Dr Khaw Bee Ling, a specialist at Metro Specialist Hospital in Sungai Petani, Kedah, was reported missing on July 18 while hiking at Croda del Becco. She was reportedly hiking with a friend when they decided to split up, with Khaw continuing the ascent while her friend turned back, Buletin TV3 reported. At some point, Khaw managed to send a message to her friend saying she was lost and needed help, but she could not be reached after that. Her friend contacted the authorities, who launched a search operation using a helicopter, drones and tracker dogs to look for Khaw. She was found dead in a crevice on July 19. The authorities believe she had strayed from the mountain's path and slipped at a rocky area that was steep and slippery, before falling from a height of nearly 100m. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Government mulls raising tobacco tax: Anwar
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the proposal aligns with the government's commitment to public health and fiscal reform, particularly given the long-standing moratorium on tobacco tax hikes. Advertisement Malaysia's tobacco tax currently accounts for 58.60 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic adjustments or revaluation of the rate, which was last increased in September 2014. 'I support the spirit (of staying healthy), not just because I don't smoke, but also due to the reach of anti-smoking campaigns,' he said in response to questions on whether the government may revise the tax in Budget 2026, to be tabled in October. Anwar was speaking after attending a Budget 2026 engagement session here today. An economist reportedly suggested raising the rate to between 60 and 75 per cent Advertisement Last week, when announcing the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said the government would broaden its 'pro-health' tax beyond sugary products to also cover tobacco, vapes and alcohol. He said the expanded tax framework aims not only to increase revenue, but more critically, to encourage behavioural change and curb the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs, commonly associated with unhealthy lifestyles, include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Anwar said healthcare remains a key government priority, noting that the public system is under growing strain from medical inflation, the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and an ageing population. According to the parliamentary calendar, Budget 2026 is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PASIR MAS: Thai police will transfer dikir barat singer Wan Norshaheeda Azlin, known as Eda Ezrin, and five others to Malaysian immigration officials today. The handover will take place at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Rantau Panjang. Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan and Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat confirmed the details. Mohd Yusoff stated that police officers have been stationed at the Rantau Panjang ICQS for the process. He added that two of the six individuals entered Thailand illegally and will be detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. All individuals will undergo drug testing and have their statements recorded upon arrival in Malaysia. Eda, her husband, and four friends were released by the Narathiwat Prison Court yesterday after Thai prosecutors failed to present witnesses and evidence. The court also rejected the prosecution's sixth request for an extension on Wednesday. The six Malaysians were arrested on November 1 last year for allegedly possessing 6,059 Yaba pills. Family members of the detainees waited since early morning at the Sungai Golok Police Station in Narathiwat for their release.
