Mario Cristobal has hilarious reaction to 5-star OT Jackson Cantwell commitment
In reality, the Oregon Ducks would have rather seen a video of Dan Lanning jumping up and down, celebrating the commitment of 5-star offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell on Tuesday afternoon. However, seeing Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal, the former Ducks' coach, celebrate the news that he was landing the No. 1 ranked player in the 2026 class likely caused a few smiles to crack in Eugene.
Cantwell, a 6-foot-8, 325-pound OT, chose the Hurricanes over Oregon, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday. It was a rollercoaster of a recruitment, where the Ducks, Hurricanes, and Bulldogs all realistically felt like they led at some point in the past couple of months.
In the end, Cantwell called the Hurricanes on Tuesday with the good news. After the announcement, a video started circulating on social media showing Cristobal talking to Cantwell on the phone and celebrating the commitment.
"Let's go!" Cristobal exclaimed with a fist pump.
This is undoubtedly the biggest recruiting win for Cristobal since he's been with the Hurricanes, and arguably the biggest recruiting win of his career, at least since he landed 5-star EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux with the Ducks back in the class of 2019.

There are reports that it was Miami's NIL deal that helped put them over the edge in landing Cantwell. On3 reported on Tuesday that they are giving the 5-star OT in excess of $2.5 million in his first year with the team, and increasing that number throughout his tenure at Miami.

Brumbies on high alert for major Hurricanes threat
While much has been made of the breakdown battle, the ACT Brumbies are on high alert for the threat coming from the Hurricanes back-line in their Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final. The Brumbies are out to make amends at GIO Stadium on Saturday's after the Hurricanes snapped an eight-year losing streak in Canberra in round 11 when they cracked a 35-29 win. That scoreline set up their charge to the play-offs, winning six straight. Hurricanes winger Kini Naholo was pivotal in the match, making 10 tackle-busts en route to two tries, but will miss the final after suffering an ACL injury last month with Fatafehi Fineanganofo taking his place. Brumbies fullback Tom Wright said there was still plenty of strike weapons in the visitors' line-up and they couldn't give them any room to move. Peter Umaga-Jensen and Billy Proctor are two of the form centres of the competition and will keep the Brumbies pairing of Len Ikitau and David Feliuai on their toes. "I saw Umaga-Jensen carve out a pretty decent try on the weekend and Billy Proctor obviously, you don't have to go looking too far at the season that he's had also, so I dare say Len and Dave will have their hands full," Test No.15 Wright said. "The Hurricanes bring in that sort of expansive style of football, they play an exciting game and there's going to be a lot of points scored so we're looking forward to that challenge, but, you know, we didn't get here, by accident either. "With the season our centres have had as well, I know that they're (Hurricanes) going to be looking at that pretty seriously and trying to stop them at the same time, so it's going to be a good battle." A lil' slice and dice through the defence from Peter Umaga-Jensen 😮💨#SuperRugbyPacific #HURvMOA — Super Rugby Pacific (@SuperRugby) May 31, 2025 As well as a dominant home record, the ACT outfit have also enjoyed a favourable finals record against the Hurricanes, eliminating them in 1997, 2022 and 2023. Dependent on the results of the other two finals, as the third-ranked team the Brumbies could still advance to the semi-finals even with a loss. But after suffering a tight loss to the Crusaders in the final round, which cost them a top-two ladder position, Wright said his team wanted to control their own destiny. He didn't feel they were far off their best against the Crusaders, with a slow start proving costly. "For all the good work that we did we made it bloody hard on ourselves so we need to be a bit sharper as very much more of the same challenge will be coming at us this weekend from the Canes - big ball-carrying, physical guys with the footy, they want to impose themselves," Wright said. "We're looking forward to bringing the game to them."

Oregon Ducks add another 5-star visitor to this weekend's list
The Oregon Ducks were kicking off the month of June with a bang, hosting a long list of top-ranked players on official visits starting on Friday. The list just got a bit more star-studded. On Thursday, it was announced that 5-star safety Jett Washington had reshuffled his visit schedule and will now be coming to Eugene this weekend for his OV at Oregon. Washington was originally scheduled to take his OV to Eugene starting next weekend, but he moved things up to join the group starting on Friday. According to 247Sports, Washington is rated as the No. 18 overall player in the class, and the No. 2 safety. Standing at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Washington is a massive defensive back and would offer a lot of length in the secondary that Oregon has been pursuing over the past couple of recruiting cycles. Washington is reportedly very high on what the Ducks can offer. According to On3's Steve Wiltfong, Oregon should be considered one of the favorites to land Washington this cycle. Need a break?
