Moraes reminds Selangor not to give Buriram too much respect in daunting away clash

The Star2 days ago
PETALING JAYA: Selangor begin their Asean Club Championship journey tonight with the toughest of openers - away to reigning champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena in Thailand.
The Thai treble winners, who lifted the inaugural crown in May after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi, are widely regarded as the benchmark in South-East Asian football.
Striker Chrigor Moraes, who leads the line for the Red Giants and a former Buriram player himself, certainly knows the score.
But he insists the team must balance respect for Buriram with belief in themselves.
"Because Buriram are such a strong team, it's very difficult to play them at their home ground," said the Brazilian.
"But I remind my teammates we must be strong and concentrated. We too have good players, and I believe we can take the game to them.
As for Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, he sees the tough challenge of taking on Buriram as a great opportunity.
"This kind of game definitely makes us stronger,' said the Japanese tactician.
"Buriram have 16 foreigners in their squad. I don't know who will play against us but we are looking forward to see what they bring. For us, the focus is to keep our style, concentrate on our football and fight 100 percent. That's our preparation."
Kinoshi, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Serbian national team, knows the scale of the task ahead. Buriram not only boast depth but also pedigree, with several players of international calibre.
"They are one of the strongest teams in South-East Asia, along with Johor Darul Ta'zim. But last season, we earned the right to face these kinds of teams.
"I am very proud of my players and our work. To be here, to be playing Buriram, is an honour. Now we must show our style against them."
Selangor head into their debut on the Asean stage after finishing as runners-up to JDT in both the Super League and FA Cup last season.
The Chang Arena has long been a fortress for Buriram and Selangor will be wary of the champions' ability to punish mistakes.
For Selangor, the trip to Buriram is more than just a group-stage opener; it is a statement of intent. And whether they leave Thailand with points or not, Kinoshi has made it clear that the Red Giants will not compromise on their identity.
"We must show our football. We must fight and we must be proud to play against one of Asia's best.'

ASEAN Club C'ship: Munoz Praises His Men After 3-1 Win Over Lion City Sailors

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 21 (Bernama) – Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) head coach Xisco Munoz praised his players for delivering an impressive performance after defeating Lion City Sailors (LCS) 3-1 in their opening Group B match of the ASEAN Club Championship at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium here tonight. He said the Southern Tigers managed to control the match, especially in the first half, noting that the players capitalised on their chances to secure all three points in front of their home supporters. 'The players gave an amazing performance in the first 45 minutes to control the game. We scored a goal and created important chances. bootstrap slideshow 'All I can say today is congratulations to the players for delivering a very good performance with what they had,' he said during a post-match press conference. He added that the victory was the result of teamwork and commitment on the pitch, while reminding the players to maintain the same standard in the coming matches. JDT's victory was secured through two goals, including a penalty, from Joao Vitor Brandao Figueredo and one from Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi. The opening victory puts the 11-time consecutive Super League champions at the top of Group B with three points, level with Cambodia's Svay Rieng who edged Myanmar's Shan United 1-0 in another fixture. JDT will face Bangkok United in their second group match at the same venue on Sept 25. Meanwhile, LCS head coach Aleksandar Rankovic urged his players to bounce back in their next match.

Motorcycling-LCR Honda in a fix as replacement rider Espargaro injured in cycling mishap

FILE PHOTO: MotoGP - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Britain - August 4, 2024 Aprilia Racing's Aleix Espargaro in action during the race REUTERS/John Sibley/File Photo (Reuters) -LCR Honda were left in a dilemma on Thursday ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix after their latest replacement rider Aleix Espargaro was ruled out with a back injury sustained in a cycling accident. The 36-year-old Spaniard was set to step in for injured Thai rider Somkiat Chantra, who has missed the last three rounds due to a knee injury. LCR's rider shortage deepened after test rider Takaaki Nakagami -- their original replacement option -- tore a knee ligament at last month's Czech Grand Prix sprint, creating the domino effect that led to Espargaro's call-up. Espargaro's own misfortune on two wheels -- although the pedal-powered variety -- seemed minor at the time, but the Spaniard complained of back pain when he arrived at the track. "Medical examinations have revealed that his L3 vertebra is affected. He is now returning to Barcelona to undergo further tests at Hospital Universitari Dexeus," the team said in a statement. "Given the circumstances, Somkiat Chantra will not be replaced this weekend." That leaves LCR Honda with only veteran rider Johann Zarco on the grid at the Balaton Park Circuit this weekend. Espargaro, 36, is an avid cyclist and even joined Lidl-Trek earlier this year in an ambassadorial role while joining Honda as a test rider. He competed with the cycling team's development squad on the Tour of Austria. His injury also rules out a reunion on the track with his brother Pol, who will replace the injured Maverick Vinales at Tech3 KTM. JDT come out tops in battle of Causeway champions

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) wasted little time announcing themselves on the Asean Club Championship (ACC) stage, storming to a 3-1 win over Lion City Sailors (LCS) in their Group B opener at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today. The much-anticipated "Causeway Champions Clash" pitted Malaysia's Super League winners against Singapore's S-League title holders, and it was the home side who seized the early advantage. The game's first flashpoint came in the eighth minute when former Selangor stalwart Safuwan Baharudin was booked for a rash foul inside the area. After a VAR review, the referee awarded JDT a penalty, which Joao Figueiredo calmly tucked away with a precise right-footed strike into the bottom corner. The Brazilian forward doubled the Southern Tigers' lead just five minutes later, showing his predatory instincts with another composed finish from the centre of the box in the 16th minute. When fans at Iskandar Puteri were making their exit, Arif Aiman Hanapi roared the stadium back to life with a third goal in stoppage time (90+2). But the Singapore club managed to pull one back to reduce the deficit just before the final whistle (90+4) through a fantastic shot outside the box by Shawal Anuar. Next, JDT will host Thai League 1 runners-up Bangkok United at the same venue on Sept 25.
