Luka Doncic agrees to a contract extension through 2028 with the Lakers, committing to his new team

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, bypassing a chance at free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team.
The deal keeps Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract.
A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the terms to The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Lakers don't publicly announce the details of contracts.
'Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud,' Doncic wrote on social media. 'Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.'
The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis. The five-time All-NBA selection and a five-time All-Star averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season while teaming up with LeBron James for 50 victories and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
Los Angeles lost to Minnesota in the first round, but Doncic enjoyed his first months in Hollywood enough to commit to the Lakers. He will return this fall alongside James, who will begin his unprecedented 23rd NBA season.
Doncic's growing comfort with the Lakers was already obvious in his offseason activity. He played a significant role in Los Angeles' successful bids to sign Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, persuading the two veterans to team up for the upcoming season.
Doncic's extensive regimen of offseason conditioning work has also been well-documented after the Mavericks' questions about his physical commitment to the sport reportedly played a role in his shocking departure from Dallas.

Nets' Egor Demin projected outside top-26 PGs for 2025-26 NBA season

HoopsHype does not rank Nets PG Egor Demin among the projected top-26 PGs for the 2025-26 NBA season. I'm projecting for Demin to start at PG for Brooklyn next season so this could be an indication of some expected struggles for Demin at the next The Brooklyn Nets had one of the more interesting offseasons in the NBA as they selected an NBA-record five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. One of the players that Brooklyn drafted, guard Egor Demin, has a good chance of being the starting point guard for the 2025-26 season, but that doesn't seem to inspire confidence in anyone on the outside looking in. In HoopsHype's ranking of the top-26 point guards for the 2025-26 season, they did not have Demin on the list, implying that the outlet doesn't believe that Demin will have a particularly effective season. To be fair, HoopsHype is projecting who the best 26 point guards will be next season and there is the possibility that the outlet doesn't consider Demin to be a point guard. Either way, Demin did not appear on the list, but that doesn't mean that he cannot have a successful rookie season even if he doesn't find a way to make it on the list by the end of the season. Demin, 19, was the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and with D'Angelo Russell leaving in free-agency to join the Dallas Mavericks, the starting point guard spot is up for grabs this offseason. In terms of players who saw minutes at the point guard position last season for the Nets, Demin will be competing with the likes of Keon Johnson and Tyrese Martin for the right to start at that spot. Assuming that shooting guard Cam Thomas re-signs with Brooklyn before the beginning of the season, that essentially pits three players to compete for one spot. Demin is the most likely of the three to start given how much the team invested in him in the Draft along with the fact that the Nets will be trying to develop Demin along with fellow rookies in Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf. With training camp about two months away from starting, there is still plenty of time for Demin to work on his flaws enough to compete with Johnson and Martin and potentially prove the doubters wrong at the same time.

Devin Williams, Jake Bird implode for gut-punch Yankees' loss in extras

Sign Up Now ARLINGTON, Texas — The first three relievers out of the Yankees bullpen on Monday night followed the blueprint perfectly. Then Devin Williams chewed it up and spit it out. After Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval and David Bednar each tossed a perfect inning to protect a one-run lead, Williams gave up a game-tying blast to Joc Pederson in the bottom of the ninth. Jake Bird then served up a walk-off home run off the bat of Josh Jung in the bottom of the 10th to hand the Yankees their fourth straight loss, this one a gut punch 8-5 defeat to the Rangers at Globe Life Field. Bird had retired the first two batters in order in the bottom of the 10th before the Yankees intentionally walked Wyatt Langford to bring up Jung, who crushed a three-run shot to end it. 6 Texas Rangers' Josh Jung, right, celebrates after his home run as New York Yankees pitcher Jake Bird (59) walks to the dugout during the 10th inning of a baseball game Monday, Aug. 4, 2025. AP The Yankees had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 10th but came up empty when Austin Wells grounded into a double play. After the new-look bullpen had faltered in brutal fashion on Friday night in Miami, giving way to a sweep by the Marlins, the Yankees looked to be on their way to a better ending in their second chance Monday. Instead, the end result was all too familiar. Coming off a miserable weekend in Miami with their playoff spot suddenly looking tenuous — the Rangers (59-55) entered the night as the last team out in the AL wild-card race but now only trail the Yankees (60-53) by 1 ¹/₂ games — Aaron Boone's club fell further into third place in the AL East. The bullpen had to get to work early on a night when Max Fried labored just to get through five innings. It was a grind for the left-hander, who gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks across 105 pitches and now owns a 5.81 ERA across his last six starts. 6 Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton, right, hits a home run that also scored teammate Paul Goldschmidt in front of Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim, left, during the fourth inning of a baseball game, Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. AP Giancarlo Stanton's home run in the fourth inning, which flew off the bat at 115 mph, had put the Yankees up 5-4. It was his 10th of the season, all of them coming in his last 24 games. The timing of it presented another reminder of the dilemma that is facing the Yankees. Aaron Judge is expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday, but he will be limited to DH, at least initially, as he begins his throwing program in the coming days. That will almost certainly force Stanton into a bench role, unless the Yankees actually take the risk of using him in the outfield. Boone said Monday afternoon that was at least a possibility once the Yankees return home on Friday, but it is hard to imagine it happening given Stanton's injury history. Paul Goldschmidt, who was on the field five hours before first pitch Monday taking early batting practice (as he will do on occasion), crushed the third pitch of the game for a leadoff home run against left-hander Patrick Corbin. It marked the veteran first baseman's first home run since June 19, going 31 games without one, a stretch in which he hit just .212 with a .566 OPS. 6 Yankees right fielder Amed Rosario (14) celebrates after he hits a double against the Texas Rangers during the first inning at Globe Life Field. In the second inning, Amed Rosario — who doubled for his 1,000th career hit in the first inning — and Cody Bellinger roped back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 3-0 game. But again, the Yankees loaded the bases, this time with one out, and stranded them all as they wasted another opportunity to break the game open. Fried gave up a one-out double and walk before the Rangers strung together four straight singles — the first three hard-hit ground balls — to tie the game 3-3. Then with the bases loaded, the Yankees ran a pickoff play at second base, but Fried's throw went into center field, allowing the go-ahead run to score from third to make it 4-3 Rangers. Fried led off the bottom of the fourth inning by issuing a four-pitch walk to No. 8 hitter Jonah Heim before Ezequiel Duran followed with a single. Those runners were on second and third with two outs when Fried got bailed out by Anthony Volpe, who made a strong sliding stab on a smoked one-hopper by Marcus Semien and bounced a throw to first that got picked by Goldschmidt to escape the jam.

"One thing that troubled James about the Bulls pitch" - LeBron couldn't commit to Chicago because D-Rose never recruited him

"One thing that troubled James about the Bulls pitch" - LeBron couldn't commit to Chicago because D-Rose never recruited him originally appeared on Basketball Network. The Chicago Bulls were one of the teams hoping to swoop for LeBron James back in the summer of 2010. According to revered NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bulls believed they had an impressive presentation to persuade Bron. While that might be the case, Woj noted that LeBron was still not buying into what the Bulls were presenting because Derrick Rose had shown no interest in teaming up with LBJ. As per Wojnarowski, the Bulls knew that it would be a big plus if D-Rose would personally recruit James. However, they couldn't resolve the issue, and Derrick never bothered to reach out to LeBron either. "For everything the Bulls tried to sell – from owner Jerry Reinsdorf to GM Gar Forman to coach Tom Thibodeau – there had been one thing that troubled James about the Bulls pitch: Derrick Rose(notes) never called and tried to recruit him," Wojnarowski revealed. "Chicago officials never directly requested Rose to reach out with a call, and the young point guard felt James could've always reached out to him had he wanted to discuss the possibility of playing together," he continued. "James needed to be courted, needed to be wooed and apparently it surprised him there was a star who wasn't falling over himself to do that," he added. D-Rose wants to beat super teams, not join them In the end, the Bulls failed to make huge progress in courting James. As it turns out, what LeBron reportedly expected at the time was never going to happen. According to former Bulls forward Taj Gibson, prime Rose was never fond of joining forces with a fellow superstar. Let alone forming powerhouse squads or the so-called "super teams." Gibson revealed that D-Rose's goal was to beat the best and win the championship, not join the best and win it all. "'Yo, he's coming through. This guy wants to come. That guy wants to come.' If you know 'Pooh,' like—he don't... he not into all that," Taj once stated. "You know, he's one of those guys that's really into going against the odds. And that was kind of the makeup of our team. We was on that. That was our whole mentality: We don't rock with nobody that's on that. We want to bring it to them," Gibson continued. LeBron and Derrick met in the ECF Eventually, James finally came up with a conclusion, which he later named "The Decision." He opted to take his talents to South Beach and assembled a Big 3 alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. That same season, the Heat and the Bulls led the league. Both squads were favorites to win the title. The Heat were viewed as championship contenders because of their intimidating lineup. On the other hand, many also believed that D-Rose and the Bulls could finally bring the championship back to Chicago after 13 long years. Inevitably, the Heat and the Bulls faced each other in the Eastern Conference Finals. Derrick and LeBron understood the magnitude of the series. They knew that playing against each other was the toughest challenge they would encounter that postseason. James and the Heat prevailed and closed the series in five games. Despite losing, Pooh never considered the "what if" of having King James as a teammate and never asked for someone to join him in story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.
