'Saltwater in my veins': fight to protect island homes

Perth Now16-05-2025

Tishiko King remembers looking out into the ocean as a child, sitting with her grandfather on the steps of their home on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.
"He used to share that if you look after the ocean, the ocean will return you home," the Kulkalaig woman told AAP.
As a child, Ms King didn't quite understand what her grandfather's words meant, but now the 36-year-old marine biologist and self-proclaimed "ocean person" is acutely aware of her responsibility to protect the sea, islands and her community.
"I feel saltwater pumping through my veins - it's the essence of who I am and all the things I do," she said.
"I'm led by my spirit and at the heart of that is my love and deep connection to my island home and the saltwater."
Ms King has already seen the physical and cultural impacts climate change is having on the communities of the Torres Strait.
Rising sea levels have eroded shorelines, flooding islands and threatening homes while impacting burial sites and important ecosystems.
"I remember seeing sea grasses in this bay area (on Masig Island) and as we've seen our oceans warm, that sea grass has disintegrated and our dugong populations have relocated," she said.
"The dugong is one of my ocean totems."
While walking on Masig Island with traditional owner Yessie Mosby, Ms King recalls picking up the bones of ancestors whose burial places had been impacted by rising tides.
"Ice sheets are falling at a rate that is impacting these rising seas," she said.
"Our burial grounds are traditionally buried at the centre of our island."
Sea Country - Malu Lag follows Ms King's resolve to protect her island community.
A new documentary, Sea Country - Malu Lag, follows Ms King's journey from Australia to the United Nations Climate Change council in Dubai, fighting for the ocean and island home she loves.
Ms King worked with clothing brand Patagonia on the film, which also explores the leadership of community members like Mr Mosby as they grapple with the challenges of climate change.
"This is not something where it's in the future, we're seeing this now," Ms King said.
"Torres Strait Islander communities are at the front lines of this climate crisis and are experiencing climate injustices and facing this disproportionate impact, despite contributing the least to global emissions."
Ms King said it was a film for all ocean-lovers and Australians that drew attention to the impacts of climate change in our own backyard.
* Sea Country will be released online on Thursday.

David Beckham 'honoured' by new project days after knighthood reports

David Beckham is "honoured" to be the next guest editor of Country Life magazine. The 50-year-old retired footballer - who bought a £16 million Cotswolds mansion with wife Victoria, 51, in 2016 - is excited to share his passion for the countryside with the publication's readers. He said in a statement: "I am honoured to have been invited to guest edit an edition of a magazine that I have always admired and read. "I am really looking forward to working with the editorial team to produce an issue that will celebrate what the countryside and the great British landscape means to me and my family.' The one-off edition of the magazine is said to include David's best-loved recipe, along with his own rural champions along with those who have helped at his countryside home. The Manchester United legend will also offer an insight into the role the countryside plays in his life. David - who is an avid supporter of the British monarchy - is following in the footsteps of King Charles, who has been guest editor twice, in 2013 and 2018 to mark his 65th and 70th birthdays. In 2020, the Princess Royal was in charge of an issue celebrating her 70th birthday, and the Queen - then known as the Duchess of Cornwell - marked her own 75th birthday three years ago with a special edition. Last week, it was reported David will be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours List, which is set to be announced on Saturday (14.06.25). David has been married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham - with whom he has Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and 13-year-old Harper Seven - since 1999 and The Sun reported that she will become known as Lady Victoria Beckham once her husband is knighted. David will join a select list of his fellow sports stars who have already received the honour, including the likes of the late Sir Bobby Charlton and former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. According to the outlet, David "narrowly missed out" on receiving a knighthood in 2024, and the honour instead went to former England manager Gareth Southgate. In 2003, he was given an OBE by the late Queen Elizabeth for services to football. The former Premier League star has a long history of charitable work, which Honours Committee officials will have considered before deciding to bestow him with the honour.

Pop superstar Katy Perry spotted in local designer ‘onesie'

It is not uncommon to spot a onesie-wearing Australian in the colder months down under but an American superstar has joined in the trend while on tour. Snapped at Luna Park in Sydney, pop superstar Katy Perry was seen in an Aussie designer's fluffy offering looking calm, collected and super comfy. The showbiz queen clearly has good taste as the onesie was from none other than Australian sleepwear king Peter Alexander's collection. So chuffed was the designer he shared the pic on his official Instagram account. There's a bear in there… And it's Katy Perry! Credit: MEDIA-MODE / JaydenSeyfarth/ While a large portion of Australians go to bed wrapped in Alexander's sleepwear, it is nice to know he has an international following too. The fluffy bear onesie appears to be a popular choice and is sold out online with some children's sizes available. The adorable snap also captured Perry holding the hand of her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, whose father is Hollywood superstar Orlando Bloom — Perry's partner since 2016. Days after the Californian diva had a security scare when an audience member charged the stage at her sold-out Qudos Bank Arena show in Sydney, news has surfaced that the A-list couple's relationship may be on the rocks. The couple are contending with rumours of a potential split following Daily Mail reports Perry was spotted without her wedding ring on the tour and following tensions created around the flop of her 2024 album 143. 'Orlando and I, when we argue, we argue kinda hot and fast and then cool really quickly. It's like, 'La la la la la, I love you. Alright, let's move on,'' the pop superstar previously said in 2024. She also mentioned the impact that their domestic blow-ups had on their four-year-old daughter Daisy. 'We are fire, fire, fire, and so [Daisy] sees all of that,' Ms Perry said. 'He's a real sage. We both have parts of ourselves. There's two parts of us, our highest good, and then our carnal, material self. Ego. When the ego is running the show, then it's like, 'Whoa.' But when that's in check, then we're both something else.'' Mr Bloom, who is in New York for the Tribeca Film Festival, has spoken previously about the challenging moments in their partnership. 'Sometimes things are really, really, really, challenging. I won't lie. We definitely battle with our emotions and creativity.' Perry is currently in Melbourne before her tour heads to Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
