Imee Marcos: Some senators asked me to vie for Senate presidency
Reelected Senator Imee Marcos said Friday some of her colleagues in the upcoming 20th Congress have asked her to vie for the Senate presidency.
Marcos disclosed this in a statement, but she did not give details about her response to the "proposal."
"Some senators have approached me with the proposal to be their candidate for Senate President," she said.
"Whoever will be elected by our peers, whether it is me or not, there are certain congressional reforms that need to be undertaken," she added.
Marcos emphasized in her statement the need to reform the budgetary process, particularly the traditions during the bicameral conference committee on the annual national spending plan bill.
"The most important is reform in the budgetary process. Tigilan na ang mahiwagang bicam (Stop the 'magical' bicam sessions). The right priorities in spending, considering our recurring fiscal deficits and huge indebtedness, must be legislated: food security and support to our farmers and fishermen; education; health and truly necessary social services," she said.
She likewise objected to the statement of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) that her brother, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., will sit in the budgetary process as an observer.
"Parenthetically, once the OP (Office of the President) has submitted the NEP (National Expenditure Program) to Congress, the power of the purse must be respected. The DBM statement that the president will involve himself in the budgetary process after the NEP is submitted is infirm and unconstitutional," she said.
GMA News Online has reached out to Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin regarding Senator Marcos' statement, but he has yet to respond as of posting time.
In the same statement, Imee raised the need for electoral reforms, including political party reforms which she said have become "mere tools for personal ambition rather than the public interest."
"Above all, the Senate as the guardian of national interest must always be upheld; its independence non-negotiable," she said.
Apart from Imee, other senators of the 20th Congress who are reportedly vying for the chamber's top post were current Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero and Senator-elect Vicente "Tito" Sotto III.
Reelected Senator Bong Go earlier confirmed that Sotto and Escudero have discussed with him separately the Senate presidency in the 20th Congress.
Last week, reelected Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson said at least 13 senators of the 20th Congress have expressed preference for a Senate president who is "independent, transparent, and competent." — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Senate OKs anti-POGO bill on second reading
The Senate approved on second reading a bill banning Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) in the country. Senate Bill 2868 or the Anti-POGO Bill, declared offshore gaming operations in the Philippines as unlawful. 'I look forward na ma adopt na ito ng Senado yung batas po at yung committee report, I really felt na ito ay one-two power punch against POGO,' said Senator Risa Hontiveros, chair of the Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality. Among the amendments in the measure are the Bureau of Immigration's mandate to deport foreign nationals directly back to their country. Meanwhile, maximum penalties were imposed on government officials found engaging in POGO-related activities. In 2024, authorities discovered some POGO hubs engaging in human trafficking and physical and sexual abuse. This includes POGO hubs in Bambam, Tarlac and Porac, Pampanga. This led to the arrest of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, also identified as Guo Hua Ping, Guo, for alleged involvement in the illegal activities of a POGO hub in her town. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

Sara Duterte questions impeachment case crossing over to 20th Congress
'Kinu-question din namin 'yan, 'yung pag-crossover from the 19th to the 20th Congress,' Duterte said in an interview in The Hague, Netherlands on June 3, Tuesday. Vice President Sara Duterte is questioning whether the articles of impeachment filed against her in the Senate in the 19th Congress may be taken up by the chamber sitting as an impeachment court in the 20th Congress. 'Kinu-question din namin 'yan, 'yung pag-crossover from the 19th to the 20th Congress,' Duterte said in an interview in The Hague, Netherlands on June 3, Tuesday. (We're also questioning the crossover of the trial from the 19th to 20th Congress.) She, however, refrained from expounding the matter, saying that she would leave it up to her legal team. ''Yung lawyers ko na lang magsalita kasi papagalitan na naman ako nila. Papagalitan na naman ako no'n, 'yung mga lawyers ko. So tanong natin 'yung lawyers,' she added. (I'll let my lawyers talk about that. They will scold me again if I answer, so let's ask my lawyers.) On Wednesday, Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa said that he was behind a resolution on the dismissal of the impeachment case against Sara Duterte. Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero last week announced that the reading of the impeachment raps would be postponed from June 2 to June 11. The 19th Congress will adjourn sine die on June 14. The Vice President went to The Hague to visit her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in the Scheveningen Prison for charges of crimes against humanity for the extrajudicial killings during his administration's war on drugs. While in the Netherlands, Sara Duterte admitted that she was not able to monitor the developments regarding the impeachment proceedings in the Philippines due to the time difference. 'Pero ang pagkakaintindi ko ay maraming procedural lapses na nangyayari na labag sa Constitution,' she added. (But as far as I understand, there are many procedural lapses happening that are against the Constitution.) Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint against her. She was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Marcos hopes Singapore can aid in diversifying PH energy sector
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed hope that Singapore could help the Philippines in ''diversifying'' its energy sector. During a joint press statement with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Marcos said the Philippines seeks further achievements in its renewable energy sector. ''Acknowledging how Singapore will remain a major partner in our aspiration to diversify our energy sources, I encouraged Singapore to increase its investments in the renewable energy sector as part of our forward-looking bilateral agenda,'' he said. Marcos emphasized that Singapore remains one of the Philippines' most important investors. ''I expressed my hope that we will remain an important destination for these investments, and that the collaboration of our private sectors, both in the Philippines and in the region, will further deepen and adapt to global developments,'' he said. When it comes to climate change mitigation, the two nations reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on a carbon credits mechanism in line with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement through commencing negotiations on an implementing arrangement. ''It is hoped that the early completion of the negotiations will result in climate-friendly actions and increased investments in related sectors, thereby creating meaningful and sustainable livelihood and business opportunities for both Filipinos and Singaporeans alike, while producing good sustainability outcomes for our local communities,'' Marcos said. In the health sector, Marcos is also hoping to have a health cooperation agreement with Singapore, aside from the facilitation of training and exchanges between their health experts. Meanwhile, through the Digital Leadership Program between the Civil Service Commission and the National University of Singapore, Marcos is optimistic in accelerating digital leadership and transformation across the civil service. Wong is in the Philippines for an official visit until tomorrow, June 5. — BM, GMA Integrated News
