67 govt primary schools shut down or merged since 2020-21

Time of Indiaa day ago
Panaji:
Over the last five years, 17 govt primary schools across Goa were merged with neighbourhood schools to ensure their survival after they were found to have low student enrolment.
Another 50 state-run primary schools in the state closed down for want of students, as per the directorate of education's latest records.
The data shows that of the 680 functional govt primary schools in Goa, 42 could also head towards a shutdown soon with an enrolment of five or lower. A couple of schools, like the GPS Chandor, already began the new academic year 2025-26 with zero enrolment.
During the recently concluded assembly session, chief minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, said that parents over the years have shown a preference for privately managed govt-aided schools despite good infrastructure and facilities made available at govt institutions.
However, data shows that across govt primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, 592 teacher positions are either being served on a contract basis, lecture basis or part-time basis.
The sanctioned vacant posts waiting to be filled are those of 347 govt primary school teachers, 208 assistant teachers, 211 teacher grade I or assistant district education inspector, and 26 headmasters in govt secondary schools.

There is also a shortfall of 29 drawing teachers in the state-run institutes, even as art education was introduced as a full-fledged subject as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy.
The problem is particularly acute in govt higher secondary schools, where there are only 17 teachers serving on a permanent basis and 197 teachers working on a lecture or daily wage basis.
Officials said a proposal to fill up 318 posts of govt primary school teachers, 14 posts of trained English teachers, and 118 posts of assistant teachers was sent to the Goa Staff Selection Commission for processing.
The proposal for filling another 111 posts of teacher grade-I/Assistant District Educational Inspector (ADEI) was sent to the Goa Public Service Commission, while the Commission is in the process of filling up 21 posts of headmasters through direct recruitment.
The posts will be advertised by the Goa Staff Selection Commission and Goa Public Service Commission, said an official.

Amir is back, but kin of six other migrants left waiting

Kolkata: When 22-year-old Amir Sk, who had been deported to Bangladesh on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, returned home to Malda's Kaliachak last week, hope flickered in Murarai, Birbhum. There, Bhodu Sk and Amir Khan are still waiting for the return of their family members, who were sent across the border under similar circumstances. Like Amir, they had shot a video pleading for help. Unlike him, they haven't come back. Fifty-two-year-old Bhodu has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking the return of his daughter Sunali Khatun, her husband Danish Sheikh and their minor son Sabir Sheikh. His petition notes that Sunali is eight-and-a-half months pregnant. The couple, who worked as ragpickers in Delhi's Rohini, were picked up by Delhi Police during an identity-verification drive. No prior notice given. They were not told the reason for their detention," the petition says. Bhodu claims that while others picked up with them were released, his daughter's family disappeared. He says he submitted their EPICs, Aadhaar cards and land deeds dating back to the 1950s to prove citizenship, but that did not help. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is looking for skilled immigrants from Jamaica! Canadian Visa Professionals Learn More Undo Around June 26, he learnt they had been sent to Bangladesh. Amir Khan is fighting a similar battle. He has petitioned the Calcutta HC for the return of his cousin Sweety Biwi and her sons Qurban Sheikh (16) and Imam Dewan (6), allegedly deported to Bangladesh around June 27. "Apart from Aadhaar, PAN, ration card, we also produced land documents from 1966 and 1976. But those were sent back," he has alleged in his plea, calling the deportations "a betrayal of law." The Calcutta HC is scheduled to hear the matter this week. The case has slowed because of a parallel petition in the Delhi High Court. Sources say a confessional statement has surfaced in which the adults admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens. Lawyers for Bhodu and Khan have questioned the validity of such confessions, pointing out that the detainees are illiterate. Samirul Islam, chairperson of the Bengal Migrant Welfare Board and a Murarai resident, said: "The video in which they appealed for help makes it amply clear that illegalities are being committed on poor Bengali-speaking people. They have been living in Bengal for generations. I know some of the families personally. We hope the Calcutta High Court will give us justice, like in the Amir Sk case. Before deporting them, Delhi Police or BSF could have verified their identities with the Bengal govt. Intimidating and traumatising poor migrants cannot become the norm." Educationists' forum urges CM to examine concerns on SEP

Chennai: The State Platform for Common School System (SPCSS) on Saturday urged the chief minister M K Stalin to examine concerns expressed on State Education Policy (SEP) for school education and hold direct consultations with all members of the high-level committee, organisations, and individuals who presented their suggestions for strengthening it. "Student organisations, educational bodies, and educationists have come out with various suggestions to improve and strengthen the policy. The hallmark of democracy is to hear and respond to criticism," said P B Prince Gajendrababu, general secretary of the SPCSS-TN, in his representation to the chief minister Stalin. "If the policy is implemented without addressing any of the issues raised by various forums, it will have a disastrous effect on the govt-funded school education system that was built on the principles of social justice," he further said. "A policy on school education should provide a roadmap for equitable access to education for all and a smooth transition from school education to higher education," SPCSS stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Regarding the concerns, it mentioned the concept of model schools, VETRI schools, and the involvement of volunteers in curricular activities as being against the concept of Samacheer Kalvi (uniformed access to education) and principles of social justice. "A policy cannot sustain inequalities, and it is against the provisions of the Constitution," the representation said. It also called for designing the SEP for higher education more carefully and for strengthening and expanding govt higher education institutions. "The policy on higher education should be clear in ensuring full funding for all govt, govt-aided colleges, and state universities. The full grant should be provided by the govt. The university and affiliation system should continue. Each university has its uniqueness," it further said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
