Heavy rain batters Mumbai, waterlogging at Hindmata and King's Circle wash away BMC's flood control measures worth crores
Mumbai: Persistent intense rainfall on Monday left large parts of the city waterlogged, including chronic flooding spots like Hindmata and King's Circle where BMC has already spent crores on underground rainwater-holding tanks over the last few years. It was barely four years ago that BMC invested nearly Rs 16 crore at Gandhi Market in King's Circle to build an underground inlet chamber, or sump, at the lowest point to store excess rainwater and later pump it out through a stormwater drain (SWD) line into a nearby nullah. Similarly, at Hindmata, a Rs 140-crore project was implemented to construct underground tanks and enhance the capacity of existing stormwater drains. Yet, despite these measures, both Hindmata and King's Circle had rainwater accumulated for several hours. BMC attributed the flooding to neap tide conditions — when the difference between high tide and subsequent low tide is minimal, preventing the opening of floodgates and causing prolonged waterlogging on heavy rain days. On Monday, the high tide measured 3.54m at 7.55 am, while the low tide was recorded at 2.43m at 1.51pm. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Discover Effortless Glucose Monitoring: Request a Free Trial Dexcom Click Here Undo The difference was around 1.11m. "It seems the pumping system was not up to the mark. We had a dry spell for a very long period, and this wet spell, which brought extreme rainfall all at once, threw the city out of gear," he added. Other areas, such as parts below the Mrunal Tai Gore flyover at Goregaon Lokhandwala, Veera Desai Road in Andheri, Matunga, Chembur, Khar, Dadar East, and Kurla, also went underwater following the intense downpour. By 3pm, Hindmata was cleared of the accumulated rainwater. "All seven pumps at the Hindmata Pumping Station have been activated to drain accumulated rainwater in the Hindmata area. The discharge of water from low-lying areas is in progress at a rapid pace, and vehicular movement in the vicinity remains smooth and uninterrupted," said the BMC in a post on social media X. The civic body also said that in view of the continuous downpour, the entire BMC machinery has been deployed on the ground, with officials and staff stationed at various locations to closely monitor the situation. "Engineers, pump operators, health staff, and emergency response teams are carrying out field operations, with special focus on critical services such as storm-water drainage, sewerage management, and pumping stations. Immediate measures are being taken to ensure that drainage works are not obstructed. Citizens have been urged not to believe in rumours and to step out of their homes only if absolutely necessary. In case of an emergency, assistance can be sought by calling 1916," said BMC. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
