Texas Rangers promote Alejandro Osuna to replace injured Joc Pederson: Report
Texas Rangers promote Alejandro Osuna to replace injured Joc Pederson: Report (Image Source: Getty Images)
The Texas Rangers had a rough Saturday. Their defense collapsed with one bad inning, the bullpen was unable to hold a lead once more and designated hitter Joc Pederson broke a hand after being hit by a pitch.
Pederson has been put on the injured list and will be out for at least six weeks. Although this is a significant loss, it has provided an opportunity for outfielder Alejandro Osuna to debut in the majors.
Alejandro Osuna gets his big chance with Rangers
The Rangers moved swiftly in the wake of Pederson's injury. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the team, late Saturday night, recalled Alejandro Osuna. Osuna started the season in Double-A Frisco but leaped Triple-A after putting up good numbers.
In just seven games at Triple-A Round Rock, he proved himself worthy of this call-up.
Alejandro Osuna's summoning wasn't entirely surprising. Many Rangers fans wished he would be a part of the team soon this summer, perhaps July or August.
But injuries and subpar offense accelerated the timeline. Osuna will now get the opportunity to bring fresh energy to the team. With a slash of .280/.385/.413 and 8 stolen bases in 12 attempts, Alejandro Osuna provides the speed and contact ability that the present team lacks.

Joc Pederson's troubles persist and an opportunity emerges for Alejandro Osuna
Before being injured, Joc Pederson was struggling. He was hitting only .132 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in 144 plate appearances. His problems were already of concern, and his absence may not hurt the lineup as much as anticipated.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy now has a new component to work with in Alejandro Osuna. The young center fielder is viewed more as a "table-setter" rather than a power hitter, something the team is in dire need of.
The Rangers also thought about recalling Blaine Crim, but Osuna's speed and on-base skills made him the better choice.
It's still unclear whether Alejandro Osuna will begin immediately or be gradually incorporated into the rotation. Either way, however, the fans are eager to see what he can do. With the Rangers having fallen behind in the playoff hunt, perhaps this represents the start of a youth movement and perhaps Osuna is just the player to spearhead the effort.

Will Boston Bruins take a chance with ex-Chicago Blackhawks centre Jonathan Toews?
Jonathan Toews (via Getty Images) Veteran Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is considering an NHL return after two years on the sidelines, and the Boston Bruins may be a club that could gain valuable experience from his veteran wisdom. While the Boston Bruins are in transition and in search of adding depth to their leadership corps, acquiring a tested champion in Jonathan Toews is an interesting proposition on the topics of strategy, chemistry, and timing. Jonathan Toews can give Boston Bruins the leadership and experience needed to rebuild their foundation Jonathan Toews has not played an NHL game since April 13, 2023. Now it seems he is ready to return to pro hockey. After taking time off because of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and residual symptoms from long COVID-19, Jonathan Toews has been on a healing journey that involved holistic therapy in India. Now 37 years old, the three-time Stanley Cup winner wants another chance in the NHL. The Boston Bruins now turn to emerging leaders such as David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy to lead the charge. Yet, the roster still does not have the vet stability that a player like Toews might provide—particularly in a middle-six role. His role wouldn't necessarily be goal-oriented but, instead, defensive dependability, playoff acclimation, and guidance for Boston's emerging core. Jonathan Toews Planning NHL Comeback — Maple Leafs a Potential Fit? 👀 There is precedent for such a move. The Carolina Hurricanes still depend upon Jordan Staal in much the same role. Jonathan Toews might assume the role once occupied by Nick Foligno—a steady, defense-savvy, and locker room presence leader. For the Boston Bruins, signing Jonathan Toews on a short-term contract (2 years, $3-4 million AAV) might fill the gap during their present transitional period without using up large cap resources. But the risks are legitimate. Jonathan Toews hasn't appeared in two years, and his previous season was statistically his worst—a mere 31 points in 53 games in 2022–23. There's no certainty he'll rediscover himself, and the Boston Bruins may rather concentrate on bringing back younger players such as Morgan Geekie or pursuing more exciting assets in free agency. The other wrinkle is motivation. Toews might prefer to join a Stanley Cup contender, and the Boston Bruins, for all it history, might not be seen as a Cup favorite in the next couple of seasons. If he's starving for another Cup run, there might be more attractive clubs further down the contention trail. Also read: Jonathan Toews' comeback nears as the Winnipeg Jets lead the race to sign the former Blackhawks captain For the Boston Bruins, acquiring Jonathan Toews would be a risk with reward. His resume is self-explanatory, and as a mentor, he might assist Boston in developing its next generation of leaders. But issues with his conditioning, age, and compatibility with the Bruins' long-term vision could be deal-killers. If Boston does make an offer, it should have expectations in line—leadership in the forefront, performance secondary. And if everything pans out, Toews may be a central figure in bringing back the Bruins' championship bloodlines.

Women's ODI World Cup: Delay In Forming LOC Raises Concern Within BCCI
Last Updated: The Women's ODI World Cup is nearing, but the BCCI hasn't formed the local organizing committee. The tournament runs from Sept 30 to Nov 2 across five venues, including Colombo. The Women's ODI World Cup is imminent, and yet the host Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to establish the local organising committee (LOC) responsible for the smooth operation of the ICC event. The LOC's formation was tabled during the BCCI Apex Council meeting in March, but a decision was deferred. Earlier this month, the ICC announced a partial schedule for the tournament, which will be played across five venues from September 30 to November 2. Colombo will serve as the neutral venue for matches involving Pakistan, as per the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, PCB, and ICC for all ICC events until 2027. The BCCI's senior officials were occupied with the Indian Premier League (IPL) until 3 June, and with the Apex Council expected to meet soon, the LOC may finally be formed. 'There is no deadline per se to form the LOC but it is always better if these things are done well in advance. In countries like England and Australia, you would normally see the LOC in place a year before the event and even the schedule is out well in advance so that the fans can plan," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI. 'As far as the conduct of the tournament goes, the LOC is the main body responsible for sorting out the logistics for the participating teams. Needless to say, it has a massive role to play," the source added. India will host a women's ICC event for the first time since 2016, when it last staged the T20 World Cup alongside the men's tournament. It is worth noting that there was a considerable delay in announcing the schedule for the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup hosted by India, which was finalised at the last minute owing to logistical challenges. The four Indian venues for the Women's ODI World Cup are Bengaluru, Guwahati, Vizag, and Indore. The last 50-over women's World Cup was held in India in 2013. Despite the recent equal pay initiative by the BCCI and the resources at its disposal over the past decade, the women's team is yet to win an ICC trophy. First Published: June 11, 2025, 18:36 IST

‘Was Consulted': Siddaramaiah Changes Stance On RCB Event Week After Bengaluru Stampede
Last Updated: Siddaramaiah said: "Govindraj called up the governor and handed me the phone...I told the governor that since I was attending the Vidhana Soudha event, he should too..." After distancing himself from the June 4 RCB felicitation event for days, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has now changed his stance — he said he was consulted for the Vidhan Soudha function. The Karnataka government went ahead with a felicitation ceremony for IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha on June 4, despite a clear warning from the police about potential security risks. Later that evening, a massive crowd of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for celebration of RCB's maiden trophy win in 18 years, resulting in a stampede that left 11 people dead. Siddaramaiah had earlier said his government the state administration had no role in organising the felicitation event at the stadium and that he was merely invited to the Vidhan Soudha function. 'On the 4th of this month, the KSCA and RCB representatives held a felicitation programme for the players. At around 11:29 am, I was invited. They requested to hold the programme, and I agreed. The Chief Secretary also called me about this, and I said yes." 'The governor also attended the felicitation. The media is played it out in such a way, saying that the governor came of his own volition. That's not correct." 'My political secretary Govindraj called up the governor and handed me the phone, telling that the governor too was coming. I told the governor that since I was attending, he should attend as well. He attended, and the felicitation ended in 20 minutes due to the rains. He left from there, and I headed back to my residence," said the CM. In a letter dated June 4, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) MN Karibasvanna had warned of security concerns and flagged these to the DPAR. In a letter addressed to DPAR head G Satyavathi, Vidhana Soudha security division officials flagged serious concerns about inadequate personnel to manage security arrangements for the high-profile event.
