Four PCB Mentors Continue to Draw Salaries Despite Champions Cup Cancellation: Report

PCB has been criticised as Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq still receive salaries for a cancelled tournament.
In a major revelation regarding the Pakistan Cricket Board's financial irregularities, four cricketers – former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, and Saqlain Mushtaq – continue to receive salaries as mentors of a tournament that has been cancelled, according to a report in Cricket Pakistan.
As per details, in 2024, the PCB appointed five former national team cricketers, former all-rounder Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz, Misbah, Waqar and Saqlain, as mentors for a new project, the Champions Cup.
The players were drawing PKR 5 million (over Rs 15 lakh) per month, but with the tournament scrapped in recent months, their roles became redundant.
While Malik had stepped down, the other four ex-cricketers continue to draw their monthly salaries.
According to the report, the Pakistan Cricket Board has sent termination letters to Saqlain and Waqar.
Sarfaraz and Misbah have been retained by the PCB permanently, though they are yet to be assigned any new roles.
According to the report, there is a chance of their salaries being reduced and the cricketers have already been informed about this.
All five mentors had drawn criticism for receiving a hefty PKR 5 million per month. Those salaries drew criticism as they exceeded the pay of all but Pakistan's top-tier category A cricketers, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan, in the central contracts pool.
The Champions Cup had yet to generate any concrete commercial revenue. The PCB had invited team partners and sponsors, but as of last August, hadn't confirmed if any had joined.
The Pakistan Cricket Board hoped that the mentors would step down, but with contracts guaranteeing four months' salary upon termination, none chose to resign.
The PCB thus opted to end the contracts of two mentors, Saqlain and Waqar, while retaining the other two.

PM Modi once again praises leadership of Haryana CM Saini

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday once again praised the leadership of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, saying under his leadership, government jobs are being provided to the youth purely on the basis of merit and with complete transparency. The Prime Minister was addressing a programme in New Delhi on the occasion of the inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II National Highway projects connecting Delhi and Haryana at a cost of about Rs 11,000 crore. He said there was a time when Congress governments ruled Haryana, and during that period, it was almost impossible for the youth to secure government appointments without 'parchi and kharchi'. However, the BJP government has completely transformed this system. The Prime Minister said the BJP government has so far provided government jobs to lakhs of youth in Haryana on the basis of merit and transparency, and that Chief Minister Saini is carrying this tradition forward with commitment. He said the constant endeavour of the government is to simplify people's lives, which is clearly reflected in its policies and decisions. Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister, CM Saini said the Prime Minister's guidance and encouragement serve as the biggest strength for the state government. He said providing transparent and merit-based opportunities to the youth is the government's top priority, and Haryana is setting a new benchmark in this direction across the country. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with the blessings of the Prime Minister, Haryana will continue to move swiftly on the path of development and good governance. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and dedicated to the people two major development projects worth Rs 2,000 crore that will directly benefit Haryana. These projects include the construction of two four-lane connectivity roads to Sonipat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-II project. The Chief Minister said Haryana, being the industrial and agricultural hub of north India, would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects. He said these key projects will not only boost exports, imports and investments by ensuring direct connectivity from Kundli, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram and Manesar to Delhi Airport, but will also provide long-awaited relief from traffic congestion in the region.

Shoaib Bashir Responds To Nathan Lyon's 'Okay' Comment: 'I Don't Really Look...'

Last Updated: England spinner Shaoib Bashir respects Nathan Lyon despite the Australia's comment on his performance. England spinner Shaoib Bashir is unfazed by Nathan Lyon's recent comment on him and respects the Australian for the skills he brings to the table. The Australian had said Bashir had 'been okay' with his performance against India in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, while Jack Leach was the best English spinner. Bashir is currently recovering from a hand injury he suffered in the third Test of the series at Lord's. In six innings, he took 10 wickets at 54.10 on pitches that weren't conducive to spin. Bashir's exploits included the final wicket of Mohammed Siraj at Lord's, bowling with the injured hand, which won England the match. 'Everyone has their own opinions and that's fine. I just stick to what I believe and what the people around me believe. I don't really look at that stuff," Bashir told the PA news agency. 'I've never crossed paths with him (Lyon) but I have been watching him since I was young. I do enjoy the way he bowls, especially his overspin, it's a great asset he has, and the amount of revs he puts on the ball. He's someone I've been looking at for a while now," Bashir added. Bashir and Lyon will almost certainly cross paths when England visit Australia for the 2025-26 Ashes at the end of the year. The Englishman has become the first-choice in the department because of his height and variety, which would be helpful in Australia. There were concerns over his form in England, but his replacement for the last two Tests, Liam Dawson (Leach was ignored), didn't do much better to put forward his case. Bashir hasn't played a Test in Australia but did feature in five matches for England Lions here in 2024, taking only four wickets. He's determined to take his learnings. 'I learned you do get bounce but you've got to find a way to use that," Bashir said of his time in Australia. 'I've got height but there's more than just height to extract bounce from the wicket. Just small technical things. It's just (about) nailing what I do best. If you look at my attributes – I'm tall and try to put as many revs on the ball as I can, with that comes variations. I'm still learning, still quite young, I'm still trying develop my game and better myself day-by-day. That will never stop. I love talking about the game and I love learning," he added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
