Chicago White Sox activate OF Austin Slater from the 10-day injured list

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox activated Austin Slater from the 10-day injured list on Monday after the outfielder made a speedy recovery from a knee injury.
Slater, 32, got the start in left field for Chicago's series opener against the Seattle Mariners. To make room for Slater on the 26-man roster, infielder/outfielder Brooks Baldwin was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.
Slater had surgery on April 15 to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee. He batted .385 (5 for 13) over four games in a rehab assignment with Charlotte.
'So imaging showed I had a slight tear,' Slater said. "So I went under and had surgery and that was almost five weeks ago. So way faster than I thought. I think when I initially hurt it, I was like, 'Oh, that's my season.' That was my initial reaction, so pleasantly surprised by the recovery time I would say.'
Slater hit .250 (5 for 20) with a homer in his first eight games with Chicago. He agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year contract with the White Sox in November.
'Anytime you miss an extended period, you know, and watching the guys, you just want to get back out there to help any way you can,' Slater said. "So that's something I've been thinking about a lot. Hopefully I can go do that.'
Baldwin, a 12th-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft, made his big league debut last year. He is batting .215 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 44 games with the White Sox this season.
'With some of these guys coming back and getting healthy, it's going to be a little less playing time,' manager Will Venable said. 'And he's at a point in his career where he really needs to play. And we want to expose him to center field a little bit more, some more opportunity on the dirt. We just think really highly of him and want to give him a chance to have everyday at-bats.'

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic shared that the Cubs aren't expected to go after any big-name arms, as Hoyer has built a decent rotation and bullpen by adding under-the-radar pitchers. Advertisement "The Cubs have built a strong bullpen primarily by looking for value adds like Brad Keller, Chris Flexen and Drew Pomeranz. Continuing to add around the margins makes sense," the insider wrote in reference to the reliever market,' he wrote. Now, that isn't to say that there couldn't be a few diamonds in the rough for the Cubs to pursue. However, if Hoyer wants to make a splash at the deadline, which seems like something he has to do, he can't go in thinking he shouldn't trade for a star. Perhaps this is a matter for the Cubs' ownership group, but no matter what, it'll be very disappointing to see Chicago not go all in at the deadline. The Cubs have an obvious need for a starter and have been linked to Alcantara numerous times in the past several months. Replacing Justin Steele, who is out for the season, with an ace could propel the Cubs to a World Series victory. Unfortunately, Alcantara got off to a vapid pace and now maintains an ERA of 6.88. Truth be told, he has been better through three starts in June, but there are still questions around his overall reliability. With this in mind, who should the Cubs deal for a scuffling ace? According to Bowden, a package of Cade Horton, Owen Caissie, Kelvin Alcántara, and Ronny Cruz should suffice. 'Sandy Alcantara has pitched much better of late, allowing two runs or fewer in each of his last three starts,' he wrote. 'He has a 6.88 ERA on the season, but if he shows he's making even more progress toward rediscovering his Cy Young Award-winning form, what an acquisition he would be. In that scenario, adding an ace like Alcantara to their starting rotation would solidify the Cubs' chances to not only win the NL Central but also vastly improve their postseason odds and chances of advancing to the World Series. Advertisement The top three in this scenario are among the Cubs' top four prospects and MLB's top 100. Cruz is the Cubs' no. 13 prospect. Because of their staggering depth, Chicago likely wouldn't miss these prospects (aside from Horton), at least half of whom have no clear shot at a roster spot. For Miami, this would be an amazing return. For the Cubs, this would only work out if the Marlins' ace returns to Cy Young form. The clear risk remains: Sandy Alcantara has been erratic. One can understand the Cubs taking drastic measures to ensure Kyle Tucker's tenure results in a championship, but it should also be a time of caution to avoid wasting their World Series opportunity. Taking a risk on Alcantara may or may not be worth it, but at the expense of Cade Horton, who is holding the rotation together in the absence of Shota Imanaga, Javier Assad, and Steele, it is not. If Alcantara should struggle, losing Horton would only be salt in the wound. Perhaps if Horton is replaced with Moisés Ballesteros, who is also blocked from the roster, this scenario would be a solid trade. However, we still need to question if Alcantara, in his current state, is worth such a package. LSU advances with two-day win over UCLA

LSU is now in the driver's seat in its bracket of the College World Series. The Tigers picked up Tuesday morning where they left off before a storm interrupted things Monday night and rolled to a 9-5 victory over UCLA the in key game of the bracket. Jones also had an RBI single in the eighth after UCLA had closed the gap to 8-5. 'We talk about winning every inning,' Jones said. 'They put up a three-spot in (top half of the) first, so to win the inning we had to put up four. It just so happened.' 'We put up three and they put up four,' said Savage. 'We stayed in the game but … we just couldn't contain them enough at the end of the day.' Casen gave the Tigers four scoreless innings and was crusing before giving a one-out single and hitting a batter after getting first out in the eighth. Both eventually scored, but after fellow freshman Cooper Williams gave up RBIs on a single and a ground out, Chase Shores came on with the bases loaded and ended the inning on one pitch, a ground out. Shores then retired the Bruins in order in the ninth. 'I love the tempo that Casan set today,' Johnson said. 'He was outstanding, as he always is. 'Freshmen don't often transition to the SEC or the highest level of college like him. But if you know this dude, it's the least surprising thing of the season.' Casan, who struck out five in his four 4 1/3 innings, gave up four hits and didn't walk a batter. 'It's not just winning,' Johnson said.
