Commanders, D.C. agree to build stadium at RFK site
Mayor Muriel Bowser said Monday the District of Columbia and the Commanders reached an agreement to construct a new home for the football team in the city at the place the franchise called home for more than three decades. The agreement is pending D.C. City Council approval.
The team and the mayor announced the move in a video posted on social media, narrated by Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann, who spoke about his experience playing at RFK Stadium and how the new one will benefit the city.
"The time is now," Theismann said. "Let's bring Washington back to D.C."
Further details on timing and funding are expected later in the day. Bowser and team officials are scheduled to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. EDT.
Commanders ownership, led by Josh Harris, has been considering places in Washington, Maryland and Virginia since buying the team from Dan Snyder in 2022. The most recent progress came when congress passed a bill transferring the RFK Stadium land to D.C. that was signed by former President Joe Biden in early January, after lobbying on Capitol Hill by Harris and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell late last year.
Washington has played in Landover, Maryland, since moving there in 1997. The Commanders' lease at Northwest Stadium in Landover runs through 2027. Harris has called 2030 a "reasonable target" for a new stadium.
The team played at RFK Stadium, 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) east of the U.S. Capitol, from 1961-96 before moving to Maryland. Harris and several co-owners, including Mitch Rales and Mark Ein, grew up as Washington football fans during that era, which included the glory days of three Super Bowl championships from 1982-91.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns' crowded quarterback competition will add one more due to injuries. The Browns are signing Tyler Huntley, a person close to the situation said Monday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced. The Browns will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday to take part in joint workouts with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and a preseason game Friday night. Huntley will become the the sixth quarterback on the Browns roster. Joe Flacco is in the lead to start the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, but faces competition from Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Deshaun Watson is on the physically unable to perform list, but was listed fifth on the first depth chart released on Monday. Watson is expected to miss the entire season due to two Achilles injuries. However, the Browns are lacking healthy QBs at the moment. Pickett and Gabriel are dealing with hamstring injuries while Sanders sat out the Aug. 2 practice due to a sore arm. Pickett and Gabriel participated in individual drills Monday, but are questionable to do any team drills the rest of the week. Coach Kevin Stefanski would like to have Flacco go in the joint practice but sit him out of the preseason game. Barring any other injuries, that would make Sanders and Huntley the quarterbacks for Friday night's game. 'Injuries are a part of this game. They're frustrating from the standpoint of when you lose a guy for a good amount of time you feel, that's tough on the players. But the dealing with injuries, adjusting because injuries, that's just part of the game,' Stefanski said before Monday's practice. Huntley was with the Browns during the preseason last year, completing 37 of 51 passes for 322 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 92.1 passer rating before being released. He signed with Baltimore's practice squad before being claimed by the Miami Dolphins before Week 3. Huntley started five games for the Dolphins, including Week 17 at Cleveland when he was 22 of 26 for 225 yards and a touchdown in Miami's 20-3 victory. "There are plans on not having to play on the current deal," Hendrickson said last Friday. "That's something we have a common goal to get to. That's the plan moving forward. No distractions. I am excited to be here." Moving over to the offensive side of the football, the Washington Commanders are trying to keep their best playmaker happy. After failing to secure a new deal, Terry McLaurin requested a trade from the Commanders. He made it clear that he wants to get paid "what guys of my caliber are deserving of." McLaurin had instant chemistry with Jayden Daniels last season, hauling in 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Commanders would be wise to keep him around. The fourth and final holdout involves Buffalo Bills running back James Cook. He has made it clear that he wants a raise before touching the field this season. "Just business," Cook said when asked about his holdout. "It ain't no side. It's just business." Bills general manager Brandon Beane told reporters he's "hopeful" that Cook will remain a member of the team for at least the next two years. "Sometimes you can't get on the same page, or sometimes you're trying to fit it in," Beane said. "There's times guys have left here that we really wanted. We just couldn't make it work.
