Murshidabad violence: Police file chargesheet, name 13 in murder of father and son
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police, probing brutal murders of father-son duo during the communal violence that broke out in Murshidabad district in April, on Friday filed a 983-page chargesheet against 13 individuals.
Hargobindo Das (72) and his son Chandan Das (40) were hacked to death by a mob in Jafrabad village on April 11, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district, which left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
In the aftermath of the violence, police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs at various police stations in Murshidabad.
'Charges have been framed against 13 individuals,' Syed Waquar Raza, DIG, Murshidabad, who heads the SIT told The Indian Express.
Additionally, the SIT has also reportedly named 50 individuals as witnesses to provide testimony in the matter.
Out of the 13 accused named in the chargesheet, 11 had already been arrested by the police in connection with the case.
The 13 accused persons have been charged under various BNS Sections, including Section 191 (1) (2) (3) (rioting), Section 332 (trespass), Section 331 (house breaking) (1) (2) (3), Section 310 (2) (dacoity), Section 334 (mischief), and Section 103 (2) (murder) /3 (5), along with Section 25/27 of the Arms Act.

2 held with pistols in Ranchi, 2 others on the run
Ranchi: Acting on a tip-off related to sales of arms and ammunition, the police on Saturday conducted a raid near Pahari Mandir in Ranchi and arrested two persons. "The police also seized three country-made pistols and four cartridges from them," DIG cum Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said. Armyman held for raping colleague's minor daughter in cantonment area
Meerut: A 45-year-old havildar -- a non-commissioned officer in the Army -- was arrested late Friday allegedly for raping the 17-year-old daughter of a fellow serviceman inside his quarters in the cantonment area. Harendra Singh, the police official investigating the case, said, "Rape was confirmed in the medical report and the accused was sent to judicial remand. We are investigating the case thoroughly." The incident took place on the night of June 3. The Class 12 student had stepped out of her residence to stroll when the accused forcefully dragged her to his house and raped her, the FIR mentioned. Shaken by the incident, the girl returned home and informed her parents. The girl and her parents approached Meerut Police on June 4, following which an FIR was lodged under BNS Section 64 (rape) and relevant sections of the Pocso Act . The accused and the victim's father are posted in the same unit. The accused was produced before a local court on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody.
