Joe Burrow directs two touchdown drives, Bengals outlast Jayden Daniels' Commanders for 31-17 win

LANDOVER, Md. — In a matchup of LSU Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, Jayden Daniels rushed for a 14-yard touchdown in his lone possession, while Joe Burrow directed two touchdown drives in the Cincinnati Bengals' 31-17 win over the Washington Commanders on Monday night.
Burrow played three possessions, completing 9 of 14 passes for 62 yards. The 2020 Heisman winner found wide receiver Charlie Jones for a 4-yard touchdown reception on his final toss. Running back Chase Brown's 1-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal capped a 58-yard drive on the opening possession at Northwest Stadium.
The Bengals (1-1) planned on using their starters longer in preseason games to hopefully avoid a string of poor regular-season starts. Over two games with Burrow at quarterback, Cincinnati scored touchdowns on four of five possessions.
'Those are just incredibly valuable reps that usually you work out those kinks in the first couple of weeks in the regular season, and we've worked them out the last two weeks,' Burrow said.
Head coach Zac Taylor had his share of nitpicks, as all coaches do, but said he likes 'where this offense and this team is at right now at this point.'
In Daniels' likely only preseason appearance, Washington (0-2) drove 74 yards on four plays to tie the score 7-7. Following runs of 19 and 40 yards by Deebo Samuel and Chris Rodriguez, respectively, Daniels evaded pass rushers and suspect tackling for a 14-yard dash up the middle. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year and 2023 Heisman recipient did not attempt a pass, nor a slide on the touchdown despite running into traffic.
'I'm playing football. I know everybody puts an emphasis on the preseason, but it's a game to me,' Daniels said.
Washington head coach Dan Quinn would prefer his star quarterback to choose caution at times in those spots, 'but it is part of his game. It's what makes him a special player. '
Considering the Commanders played without three offensive line starters, two starting receivers, and tight end Zach Ertz, limiting Daniels' exposure to hits and a slick field courtesy of pre-game rain was probably the proper call. Terry McLaurin, a 2024 second-team All-Pro wide receiver, remains a non-participant amid a contract dispute.
Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt raced for a 27-yard touchdown on Washington's second possession and finished with 46 yards on 11 carries. The seventh-round pick became a training camp sensation for the Commanders, and his scoring scamper won't dampen any enthusiasm. Rodriguez increased his chances for a rotation spot by rushing for a team-high 62 yards on six carries.
Matt Gay's 27-yard field goal accounted for Washington's second-half scoring. Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson drilled a 54-yard field goal with 3:06 remaining.
Bengals roster hopeful Mitchell Tinsley made two impressive touchdown catches — both from quarterback Jake Browning — in a span of 20 seconds late in the first half. Following linebacker Barrett Carter's interception, the wide receiver's leaping, toe-tapping reception with 14 seconds remaining gave Cincinnati a 28-14 halftime lead.
Commanders RB Brian Robinson did not dress for Monday's game, nor was he at Northwest Stadium amid recent reports of Washington seeking to trade the four-year veteran. Quinn said that he and general manager Adam Peters informed Robinson of their decision to sit him out on Sunday afternoon. Quinn declined to share Robinson's reaction. 'News like that is not always that easy,' the coach said.
Robinson rushed for 799 yards and eight touchdowns last season, but the emergence of Croskey-Merritt has the Commanders reconsidering their backfield options.
Bengals: 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy remains sidelined. Head coach Zac Taylor recently said the defensive end was a 'week-ish' away from returning. Cincinnati is thin off the edge with 2024 NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson out while seeking a contract extension.
Commanders: Rookie cornerback Trey Amos was held out of the game after experiencing hamstring tightness following Saturday's practice. The second-round pick warmed up pre-game, but the staff decided to keep him out.
Bengals: Wrap up the preseason Saturday against Indianapolis.
Commanders: Play their exhibition finale Saturday against Baltimore.

How Theo Epstein will help Tiger Woods make huge PGA Tour adjustment

The post How Theo Epstein will help Tiger Woods make huge PGA Tour adjustment appeared first on ClutchPoints. Tiger Woods and Theo Epstein are teaming up to make the sport of golf better and to improve the PGA Tour as best they can. In a recent article by Front Office Sports, it announced that the PGA Tour is trying to create a new Future Competition Committee. The PGA Tour is turning to Tiger Woods to help expand, and former MLB mastermind Theo Epstein is wanted to help join Woods. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp confirmed on Wednesday. Epstein helped end the Curse of the Bambino with the Boston Red Sox by building a World Series-winning team in 2004, and later ended the 100+ year drought for the Chicago Cubs, constructing a World Series-winning team once again in 2016. Epstein is no longer affiliated with an MLB team but is a part-owner of Fenway Sports Group. 'It's one reason why I asked Theo Epstein to participate in this,' Rolapp said. 'He clearly has a track record in other sports including baseball and has wrestled with these same competitive issues, and I think we can learn from his experience.' The committee will include Fenway Sports Group principal John Henry. PGA Tour chairman Joe Gorder will also join the FSG members, as well as six players, including Woods. Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy, and Keith Mitchell are the remaining five. 'It is aimed at a holistic relook of how we compete on the Tour,' Rolapp said. 'That is inclusive of regular season, postseason, and offseason.' Rolapp later commented that the committee has yet to meet for the first time, but is hoping the changes will be implemented 'as soon as we can.' Woods has been trying to improve the sport of golf since he was a teenager. There is nothing he wouldn't do to help the game. Months ago, Woods teamed up with Augusta National to form a new 9-hole course. Woods is also a co-founder with Rory McIlroy for the new TGL, which debuted earlier in 2025. Washington is hoping to take a step forward in the Huskies' second Big Ten season

SEATTLE (AP) — Getting some strong quarterback play out of Demond Williams Jr. would go a long way as Washington looks to improve upon the 6-7 record it posted in its first Big Ten season. Williams, who appeared in 13 games for the Huskies as a freshman and completed over 78% of his passes, drew praise from first-year offensive coordinator Jimmie Dougherty at the beginning of fall practice, not just for his passing abilities, but also his attention to detail. 'Demond only had one interception on over 100 attempts,' Dougherty told reporters in July. 'If we can keep that ratio going, we're going to do a lot of good things in the passing game.' During head coach Jedd Fisch's first year at the helm, Washington did a solid job airing it out even before Williams took over for the final two games of the season. The Huskies ranked 32nd among FBS teams in passing yards per game (261.7), but struggled to consistently establish a run game. Washington running backs combined for 128.8 yards per contest, good for 100th in the country, though Jonah Coleman was a steady contributor by rushing for 1,053 yards and 10 touchdowns. With Williams and Coleman back in Seattle, as well as wide receiver Denzel Boston, who had 63 catches for 834 receiving yards in 2024, the Huskies have a trio of offensive weapons that can stack up with plenty of others in the conference. But, as Fisch noted, competition will be stiff in a conference that produced four College Football Playoff teams a year ago. 'We have a really, really good conference with really, really good coaches,' Fisch said. 'We have really good teams. We have a lot of big-name programs that have spent years and years building up rosters, coaching staffs, facilities, fan base, etc., to be able to prepare themselves to play in the Big Ten.' Shutdown secondary The Huskies will be hard-pressed to do much better in the secondary than they did in 2024, when they ranked second in the country with the fewest passing yards allowed per game. Washington returns cornerback Ephesians Prysock and has added fellow 6-foot-4 cornerback Tacario Davis to the mix. 'Obviously having 6-4 corners is something that not a lot of NFL teams can say,' first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Walters said. 'So, it allows you to be aggressive at the line of scrimmage. And, hopefully, those guys can make it hard for those guys on the outside.' Slotting in While Boston returning for a fourth season bodes well for the Huskies' passing game, questions persist about who will most frequently line up at slot receiver. Following Washington's final open practice of fall camp, Fisch sang the praises of freshman Braiden Vines-Bright, as well as Kevin Green Jr., who missed last year due to injury, and Penn State transfer Omari Evans. Left guard up for grabs From Fisch's perspective, it's an ongoing competition between John Mills and Paki Finau to see who will start at left guard for Washington in 2025. Finau, a redshirt freshman, and Mills, a freshman, don't bring much experience to the table, but both were highly regarded recruits. 'Those two guys continue to battle it out,' Fisch said. '...I would expect alternating in some regard. But, really good job by Mills stepping in as a true freshman, and Paki keeps getting better.' The schedule The Huskies open at home against Colorado State on Aug. 30 and visit rival Washington State on Sept. 20. Washington's first conference game comes at Husky Stadium against Ohio State on Sept. 27. The Huskies' longest road trip is Oct. 4 at Maryland. Washington also travels to Michigan on Oct. 18 and Wisconsin on Nov. 8. The Huskies conclude their season at home against rival Oregon on Nov. 29. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Moore, Baxter & Wisner on Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watchlist

De'Andre Moore, CJ Baxter and Tre Wisner were named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watchlist. The trio could join D'Onta Foreman as the only Longhorns to win the award in history. Award watchlists from around the country continue to roll in, but this one has deep Texas ties. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is a prestigious award given out every year to the best offensive player in the country with Texas ties. The name sake is obviously legendary Texas RB and Heisman winner, Earl Campbell. A trio of Longhorns made their way onto the watchlist this year. DeAndre Moore, CJ Baxter and Quintrevion Wisner made the list and hope to join D'Onta Foreman as Longhorns to win the award. Ashton Jeanty took home the award last year with his over 2,000 yard campaign for Boise State. As you can imagine, it is filled with some of the best college football players in the country, given the talent level of Texas high school recruiting. Texas will face off against a couple QBs on the watchlist in DJ Lagway, Taylen Green and John Mateer this year. De'Andre Moore might have a better chance to win this than some would think. Ryan Wingo is the clear WR1 on the team, but Moore has the ability to put up incredible numbers and play both in the slot and outside this year. He's been taking a step forward every year and he's set up to have a true breakout campaign this year. The running back duo might just get in each other's way to win this one, but it should benefit the Longhorns in the long run. Quintrevion Wisner will likely lead the way early in the season, as CJ Baxter all the way up to game speed. Once CJ gets back to 100%, which sounds like it'll be soon, this will be a clean split. The numbers might not be insane for either, but as a duo, they can put up some incredible stats. Winning this would be an incredible honor for any of the three Longhorns, because of the tie to a Longhorn legend like Earl Campbell. Also, if they were to win, the hope is they would have a scheduling nightmare on their hands. The award was presented in Tyler, Texas on January 21st, 2026. The national championship is in Miami, Florida on January 20th, 2026. The hope is De'Andre Moore, CJ Baxter or Quintrevion Wisner have a happy flight back from Miami into Dallas to get their second trophy in as many days.
