Netflix star reveals secret health battle which was written into hit show

Daily Mail29-05-2025
A cast member of the popular Netflix show Sirens is opening up about a private health battle they dealt with during a time cameras rolled on the streaming hit.
Laura Weedman, 56, who portrays the role of chef Patrice on the drama, was diagnosed with Bell's palsy last summer.
Speaking with The Huffington Post on Tuesday, the actress detailed her health battle, and how she dealt with it on a professional level.
'The idea of sitting out and waiting for it to get better was just not an option,' Weedman told the outlet.
Weedman said that she opened up to the shows creator Molly Smith Metzler and director Quyen Tran about the medical situation and how they would move forward with it collectively.

The Mayo Clinic describes Bell's palsy as 'a condition that causes sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face' which 'makes half of the face appear to droop.'
According to the clinic, 'Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side is hard to close.'
While it is not immediately clear what causes the confliction, the clinic said, 'experts think it's caused by swelling and irritation of the nerve that controls the muscles on one side of the face.
Weedman, who has been in the business more than 30 years, told the publication she 'wanted to talk to' the creator-showrunner and director about the issue so she 'wouldn't be stressed' during the remainder of a vacation the cast was on in between filming episodes.
Weedman - whose small screen credits include regular roles on Abbott Elementary and Hacks - said she had past had a mild case of the condition when she gave birth to her son, Leo, now 15.
Metzler said that she, cast and crew 'didn't even wanna conceive of the show without' Weedman, who has also made appearances on Arrested Development, Euphoria and Will & Grace.
Metzler added, 'At that point, I had fallen in love with Lauren like everyone else had, I just felt awful that she was going through something like that.
'We didn't even wanna conceive of the show without her in it.'
Weedman praised Metzler's kindness in adapting the script to accommodate her health.
'It was really hard for me to think that I mattered,' said Weedman, whose character was scripted the line, 'Every summer, this happens; the stress of this job, my Bell's palsy is back.'
The cast of the Netflix series, which began streaming May 22, also includes Julianne Moore as Michaela Kell; Kevin Bacon as Peter Kell; Meghann Fahy as Devon DeWitt; Milly Alcock as Simone DeWitt.
Rounding out the cast are Glenn Howerton as Ethan Corbin; Bill Camp as Bruce DeWitt; and Felix Solis as Jose.
The Mayo Clinic said Bell's palsy 'could be caused by a reaction that occurs after a viral infection' and 'can occur at any age.'
The clinic said that symptoms subsiding varies by the patient.
'Symptoms usually start to improve within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months, the clinic said. 'A small number of people continue to have some Bell's palsy symptoms for life. Rarely, Bell's palsy occurs more than once.'

Morning Joe hosts' absence from show allegedly due to Trump merger

Morning Joe stars Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough's absence from their hit show this summer hints at a secret war with MSNBC bosses over Donald Trump and upcoming merger, it is claimed. More than one third of the episodes broadcast since Memorial Day have been missing one of the husband-and-wife hosts. Mediaite writer Colby Hall has multiple theories as to what is going on. He speculated that the power couple's absence may be icy cold revenge for MSNBC taking their show off the air in the wake of a July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Hall said the decision - taken to try and avoid a huge gaffe by the anti-MAGA pair after the president was almost killed - may have 'widened' an existing rift between them and MSNBC bossts. Brezezinski and Scarborough may also be exploiting their power to 'leverage their stature within the network,' Hall believes, while also conceding the three hour daily show is likely tiring. 'But it's hard to ignore the timing,' Hall added 'With MSNBC's realignment on the horizon and talent contracts under review, Joe and Mika's extended absences feel like a flex - a reminder that Morning Joe doesn't work without them,' Hall stated. MSNBC is currently preparing to split from NBCUniversal to become part of an entirely new company, Versant, made up of other Comcast channels. The piece also pointed out pair have been missing many shows despite the pace of political news coming out of Washington, DC . Of the 49 Morning Joe episodes that have aired since May 26, Brzezinski has been away for 26 while Scarborough has been absent for 18. 'Most of their peers, Rachel Maddow aside, still show up five days a week,' Mediaite reported. 'Joe and Mika may be relaxing poolside, and fair enough,' the report concludes. 'But their absence sends a message. The only question now is whether MSNBC is listening - and how they plan to respond.' Hall said the Morning Joe stand-ins have failed to deliver 'fire-and-ice dynamic' that their viewers enjoy. Moreover, 'their absence sends a message,' Hall wrote at a point. 'When stars act like they own the show, it's often because they do - and they know it,' he said. He added how 'it's hard to ignore the timing' of the two's absence given MSNBC currently being in the process of weighing contracts - and their worth - for MSNBC's realignment. Morning Joe was first broadcast in 2007 and quickly became a hit with MSNBC viewers. Brzezinski, a liberal, and conservative Scarborough became vocally anti-Trump during the president's first term in office.

Legendary 70s actress looks unrecognisable 47 years after playing iconic role – can you guess who?

AN iconic 70s actress has been spotted looking completely unrecognisable, 47 years after playing a celebrated role that has stood the test of time. The star, 74, was pictured in New York yesterday running errands while dressed in a pink polo shirt and white shorts, which could be considered an ode to her legendary character. 5 5 5 She got her big break in Hollywood back in 1978 in a musical romantic comedy film which ended up becoming the highest grossing musical film at the time. Four years later, she reprised her role for the stand-alone sequel and was the only character to return from the first film. That's right, it's Grease icon Didi Conn! She played Frenchy Facciano as part of the Pink Ladies in the movie and it's sequel. The film's soundtrack album ended 1978 as the second-best-selling album of the year in the United States, only behind 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. It was nominated for several accolades including a nomination for Best Original Song at the Oscars and five nominations at the Golden Globe Awards. Not only that, but in 2020, Grease was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Didi previously spoke exclusively to The Sun about her experience of shooting the film and shared some behind the scenes insights. In one memorable scene of the movie, there's a dance contest where the cast go wild, dancing the Hand Jive and doing some rather dirty dancing. While it looked like it would have been fun to film, Didi revealed it was anything but fun. She expressed: 'That actually took a whole week of shooting. And what was really tough about it was that it was the height of summer - my birthday was that week, and the cake they got for me totally melted. 'We were in a real high school in downtown Los Angeles, with no air conditioning, and we had to keep the windows closed because right next door was a pork plant, so you can imagine the smell!' But it was Summer Nights, the opening number of Grease, that Didi remembered most fondly. She explained: 'I think that's where we all bonded, and it was so much fun to sing that song and jump all around the table. 'We'd been rehearsing it for weeks beforehand, so the energy was so high when we performed it for real.' Grease stars remembered IT has been over 45 years since the release of hit musical film Grease, which began its decades-long tenure of dazzling fans in 1978. Sadly, including Susan Buckner, five of the much-loved cast have passed away. On August 8, 2022 it was announced that Olivia Newton-John had passed away aged 73, following a 30 year battle with breast cancer. After falling ill with pneumonia, Jeff Conaway - Danny's best pal Kenickie in the movie - sadly passed away in 2011. The same year, Annette Charles, who played Cha Cha, lost her battle with cancer. In 1993, Dennis C. Stewart, who played rebel Leo, was diagnosed with HIV and passed away from AIDS in 1994. After Grease, Didi went on to star in comedy film Almost Summer, fantasy adventure film Thomas and the Magic Railroad and biographical film Frida, based on the life of Frida Kahlo. In 2019, she flew across the pond to make her debut on British tv screens on the eleventh series of Dancing on Ice. She was partnered with professional Łukasz Różycki and at the age of 67, was the oldest person to ever compete on the show. However, she was eliminated in the fourth week after the judges decided to save Saara Aalto and Hamish Gaman after following the skate-off. 5

Ex-ESPN host Trey Wingo rips into NFL quarterback Jayden Daniels' mom: 'Needs a hobby'

Ex-ESPN host Trey Wingo had some harsh words for Jayden Daniels' mom on Monday as she was spotted at Commanders training camp. Daniels' mother, Regina Jackson, is the passer's agent and business manager and is known to be protective of the former Heisman Trophy winner, as she previously indicated she didn't want her son to date. And after she briefly joined NFL Network's interview of her son from training camp, Wingo had a strong message for Daniels' mother. 'She needs a hobby,' Wingo wrote on X. Regina, who wore a t-shirt with her son's name on it, said she had not attended every day of training camp as Daniels described their relationship. 'She's always gon' be there to uplift me, but if I'm doing wrong, she gon' let me know,' he said. 'Even though I'm 24 years old, I'm still a grown man, but I still gotta listen to my mom at some point.' . @JayD__5 on how much his mom means to him ❤️ — NFL Network (@nflnetwork) August 2, 2025 Jackson became an NFL-certified agent last year and represents her son. However, she previously ruffled feathers with her comments in the Prime Video documentary 'The Money Game,' when she discussed her fear of women 'hooking' her son. 'Some girl's got a Jayden Daniels wall, and her mom says, 'You'll get him.' Someone's trying to hook him, but thank god he's got a mama like me - because it ain't happening.' She later walked back that stance on 'The Pivot' podcast. 'I'm putting it on record. My son can date, he can live freely, make his own decisions,' she said. 'However, with the relationship we have, he does value my opinion because when my kids were little, I did a lot for them and my kids saw that.' Jackson, though, also added that her son 'doesn't know the business world.' 'He doesn't know the predators or the vultures that could be out there. So he feels very comfortable in knowing that not only am I educated and qualified to do it, I'm also his mom.' Off the field, Jackson is often spotted with her son at public outings, as they attended the ESPYs together last year, and a Fanatics Super Bowl party together in February. She was even seen next to him as he danced at Brandon Aiyuk's wedding in April. Daniels had a stellar debut season last year as he won Offensive Rookie of the Year and led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game. His sophomore season will begin against the Giants on September 7.
