A day after the body of an Indore man was found in a gorge in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the ongoing search for his missing wife on Tuesday, police said. Raja Raghuvanshi (29) and his wife Sonam were reported missing on May 23, shortly after they checked out from a homestay at Nongriat village. His body was found on Monday, nearly 20 km from where they had last stayed.The couple, who had arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22, rented a scooter before trekking 3,000 steps to visit the living root bridges at Nongriat. They spent the night there and left the homestay the next morning."A team of 17 rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the search and rescue operations at Sohra today," East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told PTI.He added that drones, mountaineers, and special police units are already assisting in the operation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to probe the case. A homicide case has been registered.According to police, Raja's body was identified by his brother, who recognised a tattoo on his right hand that read 'Raja.' Police also recovered a woman's white shirt, a medicine strip, part of an LCD screen, and a smartwatch from the site.Raja's brother, present at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences during the post-mortem, called for a deeper investigation."Since my brother's gold rings, a golden chain and his wallet were missing, we suspect it to be a murder. We urge the authorities to let the Central Bureau of Investigation probe the matter," he said.Extreme weather has hampered the search efforts. 'Heavy rainfall and low visibility had on May 30 stalled the search and rescue operations,' police said. Sohra recorded about 500 mm of rainfall between May 29 and 31, matching the annual rainfall of Mysore, according to a Met department official.Landslides and flash floods in the East Khasi and Jaintia Hills have disrupted traffic and caused six deaths and over 10 injuries.Police began their search on May 24 after the couple's scooter was found abandoned near a café on the Shillong-Sohra road. Local villagers helped with initial search efforts.Earlier this year, a Hungarian tourist, Puskas Zsolt, also went missing after trekking to the same living root bridges. His body was found 12 days later. Police ruled out foul play in that case, stating he died from a fall.Indore MPs Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki reviewed the rescue operations with Meghalaya's Director General of Police I Nongrang and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang. They expressed satisfaction with the efforts being made.

SIT finds liquor scam links to 2024 MP candidates
Tirupati: The ongoing investigation into the sensational liquor scam in the State has taken a significant political turn, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly uncovering fresh links involving candidates who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It was learnt that the SIT has found evidence suggesting that liquor money was allegedly routed to certain MP candidates during the general elections. The funds were reportedly funnelled by the prime accused, Raj Kasireddy, through his driver, and delivered to political candidates via their own drivers or gunmen. In a bid to dig deeper into these alleged connections, a SIT team recently camped in Tirupati for two days. During their stay, officials questioned several individuals and reportedly gathered crucial evidence to support the emerging claims. The probe is now intensifying, focusing on the origin of the funds used for distributing cash and other inducements to voters during the elections. Investigators are said to be tracing both the source and the flow of this money. In the midst of these developments, former Chandragiri MLA and YSR Congress Party's Ongole MP candidate in the last elections, Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, has publicly claimed that attempts werre being made to implicate him in the case. Speaking to the media on Thursday and Friday, Chevireddy maintained his innocence and declared he was ready to cooperate with any investigation. He alleged that the SIT had coerced a former Armed Reserve constable named Giri, who once served as his gunman, into making a false statement against him. 'When I served as government whip, constable Giri worked with me. The SIT summoned him and interrogated him for five days. They pressured him to falsely claim that I moved funds ranging from Rs 250 crore to Rs `500 crore. If they want to arrest me, there's no need for battalions. I'll surrender voluntarily if called. The truth will come out in court,' Chevireddy stated. He further alleged that his associate, Venkateswar Naidu, was also being subjected to harsh interrogation by the SIT in an attempt to extract a statement implicating him. Chevireddy urged investigators to question him directly rather than harassing those associated with him. He also reiterated his long-standing opposition to liquor, citing personal loss due to alcohol. 'I lost both my father and brother to alcohol. I have no association with liquor and I never will,' he asserted. As the SIT's probe deepens, more names from the political and administrative spheres are expected to emerge. With multiple layers being peeled back, the scandal is fast becoming one of the most politically charged controversies in the State's recent history.

Jafrabad murders: 55 days on, charge sheet names 13, blames ‘mosque attack, firing by forces' rumours
1 2 Kolkata: The April 12 violence in Murshidabad which led to the deaths of a septuagenarian and his 44-year-old son in Jafrabad was engineered by a mob after a rumour was spread deliberately that a nearby mosque had been attacked and that security personnel had resorted to firing, says the Bengal police SIT charge sheet filed on Friday. The 983-page charge sheet, filed 55 days after the murders, names 13 persons and mentions that some of the perpetrators had a feud with the victims — Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan — over a piece of land. The 13 accused have been arrested from Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand. All of them are in judicial custody. The Das family has already moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI probe into the incident. ADG (law & order) Jawed Shamim said: "We collected enough evidence against each accused, and we are confident of securing a conviction." The SIT probe was led by DIG (Murshidabad) Syed Waquar Raza. T he charge sheet says the father and son duo had reasoned with the rampaging mob twice and delayed the attack. The third time, however, the two were dragged out of their home and hacked to death infront of their families. Even after the murders, the perpetrators did not leave the locality and went on to vandalise and burn more houses in the area before fleeing. The SIT has charged the 13 accused of murder, armed robbery, rioting, and has also slapped smaller charges of criminal trespass, housebreaking and criminal mischief. The accused have also been charged of illegal possession of firearms under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. Conviction for murder leads either to a life behind bars or death. Armed robbery can also lead to a life term, if convicted. Police have cited 60 witnesses, and several statements were recorded before a magistrate under BNSS 183. The evidence also includes CCTV footage and telephone intercepts. Police sources said they would try to ensure an in-custody trial in the case. Bengal govt has appointed special prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee — who has successfully argued in four rape murder trials leading to death sentences last year — for a quick trial. Murshidabad violence: Police file chargesheet, name 13 in murder of father and son
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police, probing brutal murders of father-son duo during the communal violence that broke out in Murshidabad district in April, on Friday filed a 983-page chargesheet against 13 individuals. Hargobindo Das (72) and his son Chandan Das (40) were hacked to death by a mob in Jafrabad village on April 11, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district, which left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes. In the aftermath of the violence, police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs at various police stations in Murshidabad. 'Charges have been framed against 13 individuals,' Syed Waquar Raza, DIG, Murshidabad, who heads the SIT told The Indian Express. Additionally, the SIT has also reportedly named 50 individuals as witnesses to provide testimony in the matter. Out of the 13 accused named in the chargesheet, 11 had already been arrested by the police in connection with the case.
