Delhi Riots: Delhi HC reserves order on Tasleem Ahmed's bail plea
His bail plea was opposed by the Delhi Police, contending that the delay could not be the sole ground for bail.
The division bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar reserved the order after hearing the arguments by both sides.
Advocate Mehmood Pracha appeared for petitioner Tasleem Ahmed, whose bail plea was dismissed by the trial court. The counsel submitted that the petitioner has been in custody for the last five years, and the trial has not yet commenced. Advocate Parcha also submitted that no adjournment was ever sought by the petitioner before the High Court.
He also submitted that despite orders from the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, the matter is not being heard on a day-to-day basis. It was further argued that the arguments on the charge on behalf of the petitioner have been completed.
On the other hand, the Delhi Police opposed the bail plea, submitting that delay cannot be the sole ground for granting bail in UAPA cases. He referred to several judgments passed by the courts. Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad appeared on behalf of the Delhi Police. He argued that there is an embargo on Section 43(D), which applies to the consideration of bail in UAPA cases. This proviso provides that bail cannot be granted without testing the material filed by the investigation agency against the accused.
During the arguments, SPP also referred to the notice on conspiracy to riot. He submitted that a conspiracy was hatched, and consequently, 53 people died.
On March 25, the High Court had asked the Delhi Police to file a note on the role of the accused, Tasleem Ahmed.
Earlier, Advocate Mehmood Pracha had submitted that Tasleem Ahmed's case was different from that of the other co-accused persons.
On February 22, 2024, the trial court dismissed his bail plea. Earlier, he had sought regular bail on the grounds of parity with three co-accused, namely Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, and Asif Iqbal Tanha, in relation to a larger conspiracy surrounding the 2020 Delhi Riots. Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, and Asif Iqbal Tanha were granted regular bail by the Delhi High Court on June 15, 2021, after their appeals against the trial court order were allowed.
Special Judge Sameer Bajpai stated that the earlier bail application of accused Tasleem Ahmed was rejected by the predecessor court on March 16, 2022, in which the court held the allegations against the accused to be prima facie true. Hence, the embargo created by Section 43D of UA(P)A applies to the grant of bail to the accused, as well as the embargo contained in Section 437 Cr.P.C., the court held. (ANI)

Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai hailed Chinar Corps for its role in Monday's encounter near Srinagar, calling them valiant warriors of the Indian Army. (ANI File) In a post on X, Lt Gen Ghai highlighted the harsh terrain and operational challenges security forces face during anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. 'Sometimes, when you despair that results are not forthcoming, you only need to spare a thought for the tough terrain and conditions that affect such operations,' he wrote. He went on to commend the Chinar Corps' commitment to national security, saying, 'Never forget that the Chinar Corps will invariably send terrorists to meet their maker. Salute to the valiant warriors of this exalted outfit of the Indian Army.' The remarks came soon after the confirmation that three terrorists were killed in a joint operation, codenamed Operation Mahadev, launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Lidwas region near Dara, close to Dachigam National Park. Suleiman Shah, also known as Hashim Moosa, was the mastermind behind the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Suleiman Shah had previously served in the Pakistan Army, reported NDTV. He was affiliated with the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). 'It is a prolonged operation and is still continuing in which J&K police, paramilitary and army have an exchange of fire (with terrorists) in higher reaches. As per the interior reports, three bodies are being observed and seems to be neutralised. It is an ongoing operation and I would not like to divulge much at this moment. We will share details with you at an opportune time. It will take us some time for identification and all that. The (security) parties are still inside,' IGP Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Birdi told the media.

Misogynistic remark row: NDA MP protests against Islamic cleric's comment on Dimple Yadav; slams SP chief Akhliesh Yadav's silence
NDA MP protests against Islamic cleric's comment on Dimple Yadav (Picture credit: X/@KesineniS) NEW DELHI: NDA MPs staged a protest on Parliament premises on Monday against an Islamic cleric's alleged misogynistic comment targeting Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav , calling it 'shameful, offensive and unacceptable'. The protest, led by women MPs of the ruling alliance near Makar Dwar, came after Maulana Sajid Rashid reportedly criticised Yadav for wearing a sari during a meeting at a mosque and compared her with fellow SP MP Iqra Hasan, who had her head covered. Chanting slogans like 'Nari shakti ka apman, nahin sahega Hindustan', BJP MPs questioned the Opposition's silence on the issue, particularly targeting SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leaders. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj questioned if 'appeasement politics' had become more important for the SP than a woman's dignity. 'It is deeply shameful that such an offensive and inappropriate comment has been made against a sitting MP, Dimple Yadav ji, and yet her husband Akhilesh Yadav and his entire party, as well as the entire Opposition, remain silent,' she said, as quoted by news agency PTI. — ANI (@ANI) JD(U) MP Lovely Anand said Akhilesh Yadav should stand by his wife. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Retirees Can Potentially Minimize RMD Taxes SmartAsset Learn More Undo 'Then, other women will also have confidence,' she said, demanding an apology from the cleric. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also hit out at the INDI alliance. 'It is a matter of great sadness that Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are silent on the indecent remarks made by the Maulana against Dimple Yadav due to their vote-bank compulsions,' he said, as quoted by news agency ANI. 'If you cannot stand up for the honour of your wife, then how can you protect the daughters of Uttar Pradesh?' Meanwhile, Dimple Yadav responded by saying the outrage would have been more meaningful had the ruling alliance shown similar concern during the Manipur violence . 'It's good that action is being taken now... But it would have been better if similar protests and support had been visible when horrifying incidents like the one in Manipur came to light through footage on social media,' she told reporters at Parliament. SP MP Iqra Hasan also condemned the remarks and called for a social boycott of the Maulana. 'They are not any religious leaders or 'Thekedar' of the religion... It is a very shameful statement,' she told ANI. Maulana Rashid, defending himself, said he was merely objecting to Yadav's posture inside a mosque, saying it violated Islamic norms. However, an FIR was registered against him in Lucknow late Sunday for objectionable and inflammatory comments, East Zone DCP Shashank Singh said.

Nayara Energy moves Delhi HC against Microsoft for suspending key services
Indian oil refining and marketing company, Nayara Energy, which is backed by Russian investment, has taken legal action against Microsoft. The company said the US-based tech firm had abruptly and unilaterally suspended essential services without any prior warning. "Microsoft is currently restricting Nayara Energy's access to its own data, proprietary tools, and products --despite these being acquired under fully paid-up licences," stated Nayara. Petition filed in Delhi HC The company has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. It is seeking an interim injunction and immediate restoration of services to protect its rights and ensure continued access to important digital systems. According to Nayara, Microsoft did not discuss or notify the company before cutting off services. "This action has been taken unilaterally, without prior notice, consultation or recourse, and under the guise of compliance," the statement added. Sanctions lead to disruptions Nayara, which purchases large volumes of Russian oil, was recently sanctioned by the European Union. The company is mostly owned by Russian entities, including oil giant Rosneft. Although the sanctions are from the EU, Nayara claims that Microsoft -- a US-based firm -- is not legally required to enforce them under American or Indian law. Despite this, sources said Microsoft suspended Nayara's services last Tuesday. Since then, email accounts and Teams access for Nayara employees have been unavailable. Microsoft has not commented on the matter. Following the sanctions, at least two ships avoided loading refined products from Nayara's Vadinar facility. One crude tanker carrying Russian Urals was also diverted. In addition, Nayara's CEO resigned and was replaced by Sergey Denisov. Key role in India's energy sector Nayara Energy highlighted its important role in India's fuel economy. The company contributes around 8 per cent of the country's refining capacity and 7 per cent of its petrol pump network. It is also developing about 8 per cent of India's polypropylene capacity. While facing these challenges, Nayara said it remains committed to maintaining uninterrupted supply across India. Focus on domestic market and growth Operating under the motto 'In India, for India', Nayara mainly serves the domestic market through retail outlets, institutional sales, and partnerships with other oil marketing companies. The company is also investing in petrochemicals and clean energy, generating thousands of jobs. Nayara added that it complies fully with Indian regulations and continues to work closely with Indian authorities to maintain transparency and accountability.
