How Pune's queer sports club is changing the game
Pune: What started as a handful of friends from the queer community meeting to play sports has transformed into a buzzing collective of over 180 members under the Pune Queer Sports Club umbrella.
For many queer individuals in India, the idea of stepping onto a sports field has long been accompanied by fear and hesitation rather than the rush of a good game. The anxiety of being stared at, judged for one's gait, voice or choice of clothes and the constant pressure to fit into narrow gender norms often pushes LGBTQIA+ people away from team sports altogether.
But in Pune, a weekend game of cricket last year sparked a movement to make sports more inclusive.
"A few of us are very enthusiastic about sports, so we decided to organise our own matches," said Vallabh Jagtap, founder of Pune Queer Sports Club. "Every weekend, our friends would bring more friends, and the group kept increasing. We organised a badminton tournament last June to celebrate Pride month and got over 30 sign-ups.
Now we have football, basketball, table tennis, swimming, chess and more," he said.
Launched in March last year by a few sports enthusiasts from the LGBTQIA+ community, the initiative is building a safe, inclusive environment where queer individuals can come together to play without fear of judgment or exclusion.
"I used to love playing cricket but stopped in school because people called me effeminate and it made me self-conscious. Last year, I started playing again. In one match, we needed four runs off the last ball. I hit a boundary and won the game. My teammates lifted me up and carried me around the field. It felt like a dream come true," said a club member.
Connected by sports, the club breaks barriers and builds friendships. Everyone who joins the games is either part of the community or a trusted ally introduced by a member.
Sessions rotate between venues across the city, ensuring that tediously long commutes don't hinder participation. "We have members living across the city, so we book different grounds to make it convenient. Connecting through sports builds strong friendships and breaks a lot of stereotypes along the way," said Jagtap.
For many members, these games are not just about fitness or recreation but about reclaiming space and joy.
"This is the first space where I can be fully myself and still be competitive. I do not have to choose between my identity and my love for sports," a member said. Those interested in joining can reach out to the club through their Instagram page. There are no membership fees, only a shared commitment to inclusion and fair play.
The club operates on a no-frills basis. Members bring their own equipment and share costs for ground bookings. For tournaments, they seek sponsors and often pool resources if someone needs gear to play. And what they receive in return is invaluable. "Before this club, I never played a sport in public. Now I play badminton every weekend. No one makes fun of how I move or speak. It is freeing in a way I never expected," said another member.
In a country where both queerness and sports have long had rigid expectations, this club offers something rare: a space to play without pressure.

Yuzvendra Chahal Clicks Selfie With Fan, Mahvash Walks Away Amid Dating Rumours
Last Updated: As speculations continue, both Chahal and Mahvash have chosen to remain silent, neither confirming nor denying the status of their relationship. Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and social media personality RJ Mahvash were spotted together at the Mumbai airport on Tuesday night, just hours after the IPL 2025 final. While Chahal paused to click selfies with fans, Mahvash maintained distance, walking off swiftly without interacting with the paparazzi. Chahal, who was part of the Punjab Kings squad this season, sported a casual look in a yellow T-shirt and blue pants. Mahvash was seen in a black tracksuit layered over a white tee. Despite arriving together, the two kept a visible distance while exiting the airport. Mahvash walked alongside a friend while Chahal briefly interacted with fans. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Viral Bhayani (@viralbhayani) This isn't the first time the duo has been seen together. Mahvash has frequently been spotted in the stands during Punjab Kings matches, seemingly cheering for Chahal. The two were previously seen leaving Bengaluru airport together during the tournament, further stoking rumours. While neither Chahal nor Mahvash has officially confirmed any romantic involvement, fan speculation has been rife, especially after the two were seen at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final. Mahvash has, however, denied the dating rumours in interviews, maintaining that she and Chahal are just friends. In a candid conversation with Yuvaa on YouTube, Mahvash opened up about her personal life and dating preferences. 'I'm very single and happy. I don't understand the current concept of marriage, and I am someone who would only date someone when I want to marry that person, so I don't go out on casual dates. Just like Ali in Dhoom, I start imagining kids and the future," she said. Chahal's personal life has been under public scrutiny ever since news of his separation from choreographer Dhanashree Verma surfaced. Their divorce was finalised at the Bandra family court on March 20, bringing an end to their marriage that began in December 2020. As speculations continue, both Chahal and Mahvash have chosen to remain silent, neither confirming nor denying the status of their relationship. First Published:

Drake wins big after RCB's IPL 2025 triumph; Did he pocket more than Virat Kohli's team?
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru team and their supporters rejoiced on June 3rd night when history was written in gold. Canadian rapper Drake too celebrated RCB's first Indian Premier League championship win as they defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in an exciting final on Tuesday in Ahmedabad. After risking $750,000 (about ₹6.4 crore) on RCB to win the IPL 2025 final, the Canadian rapper earned an incredible $1.3 million (around ₹11 crore). An 18-year wait for the title was eventually ended as RCB beat Punjab Kings by six runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. In contrast, Drake received more than half of the ₹200 million prize money awarded to the RCB champions in a matter of hours, whereas the Bengaluru team worked for 74 days to achieve the same amount. A few hours prior to the final, the rapper shared a screenshot of the wager on his Instagram account. The post gained widespread attention as fans of hip-hop and cricket showed excitement. Drake's bet comes amid an increasing trend of worldwide celebrities displaying huge interest in cricket, particularly the IPL, which is increasing cricket's appeal on a global scale. This victory and windfall might perhaps turn the Canadian star into a regular member of the RCB. While Drake was lucky enough with his wager on red and gold, Virat Kohli's much anticipated trophy was the true gift for RCB supporters. After hearing about the wager, supporters of RCB, who are known for unintentionally jinxing sportsmen and teams with his open support—the so-called "Drake Curse"—feared the worst. The rapper was blasted for his failed bid on Conor McGregor and Serena Williams. However, cricket turned out to be a a completely different case for Drake. While RCB supporters were initially hesitant, they later praised Drake for his faith.

Anushka Sharma "Suffered The...": Virat Kohli's Heartfelt Post For Wife Post IPL Triumph
Virat Kohli shared a heartfelt post for his wife Anushka Sharma, less than a day after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted their first Indian Premier League (IPL). Anushka was present in the stands as RCB beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday. After bathing in glory, alongside his teammates, Kohli went to hug Anushka, who was seen wiping her husband's tears. After embracing each other for a few seconds, Kohli planted a kiss on the forehead of Anushka. Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Kohli highlighted out Anushka has been supporting RCB for more than a decade, coming to the franchise's matches across the country even before the two got married. Kohli added that the victory means a lot to Anushka, who is a Bengaluru girl herself. "I've seen it for 18 years and she's seen it for 11. Suffered the same moments since 2014 and celebrated every close win and the madness of our supporters at the Chinnaswamy. We're both equally relieved and since shes a bangalore girl too this is far more special for her. Together all the way through @anushkasharma," Kohli captioned a photo of him and Anushka. Kohli, who scored 43 off 35 balls in the final, was overcome with emotion as the moment he had chased for nearly two decades finally became reality. "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. I've given this franchise my youth, my prime, and all my experience. I tried to win it every season, and gave it everything I had. Honestly, I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion when we won," Kohli said in a post-match interview. RCB posted a competitive 190/9 on the back of Kohli's knock, before all-rounder Krunal Pandya turned the game with a masterful spell of 2/17. Punjab Kings, despite a strong start, fell just short in the tense final moments.
