Who are the Brits still imprisoned in Dubai after teenager Marcus Fakana released?

Independent07-07-2025
At least three Britons remain detained in Dubai despite the royal family issuing a pardon to the 18-year-old Marcus Fakana.
The Tottenham-born teenager recently returned to the UK after being sentenced to a year in a Dubai prison for having sex with a 17-year-old.
The campaign group Detained in Dubai, which helped secure the Brits' release, say he is now 'recovering' after months in the notorious Al-Awir Central prison, which another British prisoner recently reported to be 'intolerably overcrowded'.
Mr Fakana's case raised questions about the dangers of tourism in the Gulf state as it has become a favourite for Britons, who make up more than seven per cent of Dubai's annual visitors, behind only India, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
But his release does little to allay fears that it remains a dangerous place to be arrested.
British tourists have been imprisoned, shackled and tortured in Dubai over the past decade for petty crimes, including using a counterfeit £20 note and touching another man's hip in a bar, as well as false charges.
Below, The Independent looks at a few of the Brits still held in Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as some previous instances of wrongful detention.
Ryan Cornelius
The 71-year-old father-of-three has spent the last 17 years in Al-Awir on trumped-up charges of fraud.
The UAE says he illegally obtained a £370m loan from the government-affiliated Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) by bribing staff members, but the United Nations says the charge of fraud is unjust, and has called for his immediate release.
Mr Cornelius accuses the DIB, which is chaired by a senior, non-royal government official, of being his 'effective jailers'.
In January, The Independent revealed that Mr Cornelius wrote directly to the Foreign Office urging them to protect him against 'aggressive' prison officials after they tried to force him to sign a document claiming his human rights were being upheld.
In his letter to the Foreign Office, he added that he had been denied access to fresh air and basic facilities. He is already suffering from the cumulative health effects of tuberculosis, Covid and high blood pressure, which have been partially brought on by poor prison conditions.
Mr Cornelius' family have urged the Foreign Office to do more to secure his release.
Charles Ridley
Comparatively less is known about Mr Ridley, the business partner of Mr Cornelius. He, too, was sentenced on charges of fraud following his arrest in 2008.
In a submission to the High Court in 2022, his lawyers said he was 'close to destitute' and facing 'harsh and intolerable' conditions in Al-Awir.
He accused the DIB of breaching a settlement to pay back the loan after they ensured the extension of his sentence in 2018 by 20 years.
Albert Douglas
British grandfather Albert Douglas has been detained in Dubai since February 2021 on charges concerning two bounced cheques, which forensic tests suggest he did not write.
The cheques relate to a business owned by his son, Wolfgang Douglas, which failed in 2019.
Mr Douglas is yet to be convicted of any crime. His son claims his father is being held in prison on trumped-up charges. There is no release date and he has not officially been sentenced.
He claims that Albert is being tortured behind bars, and was strangled in 2023 with a phone cord by another inmate at Al Barsha prison.
In October 2024, it was reported that UAE authorities had added an additional five years to Mr Douglas' time in custody.
Wolfgang has spent £1.4 million trying to get his father freed. He told Detained in Dubai: 'My father loved Dubai, that is, until he was falsely arrested, beaten and tortured by prison guards and convicted of writing a cheque he never wrote.'
Matthew Hedges
The former PhD student was arrested in May 2018 after visiting the UAE for a research trip into aspects of the country's foreign and domestic security strategy.
Mr Hedges was then accused of working for MI6 and "spying for or on behalf of" the UK government, a charge then head of the secret service Sir Alex Younger, personally denied.
For nearly eight months after, the academic says he was interrogated for up to 15 hours a day, force fed a cocktail of medication, kept in a windowless room without a bed and denied regular access to the British embassy and his lawyers. He suffered panic attacks and was placed under intense psychological pressure, before being sentenced to life imprisonment.
It was only after intense, although belated lobbying from the UK government, international outcry and a forced confession that Mr Hedges was pardoned and released on 26 November 2018, the country's National Day. The UAE called it 'gracious clemency'.
Mr Hedges said his ordeal left him with post traumatic stress disorder and insomnia. He still has to take drugs seven years later as a result of being force fed medication.
Billy Barclay
Edinburgh-native Billy Barclay spent three days in a Dubai jail in 2018 while his mother was dying in hospital after he was caught using a £20 counterfeit note at a currency exchange.
Jamie Harron
Scot Jamie Harron spent three months in prison in 2017 after being accused of public indecency for touching another man's hip at a bar.
The 27-year-old electrician claimed he had simply been trying to avoid spilling his drink when he touched the man.

Read the scathing letter Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent Anthony Albanese

A letter from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has surfaced, sent just days before he launched a scathing public attack on Anthony Albanese, accusing the Australian Prime Minister of having 'abandoned Australia's Jews'. On Tuesday evening, Netanyahu took to social media to denounce Albanese as 'weak' and claimed he had 'betrayed Israel'. He wrote: 'History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews.' Following Netenyahu's comments, minister for home affairs Tony Burke snapped back. 'Strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many people you can leave hungry. Strength is much better measured by what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has done, which is when there's a decision we know Israel won't like he goes straight to Benjamin Netanyahu.' The attack follows Israel's decision to revoke the visas of Australian diplomats who engage with the Palestinian Authority. This was in retaliation for Australia's announcement to recognise Palestine as a state and its cancellation of visas for several far-right Israeli politicians, including Simcha Rothman and Ayelet Shaked. Before the public attack on Australia's prime minister, Netanyahu had sent Albanese a strongly worded letter on August 17, condemning him for failing to address what he described as an 'epidemic' of antisemitism that had 'intensified' under his leadership. 'Prime Minister, antisemitism is a cancer. It spreads when leaders stay silent. It retreats when leaders act. I call upon you to replace weakness with action, appeasement with resolve, and to do so by a clear date: the Jewish New Year, September 23, 2025,' Mr Netanyahu writes in the letter. The Israeli PM claimed Australia's announcement to support a move to recognise a state of Palestine 'rewards Hamas terror, hardens Hamas' s refusal to free the hostages', 'emboldens those who menace Australian Jews and encourages the Jew-hatred now stalking your streets.' 'It is not diplomacy, it is appeasement,' Netanyahu wrote in the letter. 'Following Hamas's savage attack on the people of Israel on October 7, 2023, pro-Hamas extremists and left-wing radicals began a campaign of intimidation, vandalism and violence against Jews across the free world,' Mr Netanyahu wrote to Mr Albanese. 'In Australia, that campaign has intensified under your watch.' He went on to highlight several acts of anti-semitism against the Jewish community in Australia. 'In June, vandals defaced a historic Melbourne synagogue with graffiti praising Iran and calling to 'Free Palestine',' Mr Netanyahu wrote. 'In July, arsonists targeted the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation during Shabbat dinner, forcing twenty worshippers to flee for their lives. 'That same night, masked rioters stormed an Israeli-owned restaurant in central Melbourne, destroying property, hurling furniture and shouting 'Death to the IDF'. These are not isolated incidents. This is an epidemic.' For examples of how Albanese could support Israel, Netanyahu pointed to the US, and went on to praise president Donald Trump. 'As President Trump has shown, antisemitism can and must be confronted,' he states. 'The President is protecting the civil rights of American Jews, enforcing the law, protecting public order and prosecuting antisemitic crimes. He has also deported Hamas sympathizers and revoked the visas of foreign students who incite violence against Jews.' At the end of the tense letter, Netanyahu told Albanese: 'History will not forgive hesitation. It will honour action.' On Monday, it emerged that Australia had revoked the visa of far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman over some of his provocative comments including describing children in Gaza as enemies. Australia has also denied entry to former Israeli minister Ayelet Shaked, based on anti-Palestinian comments, and Israeli advocate Hillel Fuld. In response, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said the visas of Australia's representatives to the Palestinian Authority had been revoked. He also instructed the Israel Embassy in Canberra to carefully examine any official Australian visa application for entry into Israel. The diplomatic tit-for-tat prompted Foreign Minister Penny Wong to accuse Benjamin Netanyahu of 'isolating Israel'.

Marjorie Taylor Greene reveals how her friendship ended with Laura Loomer

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has explained why she's no longer friends with Laura Loomer, a MAGA activist, conspiracy theorist and self-described 'proud Islamophobe.' Greene, a right-wing lawmaker from Georgia, opened up about her long-standing rivalry with Loomer on Tuesday during an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show. Megyn Kelly, a conservative podcaster and former Fox News host, brought up their feud and asked Greene if she fell out with Loomer over their differing opinions on Israel. Loomer is a strong supporter of Israel, while Greene has said the U.S. should not intervene in foreign wars and has even called Israel's war in Gaza a 'genocide.' However, Greene told Kelly that wasn't the reason their friendship ended. Greene said she was once friends with Loomer and even endorsed her failed 2020 Congressional bid in Florida. Their relationship took a turn when Loomer tried — and failed — to unseat GOP Representative Daniel Webster in a different Florida district in 2022, Greene explained. 'The second time she decided to run, she jumped a district and wanted to run against Daniel Webster, who is actually a conservative Republican,' Greene said. 'And I said, 'Hey, Laura, I don't think you should run against Daniel Webster. I don't think you can beat him. Why don't you jump to another district where there's an open seat, and you'll have a much better shot.'' 'Well, she refused,' Greene added. 'She said no, she would not listen to anybody…So I said, 'I can't get involved. I'm not going to endorse against him. I'm going to stay out.' Well, she was furious at me, and then everything kind of plummeted from there.' Greene went on to accuse Loomer of attacking Trump's 'most loyal' allies 'all the time.' 'She attacks some of the most loyal people to the president, people that are unapologetically America first…Those of us that fight the hardest, for some reason, she attacks us the most,' Greene said. The Independent has contacted Loomer for comment. Loomer and Greene often trade insults online. Earlier this month, Loomer accused Greene of corruption and claimed the lawmaker is using campaign funds to keep her daughter, who lives in Texas, on the payroll. Greene did not respond to The Independent's request for comment last week. In September, Greene accused the MAGA activist of making an 'extremely racist' post after Loomer said that 'the White House will smell like curry and White House speeches will be facilitated via a call center' if former Vice President Kamala Harris won the 2024 election. 'It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. This does not represent President Trump. This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever,' Greene said of Loomer's post. Greene also told Kelly about her feud with Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett, claiming the Texas lawmaker 'treats her staff like they are just beneath her.' Greene also recounted her public sparring with Crockett last year. During a House Oversight Committee meeting in May 2024, Greene told Crockett, 'I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you're reading.' Crockett later fired back, saying Greene has a 'bleach blonde bad built butch body.' Greene told Kelly she found the remark 'hilarious.' recently claimed she is one of the Democratic Party's 'low IQ' members.
