Flights between India and Europe suffer as Middle East tension leads to air space closure
New Delhi: At least 48 flights to and from the Middle East, via or destined for Delhi, have been cancelled because of the Israel-Iran crisis that has led to closure of airspace in the region.
The air restrictions have adversely impacted flight operations between India and Europe.
Airport officials said that it was unclear when operations through the Middle East will resume. Twenty departures and 28 arrivals were cancelled on Monday.

The flights were destined for different cities in Europe and the US. According to Delhi airport officials, among the arrival flights are 17 of Air India, eight of IndiGo Airlines.
Three others were cancelled too. Among the departures, ten are of Air India, seven of Indigo, and three of other airlines.
While sources at Delhi airport said that they are yet to receive more information, Air India said on social media that it will gradually start services. "As airspaces gradually reopen in certain parts of the Middle East, Air India will progressively resume flights to the region starting today, with most operations to and from the Middle East resuming from 25 June.

Flights to and from Europe, previously cancelled, are also being progressively reinstated from today, while services to and from the east coast of the US and Canada will resume at the earliest opportunity.
Some flights may experience delays or cancellations due to consequential impacts and extended re-routings/flight times, but we are committed to minimising disruptions and restoring our schedule integrity. Air India will continue to avoid airspaces assessed as unsafe at any given time. We will keep passengers informed of any updates and sincerely appreciate their understanding. On Monday, among departure and arrival cancellations were flights to and from different cities in Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Switzerland.

Bengaluru: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to begin toll collection on the 70-km Karnataka stretch of the newly opened Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, marking the end of free travel for motorists using the route daily. The expressway — the first in Karnataka — was unofficially opened in Feb, allowing vehicles to travel from Hoskote to Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). According to NHAI, toll rates are being finalised, with car users likely to pay Rs 150 for a one-way trip and Rs 225 for a return journey. There are three interchanges — Malur, Bangarpet, and Bethamangala — with tolls ranging from Rs 55 to Rs 150. Heavy vehicles may be charged up to Rs 520 one-way and Rs 780 for a round trip. "The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has notified tolling for this stretch. Once the commercial operations wing completes the procedural formalities and the district authorities are informed, toll collection will begin," NHAI regional officer Vilas Brahmankar said. NHAI has provided Rs 20 crore to Karnataka to upgrade 18km of connecting village and district roads to boost access to the expressway from Bengaluru-Kolar highway. Once completed, traffic is expected to increase significantly. Motorists accessing the expressway via Hoskote continue to face congestion on Old Madras Road. However, connectivity is set to improve with the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) at Hoskote and a new STRR-Hosur link expected to be operational by Aug. Officials confirmed that two-wheelers, autorickshaws, and tractors are banned on the expressway. Despite this, bikers have been illegally accessing the route, raising safety concerns. There have already been several fatal accidents due to speeding. "The road is designed for a speed of 120 kmph for cars. We've implemented road safety measures and jurisdictional police have stepped up enforcement," said an NHAI official. Chaos erupted at Leh airport as over 100 passengers discovered their baggage had been left behind in Chandigarh, triggering anger, slogans, and calls to local police at Leh. The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 10:20 am on June 24, finally took off at 12.58 pm — after a delay of 2.40 hours. Passengers had earlier received a message from Air India stating that the new departure time would be 12.20 pm. However, the actual takeoff was nearly 40 minutes later than even the revised time. The situation took a turn for the worse upon landing, when passengers waited in vain at the baggage belt. Many discovered that their bags — which included essential items like medicines, children's belongings, jewellery, and even cash — had not arrived.
