ESPN analyst suggests trade where 49ers acquire $13 million pass rusher from Dolphins
The San Francisco 49ers are in a good place to trade back in the 2025 NFL draft. ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell served up a trade idea where the 49ers move back and acquire a player who fills one of their biggest remaining needs.
In his mock draft of trades, Barnwell has the 49ers sending the No. 11 pick in the first round and the No. 113 pick in the fourth round to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 13 pick and defensive end Jaelan Phillips.
This seems like a potential dream scenario for San Francisco. They move back two spots and add a 25-year-old pass rusher with 23 career sacks in four seasons while giving up only a fourth-rounder to do so. This puts them in position to still select a defensive tackle or address another need at No. 13 overall.
There are a couple of major issues with this for San Francisco, however.
Phillips is coming off an ACL tear he suffered in Week 4 of last season. In 2023 he only played eight games because of an Achilles tear. He's also playing on his fifth-year option and would be due a fully-guaranteed $13,251,000 this season before hitting free agency in 2026.
A trade down in the draft makes a lot of sense for San Francisco depending on how the top 10 picks shake out. Taking a flier on Phillips is a significant risk given his injury history and the 49ers would probably be better off trying to acquire him for free as part of their trade down instead of giving up an early Day 3 pick in a year where they need to acquire young, cost-controlled talent for their roster.

The San Francisco 49ers began mandatory minicamp Tuesday, and to no surprise, left tackle superstar Trent Williams was a full participant. Advertisement Some rumors swirled after Williams was absent from the team workouts earlier this offseason, but the veteran lineman attended the last couple days of OTAs to quiet the noise. He is under contract, a proven leader in the locker room, and is reportedly in good health, so there shouldn't be much to worry about. He hardly comes to OTAs anyway, so an appearance - however late - is actually some nice progress. One thing that could worry Niners Nation, however, is Williams' longevity at such a crucial position like his. The two have had tremendous success thus far, but Williams won't be able to protect quarterback Brock Purdy's blindside for his entire career- which after the QB's big-time contract extension, many believe will remain in the Bay Area. Williams, who will turn 37 next month, is entering his 15th NFL season. For the average player, this is multiple lifetimes. Even for a future Hall of Famer like Williams is, 15 years is quite a while. Not to mention that offensive line is among the toughest places to play because of the physical demand... Trent is a veteran's veteran to say the least. Advertisement Still, his play hasn't slowed down, with three First Team All-Pros in the last four years as proof. But Father Time is speeding up. So, what does Williams have to say about this eventual twilight of his career? Not much. 'I just feel like I do myself and my teammates a disservice if I'm looking toward the end,' Williams said, via 'I'm paid. People count on me to be here now. We've got goals and aspirations as a team. I just don't think putting brain power toward that helps us get to where we want to go." For the 49ers, "where they want to go" looks a lot different than where they ended up last season. San Francisco fell to the bottom of the NFC West the season after a Super Bowl appearance. Williams himself only appeared in 10 games, which matches a career-low. Advertisement There are a lot of things to improve on in 2025, so Williams' retirement has been pushed far back in the closet of his mind. 'When [retirement] happens, it happens," he said. "I think, one day, coming in, I should know when it's getting that time, and then, I do the responsible thing and let them know early enough so that they can make the adjustments needed.' That day is unknown at the moment, but what we do know is that Williams is under contract for two more seasons, including this upcoming one. After 2026, he will be going on 39 years old. 40, at least right now, could be within reach. 'I would love to make it into that special group, but if it's not in my cards,' he said. 'I'm going to do everything physically possible. I'm going to stay engaged. Advertisement 'It's one of them things to where I'm going to do everything possible to play as long [as I can], and to put a good product of football out there, and then, when it's not going my way, then I'll know. But I could play until I'm 41. Who knows?" Best news of all for 49ers fans? He's fueled up with motivation. "I'm definitely not going to retire with some left in the tank." Trent Williams wants to go "until the wheels fall off". And there are a lot of miles left in those tires. The San Francisco 49ers reevaluated their needs at wide receiver earlier this offseason and came out with some major takeaways. Namely, they moved to get younger and cheaper at the position, trading former No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Advertisement Certainly a bold move on their part, general manager John Lynch has remained steadfast in his commitment to adapt this group while easing the burden on their cap. That line of decision making raised questions about the team's intentions with their new No. 1 Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco has not been shy about their new strategy, so there has been some sentiment to trading Aiyuk. However, Niners insider Grant Cohn has taken that a step further, urging the team to to work with the Commanders again. This time they would send Aiyuk and return Terry McLaurin in the deal. "McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback. I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington." Advertisement Much of that projection involves Aiyuk's relationship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels who happens to be a very close friend. But a straight-up swap for the two players is not happening. While McLaurin's contract disputes with the team has led to a holdout from mandatory minicamp, trading him away would seem an egregious error for a team on the rise. He consistently posts 1,000 yards and comes off arguably his best campaign yet. Daniels and Aiyuk may have a strong relationship, but sacrificing an arguable top 10 receiver for a player coming off a serious ACL injury makes for an extremely high risk. For the Niners, McLaurin would be great to have in a vacuum. But any trade that happens will still need his extension situation sorted out afterward. The Niners have committed big money to several players this offseason and this would be another. Advertisement McLaurin will likely demand a salary well over $30 million per year and higher than the number Aiyuk sits at now. Pulling off such a trade essentially puts them in the same place financially with a longer commitment to an older receiver. More likely than not, Washington will eventually meet their star at the negotiating table and get a new deal done.
