Euro 2025: Cascarino shines in France's big win to eliminate the Netherlands and top tough group
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Inspired by Delphine Cascarino's stunning six-minute spell in the second half, France surged past the Netherlands 5-2 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals at the Women's European Championship.
France's third straight win ensured it won Group D, ahead of England, which routed Wales 6-1 to finish runner-up.
The French would have been eliminated by a three-goal loss and, when the Netherlands led 2-1 at one stage, rued a bad miss by Cascarino shooting over an unguarded goal.
But the San Diego Wave winger responded with a devastating burst of running and shooting to settle the game.
First, Cascarino stole the ball from the Dutch at halfway and ran directly at the defense to set up Marie-Antoinette Katoto for a neat finish in the 61st.
Cascarino was even better three minutes later, taking a high ball 50 meters (yards) from goal and dribbling directly at goal to unleash a rising shot from outside the penalty area.
In the 67th, Cascarino scored with a well-placed shot when the ball came to her after Katoto's shot struck the inside of both posts. Sakina Karchaoui added a penalty in stoppage time.
A nervous evening became a coronation for France as the top team in the toughest group at Euro 2025. Who goes where next?
France returns to Basel to face Germany on Saturday, with the winner on a path to play Spain in the semifinals. Spain plays host nation Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Friday in Bern.
England gets two fewer days rest before playing Thursday against Sweden in Zurich. The winner of that game goes on to Geneva for a semifinal against Norway or Italy, who meet Wednesday in Geneva.
The Netherlands, champion at Euro 2017, goes home. Wales is also eliminated.

Fraud probe opened into Mbappe payments to police officers
An investigation has been opened into potentially fraudulent payments made by Kylian Mbappe to five police officers assigned to protect the French national football team, the public prosecutor's office told AFP on Thursday. Euro 2025: Spain star Aitana Bonmatí says she's mentally stronger after stay in hospital
BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Spain's opponents at the Women's European Championships maybe don't want to hear Aitana Bonmatí say she is even better as a player after her recent spell in the hospital. Bonmatí said Thursday she is '100% physically' on the eve of a quarterfinal game against host Switzerland that will be exactly three weeks since she was hospitalized with viral meningitis. "I think this new Aitana is even stronger mentally with the same ambitions," the two-time defending Ballon d'Or winner said in translated comments. 'I reminded myself who I am. 'I feel very well, you can see from my face I glad to be here,' Bonmatí added, though she acknowledged she had learned because 'I am not used to managing these kinds of situations.' Bonmatí was treated in a Madrid hospital before traveling to Switzerland one day later than the rest of the world champion and tournament favorite's squad. 'I was frustrated, I suffered I must admit. It was five days before the start of the tournament," she said at the pregame news conference at the stadium in Bern. 'What happened was unexpected. I felt super well, physically I was perfect,' she said. 'But I never thought I wouldn't be here. I thought I may miss some games.' Bonmatí even was well enough to enter from the bench on the second day of Euro 2025, in the 81st minute of Spain's 5-0 win over Portugal. She came on for the second half of the 6-2 win against Belgium, when the score was 2-1. She played the full game in a 3-1 win over Italy ensuring Spain finished top of its group. The team tied the tournament record of scoring 14 goals in the opening phase. 'I am happy because the team was super good,' Bonmatí said. 'We played an excellent tournament and now the best part is coming.' Spain faces the host nation in the quarterfinals, as at Euro 2022 in England losing 2-1 after extra time to the eventual title holder. Spain also met Switzerland in the first knockout round at the 2023 World Cup and Bonmatí scored twice in a 5-1 win in the round of 16. Spain coach Montse Tomé has a full and fearsomely talented squad to pick from with a little uncertainty over the goalkeeper position. Ons Jabeur, former world No. 2, announces break from tennis: 'I haven't truly felt happy on the court'
In 2022, Ons Jabeur was the No. 2-ranked women's tennis player. Just three years later, she's taking an extended break from the sport. Jabeur announced her break on Instagram, saying she hasn't been happy on the court the past two years. Her full statement read: "For the past two years, I've been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges. But deep down, I haven't truly felt happy on the court for some time now. "Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel it's time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living. "Thank you to all my fans for understanding. Your support and love mean the world to me. I carry it with me always. "Even while I'm away from the court, I'll continue to stay close and connected in different ways, and share this journey with you all." After reaching No. 2 status in June of 2022, Jabeur finished out the year strong and performed well again in 2023. She was a quarterfinalist at the French Open that year and made it to the Wimbledon finals, where she lost to Markéta Vondroušová. Since then, though, Jabeur has had a tough time at Grand Slams. She made it to the quarterfinals at the French Open again in 2024, but failed to progress past the third round at any other Grand Slam event in both 2024 and 2025. Thanks to those early exits, Jabeur saw her ranking plummet to No. 71 prior to Thursday's announcement. At 30, Jabeur still has plenty of time to return to the sport and play at a high level. Given her age and ability, it wouldn't be a shock to see her turn in a few more impressive Grand Slam runs before she truly calls it a career.
