airport, who was to board the flight back to Jaipur.

UDF Opposition seeks to weaponise leak of confidential complaint to CPI(M) polit bureau, accusing certain Kerala leaders of corruption
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition on Sunday (August 17, 2025) sought to politically weaponise the media leak of a purported 'confidential complaint' to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] polit bureau, reportedly accusing an assemblage of party leaders from Kerala, including former Ministers, of partnering in financial shenanigans allegedly enabled by a U.K.-based business person from the State. Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, who demanded a clarification from the party and government on the veracity of the accusation, pointed out that the controversial letter, which grabbed headlines in Kerala, was adduced as evidence in a libel suit in New Delhi involving two business persons with apparent CPI(M) connections. UDF demands CM's resignation after court accuses political executive of subverting anti-corruption probe against ADGP He said the crux of the litigation appeared to be bitter feuding between two business rivals for the patronage of powerful CPI(M) leaders. 'Financial transactions gone awry might also have fuelled the disagreement, which has put the CPI(M) on the defensive in Kerala,' he added. Mr. Satheesan noted that the U.K.-based businessperson was an invitee to the CPI(M)'s 24th party conference in Madurai in April 2025 and a member of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government-sponsored Kerala Loka Sabha. Mr. Satheesan said the NRI's rival objected to the businessperson's presence at the conference and later submitted a lengthy letter loaded with accusations of financial fraud, including possible FEMA violations allegedly involving CPI(M) leaders in Kerala. Vigilance court verdict on ADGP validates Opposition's claim, says Satheesan Mr. Satheesan said the serious imputations in the letter, if true, prima facie warranted investigation under the provisions of the anti-money laundering law. 'For one, the accuser alleged in the letter that the previous LDF government routed major projects to a paper company floated by the NRI businessperson in Chennai. Is this a classic case of reverse hawala?' he said. V.D. Satheesan assures to field CMP candidates from more than one seat in 2026 Assembly elections 'I am not taking names at this juncture. However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan owed the public an explanation. It's also mystifying how the confidential letter to the CPI(M) polit bureau ended in the possession of an NRI businessperson to adduce as evidence in court. It seems the letter's leak has brought to the fore the hidden but deeply entrenched fissures in the CPI(M) leadership in Kerala,' he stated. The CPI(M) was yet to react to Mr. Satheesan's accusations. Attempts to seek a comment about Mr. Satheesan's allegations from a few leaders were yet to yield a response.

Andhra Pradesh honey-trap case: Prime accused Joy Jamima rearrested; police suspect more victims
VISAKHAPATNAM: The investigation into the honey-trap case has revealed more details, with police saying the prime accused, 28-year-old Koruprolu Joy Jamima, and her accomplices cheated several men, including wealthy individuals, an NRI and a few from Vizag city and nearby areas, under the pretext of love and marriage. The gang allegedly extorted large sums of money from the victims. Police said the exact number of victims remains unclear, as only a few have reported the crime. Jamima was first arrested by Bheemili police in October 2024 for duping an NRI man through Instagram. She allegedly lured him to Vizag, confined him in a room with the help of her gang, drugged him, and then posed for photos that were later used to blackmail him for money. Recently released on bail, Jamima was arrested again by MVP police in August 2025 for allegedly cheating another man using the same modus operandi. So far, Bheemili, Kancharapalem and MVP police have registered cases against her for duping more than four people. According to a senior police officer, Jamima used to contact wealthy individuals through social media, befriend them, and then lure them to guest houses or private places. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is crazy about it Undo There, she allegedly offered them sedative-laced drinks, after which her accomplices took private photographs and threatened to upload them online unless money was paid. Police said Jamima also filed false complaints against some men, alleging that she had been deceived or sexually assaulted under the guise of marriage, before using the cases to blackmail and extort them. Five members of the honey-trap gang, including another key accused, Polamarasetti Ratnaraju, have been arrested. Investigations have shown that large sums of money were transferred between Jamima and Ratnaraju. Although the number of victims is still uncertain, police suspect several men in Vizag and the surrounding areas may have fallen prey to the gang but have not come forward out of fear or shame. Vizag City Police Chief Dr Shanka Brata Bagchi appealed that "if anyone turned out to be a victim in the honey trap case, they can approach the police as their identity will not be revealed."
