Soccer fans tear into 'soft' USMNT star Christian Pulisic as he defends controversial decision

Daily Mail3 days ago
Stateside soccer fans have turned on USMNT hero Christian Pulisic for his 'soft' attitude after the AC Milan star hit back at his critics.
The midfielder sparked backlash earlier this year when he ruled himself out of Mauricio Pochettino 's USMNT squad for this summer's Gold Cup action after a long campaign in Italy with Milan.
And, in a new nine-episode documentary following his career on Paramount+, the former Chelsea winger defended his decision - much to the ire of American soccer fans.
'It is a lot. it's hard to keep up with playing every single game,' Pulisic said. 'I mean, you see a ton of injuries. But this is how it is. This is the business. People want to see us play.
'I think it's just a decision I had to come to to do the best thing for myself and to look out for myself for once. But I think everyone has had their opinion on me and, in my opinion, just disrespected me in a lot of ways and just completely forgotten about what I've done for this national team for 10 years. It sucks.'
However, after the snippet of the documentary was shared to social media, American soccer fans ripped into the 26-year-old for his 'soft' stance as they accused him of painting himself as the victim.
I can't anymore. The whining, the entitlement, the poor-me theatrics. Yes of course you live under a microscope. You're the country's best player.
And compared to every other ⚽️ country, you have it so easy. https://t.co/6KL4F4MCYR

'Interesting psychological insight into the victim complex that society and education has created in the last decade,' one fan wrote on social media.
'Pulisic is the least charismatic athlete I think l've ever seen. How anyone thought it was a good idea to film a documentary for a midtable player in Italy I'll never know,' another slammed in response to the clip on X.
'Every time Pulisic talks he makes it worse, the entitlement and whininess makes him very unlikable,' a third fan critiqued. 'I hope he turns this around, ultimately the 2026 World Cup with the USMNT will be his opportunity on the field, even so... the damage has been done off the field.'
'I can't anymore. The whining, the entitlement, the poor-me theatrics,' one frustrated soccer supporter fumed. 'Yes of course you live under a microscope. You're the country's best player. And compared to every other (soccer) country, you have it so easy.'
Others believed that hitting back at the critics of his decision was the worst possible move Pulisic could have made.
'this is the worst thing he could've done,' one claimed. 'this doc doing nothing but showing how entitled he is and how him and everyone around him. makes him a victim.'
'Christian Pulisic is by far & away the most insufferable athlete l've ever been forced to support. This (clown) continues to make himself look worse in the media by playing the victim at every possible juncture,' another agreed. 'There's always an excuse for this guy under-delivering + failing.'
'The USMNT captain shouldn't be soft. The team is cooked as long as their captain acts like this,' a third warned just one year our from the World Cup.
Fans ripped into the 26-year-old after he tried to defend his decision in a new documentary
'@pulisic bad looks all around. People used to respect you,' another claimed, while one chimed in: 'Clown show. Nobody feels bad for you Christian.'
The criticism of Pulisic hasn't been limited to America's fanbase with former USMNT stars and legends also taking issue with his decision to sit out of the Gold Cup.
Ahead of the tournament, US soccer icon Landon Donovan, without naming names, took a jab at Pulisic and other USMNT key figures who excused themselves from Pochettino's roster.
'I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off,' the former Everton forward said.
Another player turned pundit, Alexi Lalas, also piled on Pulisic on the 'Call It What You Want' podcast on the Golazo Network
'You can talk about my performances, whatever you want, but to question my commitment, especially towards the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line,' Lalas said.
Yet, Pulisic took a swipe at the legends during his documentary, branding their comments a 'cop-out'.
'I'd say the most annoying thing, and for me, the biggest cop-out of all time, is when, especially, you know, all pundits want to say: 'They didn't want it. They didn't have the heart, you know, back in our day, we would fight and we would die on that field,'' Pulisic said in the eighth episode of the docuseries, which was filmed earlier this summer.
His international teammate Tim Weah backed Pulisic as he hit out at the 'evil' analysts.
'Those guys are chasing checks, and for me, I just feel like they're really evil, honestly, because they've been players, and they know what it's like when you're getting bashed,' Weah said.
'Those are the same guys that will turn around and shake your hand and try to be friendly with you.'
Pochettino and the USMNT are entering a critical year as they gear up for the World Cup on home soil next year.

College football star arrested days before start of the season as embarrassed coach admits: 'We're thankful nobody was hurt'

Clemson tight end Ian Schieffelin was arrested over the weekend on a suspicion of driving under the influence, days before the start of the Tigers ' season. Details of Schieffelin's arrest were not immediately available, nor how long he will be removed from competition. Schieffelin is in his first season on the Tiger football team after using his final year of collegiate eligibility to try his hand at the gridiron after four seasons with Clemson's men's basketball team. Schieffelin switched teams, playing for Clemson on the hardwood as recently as this year's NCAA Tournament. Now, his new head coach, Dabo Swinney, has released a statement on the arrest. 'We are aware of Ian Schieffelin's arrest on suspicion of DUI,' Swinney said. 'Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence.' 'We're obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.' Swinney first made his interest in adding Schieffelin to the football roster last fall, with a spot opening up on this year's roster. Originally, Schieffelin entered the transfer portal, to find another school for his fifth year for basketball alone. He then had a change of heart and accepted Swinney's offer. Swinney wanted Schieffelin on his roster due to a lack of depth at tight end, leaving a void for however long he will be out of action. The Tigers now only have three tight ends with a collegiate catch on their roster. It is unclear the last time Schieffelin played organized football, as he focused on basketball in high school and college. Even with Schieffelin's absence, Clemson is expected to be a national-title contender and win the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Bama Rush girls celebrate in the streets as they learn which sororities they got accepted into

The newest members of the University of Alabama 's sororities have officially been chosen, marking the end of this year's Bama Rush. Back in 2021, a series of women who were trying to join the University of Alabama's Panhellenic community documented their road to being accepted into one of the 18 different sororities at the school, and uploaded it all to TikTok under the hashtag #BamaRush. Their videos quickly exploded, and many people on the web became enthralled with watching the lengthy process play out. Since then, every time August rolls around, #BamaRush goes viral once again, as a whole new set of freshmen hopefuls at the University of Alabama and other Southern schools put their best foot forward to vie for the chance to get accepted into the sororities on campus. This year was no different... and after nine days of battling it out to see who would earn a spot in the coveted sororities, the recruitment period concluded on Sunday, August 17. Known as Bid Day, about 2,400 women finally found out which sorority they'd be joining - if any - during a ceremony at UA's Bryant-Denny Stadium. It's tradition for the chosen women to run through the campus to Sorority Row, and photos obtained by the Daily Mail showed the newest recruits excitedly bolting to their new homes. The women were seen celebrating all over the campus, hugging, and cheering moments after learning their fates. It's tradition for the chosen women to run through the campus to Sorority Row It's certainly an exciting time for the students as it marks the beginning of a new era for them. One day earlier, during the final recruitment day, known as Preference, there was a terrifying moment when one of the women needed medical assistance. Dramatic images showed the student, who looked distressed, being taken into an ambulance via stretcher surrounded by EMTs. It's unclear what caused the incident, but it was certainly a possibility that she had gotten overheated. Temperature soared to the mid-90s this weekend, with a heat advisory in affect in Alabama. Trisha Addicks, the first official nation-wide recruitment coach, recently lifted a lid on the lengthy Bama Rush process exclusively with the Daily Mail. For a fee of $4,500, potential new members (known as PNMs) can receive comprehensive coaching, conversation prep, and styling from Addicks. She also offers advice on securing recommendations, networking, and even fine-tuning clients' social media presence. Some moms try to hire Addicks, a University of Georgia alumna based in Atlanta, as early as junior year of high school, before they even know where their daughter will be attending for school. And with the boom of 'RushTok' Addicks has seen in surge in clients from other corners of the country. 'They are coming in droves from the North, Midwest and West because they want a part of that,' she said. She noted that recruitment can be 'isolating and hard,' especially when PNMs see their friends getting bids to the houses they want and were dropped from. And, in the cases where mothers are heavily involved in the process, some parents will 'spiral' when their daughters' options dwindle during rush, causing panic. 'I had a woman reach out to me this week, and she was very distraught because her daughter had been dropped from all but one,' Addicks revealed. It's a longstanding tradition for them to run through the campus after learning their fates While she can't know for sure what went wrong, she would have to guess it's because the client doesn't have 'much of a social media presence.' PNMs need to be Google-able, she said, though they shouldn't be posting thirst traps aplenty, she noted. 'It may not hurt you at some sororities, but why risk it?' she said. 'Because it's not going to help.' Still, not everyone who goes through recruitment will get a bid. 'My phone will ring off the hook next week for people who did not have successful rush,' she admitted.

Dane Myers, Jakob Marsee homer in 9th as Marlins rally past Red Sox to avoid sweep

August 17 - Dane Myers and Jakob Marsee each homered during a three-run ninth inning that allowed the visiting Miami Marlins to avoid a three-game sweep by earning a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Miami trailed 3-2 entering the ninth, but Myers led off the inning with a game-tying home run against Greg Weissert (4-4). Marsee hit a two-run home run against Steven Matz later in the inning that handed the Marlins a two-run lead. Boston had two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Carlos Narvaez flied out to right against Anthony Bender to end the game. Tyler Phillips (2-1) collected the win for pitching a scoreless eighth. Bender picked up his fourth save. Miami also received a solo home run from Eric Wagaman. Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox, who beat the Marlins 2-1 Friday night and 7-5 Saturday. The victory ended Miami's three-game losing streak. Abreu's home run, his 22nd of the season, came against Miami starter Janson Junk with two outs in the fourth inning. Jarren Duran, who drew a one-out walk, also scored on the homer. Abreu collected two hits and scored twice in the win, but left the game with an apparent leg injury after he scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Boston starter Garrett Crochet held Miami to a run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one. Junk matched his career-high by going seven innings. He allowed three runs on six hits, struck out six and walked one. Abreu's home run handed Boston a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Myers had the ball in his glove, but it popped out and went over the right-field wall and into the Red Sox bullpen. Boston stretched its lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Abraham Toro's sacrifice fly allowed Abreu to score. Xavier Edwards scored on a two-out single by Hicks to make it 3-2 in the eighth. --Field Level Media
