Seeking a return to past glory, Blanche Ely boys' basketball routs St. Petersburg

Miami Herald06-03-2025
From the start, the goal was simple.
To restore the proud tradition of Pompano Beach Blanche Ely boys' basketball, which has won eight state championships - more than any other Broward County program.
The Tigers are one victory away from getting the job done.
A collective effort led by Kaleb Corbitt's 12 points and 10 rebounds led the Tigers to a 67-45 victory over St. Petersburg in a Class 5A state semifinal on Wednesday night at the RP Funding Center.
The Tigers (19-9) will vie to win their first state title since 2019 and Broward County-best ninth overall when they play Ponte Vedra (22-8) in the 5A final on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Sharks survived a triple-overtime game against Leesburg in the other semifinal on Wednesday.
'We put together a real competitive schedule and we didn't take days off and we feel blessed to bring Blanche Ely basketball where we feel it belongs,' said Ely coach J.R. McNabb, who coached the Tigers' girls teams in recent years.
Ely won seven state titles under former coach Melvin Randall, who now coaches at Miami Northwestern, and one in 1993 under then-coach Wade Edmond. A win Friday with McNabb at the helm would make them the first Broward school to win state titles with three different coaches.
'It feels good,' Ely senior point guard Justin Snell said. 'We've gotta bring Ely back to what it was. The job ain't done though.'
Ely traded buckets with St. Petersburg (18-12) for most of the first quarter until it put together a 12-0 surge keyed by Corbitt and Dylon Hanna, who finished with 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
'In the beginning, we came out a little slow. We're a fast-paced team and that's how we get into our stuff,' Snell said. 'We felt like we were the better team, but we just had to come out and show it.'
Once the Tigers got the engine running, they showed off their scoring balance and depth as seven players finished with six or more points. Ely's intense defensive pressure contributed to 19 St. Petersburg turnovers. The Tigers turned those into 23 points.
'I think they had 15 free throws in the first half,' McNabb said. 'Once we dug deep and did our job and secured rebounds and defended at a high level, we showed we're a pretty good team. Our best offense is our defense and we like to get out in transition.'
Four of those transition buckets were highlight-reel dunks by senior wing Jayelen Jonas, who finished with 11 points.
'What we practice translates to the game and it's all simple,' Jonas said. 'They call me their 'high flyer' and they're my family. They trust me to go up and get it. All of my guards, when they see me, they throw it up and they know I'm gonna dunk it.'

Rookie Troy Melton allows 1 hit as Tigers beat White Sox to win series

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Troy Melton allowed one hit in five innings and three Detroit Tigers relievers maintained a shutout of the Chicago White Sox in a 1-0 win on Wednesday. It was a series-clinching win for the Tigers, who advanced to 70-52 and extended a narrow lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. The Tigers are just 11-14 since the All-Star Break, while the division-rival Guardians are 16-7 in that stretch. Melton (3-1, 2.82 ERA) threw 56 pitches over five innings. The 24-year-old struck out six batters. Luis Robert Jr. hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Melton responded with three consecutive swinging strikeouts to end his day. Since giving up six earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in his July 23 debut, Melton has been responsible for just one run in four appearances. Tigers relievers Sawyer Gipson-Long, Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest combined to allow one hit over the final four innings. Vest picked up his 18th save of the season. Wenceel Pérez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning off Martín Pérez (1-2, 3.09), who surrendered three hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. NATIONALS 8, ROYALS 7 KANSAS CITY, Mo. Carlos Estévez (4-5) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits and a walk in the ninth. The Nationals took a five-run lead in the first, highlighted by Nathaniel Lowe's grand slam. Nationals starter Jake Irvin allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings. Frelick and Joey Ortiz each drove in two runs and Collins had one RBI. Bryan Reynolds got the Pirates on the board in the fifth inning off Shelby Miller with his 12th homer of the season, a three-run shot. He also had a two-run homer in the sixth off Nick Mears. McCann then homered, Blaze Alexander was hit by a pitch and Geraldo Perdomo walked on four pitches before Marte's 23rd homer. The 413-foot shot was Marte's fourth hit of the game, and came after his solo homer in the ninth inning Tuesday night for a 3-2 win. Perdomo hit a solo homer in the fifth of the series finale, two innings after scoring on one of Marte's three singles off Kelly, who exited after six innings with a 3-2 lead. Brewers win 12th game in a row — and earn all of Wisconsin free burgers

The Brewers are in hamburger heaven. The team picked up its 12th straight win on Wednesday in a 12-5 victory over the Pirates, securing free burgers for the entire state of Wisconsin from local chain George Webb and putting the Brewers on the cusp of tying a franchise record for consecutive wins. The promotion dates back to the 1940s, when George Webb predicted the Milwaukee Braves would win 12 games, according to its website. 3 Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins (16), outfielder Brandon Lockridge (20) and outfielder Sal Frelick (10) celebrate a 12-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at American Family Field on Aug. 13, 2025. Michael McLoone-Imagn Images 'Back in the 1940s, George Webb boldly predicted a 12-game winning streak for Milwaukee's team—first the Braves and later the Brewers—and famously said the city deserved a free burger if it ever happened. He didn't promise it outright—but here in Milwaukee, promises are kept,' the company website reads. Webb has had to honor its word twice since then, first when the Brewers set the record for 13 straight wins to start the 1987 season, seeing the restaurant chain give out 168,000 burgers, and then again in 2018 when the team won 12 consecutive games. The restaurant gave out 90,000 free burgers plus 100,000 redeemable vouchers in the latter instance. The chain said Wednesday that it would announce the date for the promotion on Thursday. The Brewers' latest win upped their record to an MLB-best 76-44. 3 A fan holds up a sign during the fourth inning of a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, Aug.13, 2025, in Milwaukee. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported that during the Brewers' winning streak, the team has scored 103 runs to become the second franchise in the last 80 seasons to score at least 100 runs during a 12-game winning streak. The Brewers also scored 12 or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time since 2018. Milwaukee will have a day off on Thursday before it looks to tie its franchise record on Friday against the Reds in Cincinnati.
