HAL, BEL, Bharat Dynamics: Defence stocks rally up to 7% amid Indo-Pak tensions
Escalating tensions with Pakistan have sparked a sharp rally in defence stocks, with investors rushing to price in a potential surge in demand for defence equipment and systems. Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Bharat Dynamics (BDL), Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), and Paras Defence jumped between 2 and 7% in Friday's trade, outperforming a jittery broader market shaken by geopolitical uncertainty. The surge follows India's precision missile strikes on nine identified terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. As tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, shares of defence companies such as Bharat Forge, Paras Defence, BEL and HAL were among the top movers on the BSE, with strong interest also seen in Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Cochin Shipyard, BEML, and Data Patterns. The rally comes amid reports that the Modi government has called top defence manufacturers to Delhi next week, possibly to discuss scaling up production readiness. 'We've been called to Delhi next week. Our team is going. I can't say more,' Bharat Forge Chairman and MD Baba Kalyani told CNBC-TV18, fuelling further speculation around a rapid push for defence readiness.Brokerages have already been bullish on the sector. Nuvama recently projected a $130 billion defence opportunity over the next five years, with the Air Force and Navy accounting for the bulk of upcoming capex.HAL's LCA Tejas and Sukhoi upgrade programs, BDL's missile systems including Akash and Astra, and BEL's radar and electronic warfare offerings are expected to see renewed government orders as part of India's ongoing military modernisation drive. The Indian defence budget for FY26 stands at Rs 6.81 lakh crore, with Rs 1.8 lakh crore earmarked for capital expenditure. With fresh tensions on the border and cross-border strikes back in the spotlight, investors appear confident that these budget allocations may be revised upward or fast-tracked.Meanwhile, tensions remain high across the Line of Control. Pakistan retaliated with missile and drone attacks late Thursday, prompting India to activate its air defence systems. Explosions were reported in parts of Jammu and Kashmir as drones were intercepted mid-air. Sirens and blackouts were imposed in border towns across Punjab and Rajasthan as civilians scrambled for cover.International reactions have been cautious. US Vice President JD Vance ruled out direct involvement, saying Washington would not intervene in 'a war that's fundamentally none of our business,' but urged both nations to pursue de-escalation.advertisement(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. Tvm airport expansion gets boost as funds are secured
T'puram: The expansion plans of city airport received a boost after Adani Airports raised $750 million in external commercial borrowings to enhance infrastructure at its six airports. Of this, Rs 1,300 crore will be allocated for Project Anantha and Rs 700 crore for other upgrades, including measures to support the expansion of non-aeronautical businesses like retail, food and beverages, duty-free and other services. The upgrades will begin soon, while the new project will start shortly after approvals are ready. An airport official said that funds were not an issue and the company would use its funds, but now the money was raised specifically for airport upgrades. "The project can now be taken up smoothly as dedicated funds have come. The money will be used to upgrade the six airports run by the group – Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangalore, Jaipur and Guwahati". Project Anantha envisages an investment of Rs 1,300 crore over three years for the expansion of Terminal 2. The existing 45,000 sq m currently handling 3.2 million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) will be enhanced to 1,65,000 sq m to handle almost 12 MPPA with a multi-level Curb Integrated Terminal. The new terminal will also have a forecourt with an airport plaza, a hotel, and a commercial and administration block. There will be more space for car parking. A new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, an international cargo complex and a remote check-in facility landside will create a completely new airport complex, said a statement from Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. "The clearances are the only thing that we are waiting for. The plan and the funds are ready," he added. A long-term expansion is also being considered, as the company submitted a broader masterplan worth Rs 3,000 crore to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority. This includes the redevelopment of Terminals 1 and 2 and other work designed to handle 27 million passengers by 2034. The airport already completed some of the upgrades, like runway recarpeting, improving ground lighting and airside signage. The refurbishment of Terminal 1 is ongoing as part of upgrade work and will be completed in two months.

Proud of how MPs advocated India's voice, says PM Modi
NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday commended the seven multi-party delegations for effectively representing India's stance in global capitals following Operation Sindoor , a decisive strike against terrorist hubs in Pakistan and PoK. "Met members of various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We're all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," PM said on X. Over 50 representatives from the delegations, who visited 33 foreign capitals and the EU, called on Modi to share their experiences. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the PM was "very pleasant" to the delegation members, seeing it as an opportunity to thank them. "He walked around the lawn to different tables, talking to different groups of people... It was a good, lively, informal meeting," Tharoor said, adding that MPs shared insights and suggested such visits be made a regular practice, which the PM seemed to support. The delegations - comprising current and former MPs and ex-diplomats - conveyed India's firm stand against Pakistan-linked terrorism and its commitment to global peace. EAM S Jaishankar had earlier praised the delegations for highlighting India's position.

After Dhruv ALH, Prachand copters cleared for flying
NEW DELHI: The Prachand light combat helicopters have now also been cleared for flying after the Dhruv advanced light helicopters (ALHs) last month. Both the Dhruv and Prachand choppers were grounded after an ALH crash killed two Coast Guard pilots and an aircrew diver in Porbandar on Jan 5. The choppers - manufactured by defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) - were cleared for operations after "some components" were replaced based on the recommendations by a defect investigation committee, an officer said on Tuesday. The Army, which has a fleet of over 180 ALHs, including 60 weaponised versions called 'Rudra', was the most affected by the grounding. Indian Air Force , in turn, has 75 ALHs, while the Navy has 24 and the Coast Guard has 19. The number of Prachand helicopters, in turn, is just 10 in the IAF and five in the Army at present. In March, the defence ministry had inked a mega Rs 62,700 crore contract for 156 such choppers from HAL. The Army will get 90 of them, the IAF 66.
