Def Leppard's Joe Elliott shares process of new album: 'Laptops have become Abbey Road'

Even nearly 50 years into their career, Def Leppard still has something to say. The band recently announced Def Leppard: Live at Caesars Palace The Las Vegas Residency that will play a dozen shows in February at The Colosseum. But in the midst of planning that hits-filled spectacle, the quintet of singer Joe Elliott, drummer Rick Allen, bassist Rick Savage and guitarists Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen are also tinkering with a new album for release next year. It will be the band's first new material since 2022's 'Diamond Star Halos,' which paid tribute to the glam rock that inspired Def Leppard's sound and returned them to the charts with the soaring rocker, 'Kick.' That album marked first time the fivesome recorded remotely from around the world, primarily because of the pandemic-era timing. But the arrangement worked so well that they returned to an individual recording format. 'We're blessed that technology has allowed us to do this,' Elliott tells USA TODAY. 'We get together metaphorically rather than physically and do Zoom meetings all the time. This way five people can work on the same song at the same time and it adds excitement to the flavors of what you're doing. Laptops have become Abbey Road.' Elliott said Def Leppard already has 'plenty of stuff' ready to go, with the next steps finalizing which tracks make the final cut and determining the title and running order of songs. The new album is the 13th of the band's career, which began with 1980's 'On Through the Night.' Elliott is proud that this current incarnation of Def Leppard has been solid for 33 years (he and Savage are the longest tenured at 48 years, while Campbell joined a year after the 1991 death of Steve Clark). 'That's a remarkable feat in itself,' Elliott says. 'Back in 1977, if someone said, you're going to be together 50 years, we'd look at them like they had two heads.' Def Leppard is currently on tour with dates through August and a couple of shows in September and October before they break to prepare for their residency. Now, Elliott says, the goal is simple: 'Health allowing, we'll keep going until we feel we can't anymore.'

Found: The Perfect Holiday Shoe You Can Wear Everywhere, Including The Office

The messaging surrounding what to wear at this time of year might speak primarily to European getaways, beach days and wedding ceremonies, but the reality most of us live out is more complex. Sure, there's your five days in Sicily booked, but there's also six deadlines and that yearly review that crops up mid August. We can't abandon all commitments just because it's the last month of the summer. Sob. The toing and froing that comes with the eighth month of the year manifests most in our footwear, especially if the weather on home soil is more than fine. Investments in new shoes need to work as hard as our passports (or office passes) as we switch between on and off modes. Shoes need to be able to walk into a beach bar and thrive as much as they need to be able to take us comfortably through the now extra-sticky commute and into whatever that day's schedule has in store. So, with this in mind I got to searching for a summer sandal that could do it all. As an ELLE editor, my starting place for most trends and must-haves is the catwalk. But, not this time. I searched through my usual go-to sites for such things and spent a couple of lunchtimes strolling the stores close by to our central London office. Nothing jumped out, ticking a few of my criteria rather than all of them. Then, when researching another feature I spotted Miu Miu's leather clogs on its SS25 catwalk. This wasn't the first time I'd seen the slip-on sandals, but it was the first time I'd considered them the solution to my midsummer footwear find. The shoe, available in a selection of shades of patent or suede leathers, is a simple clog-like style that feels at once a classic and a fresh option that moves away from the dad sandals that have dominated the summer footwear market for — forgive me — far too long. On the runway, it was worn with white cotton skirts, classic beige raincoats (Brit-summer approved), and in the case of Cara Delevingne's runway look: a black patent skirt suit. Together, these ensembles were enough proof that it would work with so much of what I plan on wearing for the rest of the summer. And despite it being a 'trendy' catwalk shoe, the nostalgic design felt enduring, which makes up for its three-figure price tag in that I can be sure I'd return to it summer after summer. I'm very into my cost-per-wear these days. Choosing which colourway to go for came next. Black patent felt like the most sensible option, while brown suede offered an extra note on texture for summer layering. In the end, it was the red patent that felt like the best for me and my wardrobe. I often find myself turning to hints of scarlet in summer — gingham, floral silk scarves, a does-it-all scrunchie — and so this pair would round out that equation. I chose my usual size and found them easy to break in and get to wearing here, there and everywhere fast. Of course, this being Miu Miu and so the idea of a simple shoe worn simply feels at odds with its bookish-meets-sexy-meets-sporty ideology. Enter the accompanying demi socks. Yep, demi socks. The wearing of the instep coverings feels as crucial to the sandal as the sandal themselves. Doing little more than hiding your instep (or up to the knee if you wish), the accompanying socks, which come in a three pack, add a directional element that feels at once completely unnecessary and entirely essential to fulfilling Mrs Prada's original style directive. Choose colours that feel purposefully obtuse. Lime green worn with red feels particularly potent, but I might have to go back for the rosy pink ones. What is left to be said about this clog-style shoe is that like anything with a strong wooden sole, there is a little noise about them. They're not so much clip-clop, but a gentle tap is there with every step. Does it bother me? Not at all. I'm happy to make a little commotion for and with these wear-everywhere summer sandals. ‘Just Friends' Turned into a Summer Fling, Then Something More

In October 2014, Dr. George Anthony Russo II was making his way from Scituate, Mass., where he was staying with his parents, to Orlando, Fla., for a new job. Along the way, he stopped in Mahopac, N.Y., to visit a friend. The two went to a casino, and as luck would have it, Dr. Russo won $4,000 on a slot machine. This meant he could afford to go to Los Angeles to visit Maggie Amelia Weston, with whom he had just had a 'summer fling.' Dr. Russo and Ms. Weston met that June on her first day working as a hostess at Wahlburgers — a burger chain owned by brothers Donnie, Mark and Paul Wahlberg — in Hingham, Mass. Dr. Russo, who goes by Gidge and was not yet a doctor, was already employed there. He recalled asking co-workers, 'Who's the new girl?' Ms. Weston noticed him too: 'I remember he had a certain confidence and a certain tall, dark and handsome quality.' She had a boyfriend at the time, though the two were on the verge of breaking up, she said. In late June 2014, Dr. Russo invited Ms. Weston 'to hang out on his boat and join a bonfire on the beach with his friends,' Ms. Weston said, who by then was single, which she 'casually mentioned' to Dr. Russo. A week later, he joined her to watch 'Game of Thrones' at her parents' home in Hingham, where she was living for the summer. Still, as 'just friends,' she said, because she was moving to L.A. that fall to pursue her dream of becoming 'a star' in film and television. 'I didn't want to form any attachments that would keep me from my dreams,' she said. 'But Gidge made it very hard.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
