BJP's Pradeep Bhandari criticises Congress for not officially apologising for imposing Emergency
New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): As India marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Bharatiya Janata Party is observing the 50 years of the imposition of Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' 2025.
Commenting on the occasion, BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari sharply criticised the Congress party and said, 'Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, and till today the Congress party has not officially apologised for imposing the Emergency in the country.'
He further added that if the Gandhi-Vadra family had even an ounce of constitutional morality, they would have apologised five decades ago.
Bhandari did not forget to take a dig at Rahul Gandhi who often carries a copy of the Constitution, said, 'Those who travel with a copy of the Constitution these days belong to the same family that jailed over one lakh citizens during the Emergency, and snatched away the right to life guaranteed under Article 21'.
He reminded that the Constitution was effectively suspended, democracy dismantled, and the fundamental rights of Indian citizens were stripped, all for the sake of clinging to power.
He recounted the horror during the Emergency and how more than 30 lakh poor were forcefully sterilised, more than 250 journalists were imprisoned, and freedom of expression was crushed.
He also mentioned the controversial MISA Act (The Maintenance of Internal Security Act) under which lakhs of people, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vijay Deshmukh, Jaiprakash Narayan, along with several leaders of the opposition, were put behind bars. He called this act similar to the colonial-era laws used by the British to imprison Indian freedom fighters.
MISA was a controversial act passed in 1971. It gave the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's administration expansive powers, such as indefinite preventive detention of individuals.
The Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, following a recommendation made to the President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, under Article 352 of the Constitution.
It suspended elections, curtailed civil liberties, and granted sweeping powers to the central government, lasting until March 21, 1977. The period is widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democratic history. (ANI)

The BJP, as part of the party's nationwide programme on Wednesday, observed 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas (Murder of Constitution Day) across Tripura, recalling the horror of the Emergency promulgated by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with seminars, discussions, and public awareness series. In the state-level programme at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) organised a mock Parliament debate on Indian democracy among the party's youths. The Chief Minister highlighting the various facets of the 'dark phase of Emergency', said that the Emergency, which lasted for 21 months from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, was imposed under Article 352 of the Constitution, had made the citizens' lives terrible and all kinds of democratic activities were entirely curtailed. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi forced then President (Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed) to declare the Emergency, he said. During the period of Emergency, citizens' basic rights were suspended, media freedom was curbed through heavy censorship, and the independence of the judiciary was severely undermined, he reminded. 'We condemned those days of Congress in the 50th year of the beginning of the Emergency and tried to educate younger generations about those black days,' Saha said. State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee and other leaders also spoke at the event.

Security Forces Foiled Coup Plot Involving Senior Cleric, Says Armenia PM
Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday said security forces had foiled a coup plot involving a senior cleric, amid his escalating standoff with the leadership of Armenia's Apostolic Church. Nikol Pashinyan has been at loggerheads with senior clerics since 2020, when Catholicos Garegin II began calling for his resignation following Armenia's disastrous military defeat to arch-foe Azerbaijan over the then-disputed Karabakh region. "Law enforcement officers have foiled a large-scale and sinister plan by the 'criminal-oligarchic clergy' to destabilise the situation in the Republic of Armenia and seize power," he wrote on his Telegram channel. He shared a statement by Armenia's investigative committee which claimed that Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan had "since November 2024 set himself the goal of changing power by means not permitted by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia." Galstanyan -- the leader of opposition Sacred Struggle movement -- last year accused Pashinyan of ceding territory to Azerbaijan and led mass protests that ultimately failed to topple the prime minister. The investigative committee said that Galstanyan "with the prior consent of several members of the movement, acquired the necessary means and tools to carry out terrorist acts and seize power." "Searches are currently underway at the homes of Archbishop Bagrat and around 30 of his associates," it added. A close associate of the archbishop, MP Garnik Danielyan, told journalists that "these are actions of a dictatorial regime," and called the accusations against the cleric fabricated. The loss of Karabakh after Azerbaijan's lightning offensive in 2023 has divided Armenia, as its neighbour demands sweeping concessions in exchange for lasting peace. Earlier this month, Pashinyan launched an unprecedented challenge to Garegin II, urging believers to remove him from office. "We must not forget those traumatic days when an insecure Prime Minister with contempt threw the Constitution and Constitutional safeguards to the wind and tried to seal the fate of the entire nation and democracy for power", he said. "My humble and heartfelt homage to the millions of our brave countrymen and women who risking their lives and of their families fiercely resisted the brutal dictatorship and made it unendurable", the Governor said.
