STB's ecoGreenPlanet hits 62 pct of tree planting target at PNR Miri
MIRI (July 19): Over 6,000 trees have now been planted across Sarawak under the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) ecoGreenPlanet initiative.
Following the planting of 2,500 seedlings at Piasau Nature Reserve (PNR) here, the initiative has reached 62 per cent of its target to plant 10,000 trees by 2027.
Speaking at the tree planting event at PNR yesterday, STB chairman Dato Dennis Ngau said the effort reflects a deeper commitment to sustainability beyond mere rhetoric.
'Today is not only about planting trees. It is about planting hope, partnerships, and accountability.
'It is about showing the world that Sarawak doesn't just talk about sustainability – we act on it,' he said.
He added that Piasau Nature Reserve, with its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, serves as a fitting location to reaffirm Sarawak's pledge to environmental responsibility.
The ecoGreenPlanet initiative was launched in 2023 in collaboration with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), as part of the state's broader environmental goals under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Previous planting activities were also carried out at Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary and Bukit Lima Nature Reserve, where the trees planted are estimated to offset more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 10 years.
'Every seedling represents our belief that tourism can, and must, be a force for good,' Dennis emphasised.
This year's planting also forms part of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025 sustainability programme, which includes initiatives such as a shuttle bus system to reduce emissions and solar-powered charging stations and lighting supported by Sarawak Energy Berhad.
'Through the Rainforest World Music Festival, we are leading by example and showing what sustainable tourism can look like in action,' he concluded.

Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at the Youth EdXchange Programme 2025, he highlighted the importance of youth empowerment. 'Your experiences—from community immersion to sustainability workshops—prove that when given a platform, young people lead with purpose,' he said. The two-day event, attended by 60 participants, fostered cross-cultural collaboration among local and ASEAN youth. - Bernama

Rural bus Route 89 in Miri re-routed to Simpang Batu Niah to meet passenger demand

MIRI (Aug 2): The rural bus service from Miri to Long Lama (Route 89), operated by Miri Transport Company Sdn Bhd (MTC), has been re-routed from its previous stop at Batu Niah (near Niah Cave) to Simpang Batu Niah to better meet passenger demand, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Lee clarified that the service is not new, as some have claimed, but was adjusted due to low passenger numbers at Batu Niah. 'It was initially expected that there would be higher demand for Batu Niah, given its status as a tourist destination. However, passenger numbers were low, while demand for Simpang Batu Niah was stronger. This led to the decision to re-route the service,' he told reporters at Wisma Pelita Tunku this morning. Lee explained that Route 89 travels from Miri, passing through Simpang Batu Niah, Simpang Mamut (Beluru), Bakong, and Lapok, before reaching Long Lama. The service was first introduced on March 8 this year following a request by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, and originally included a scheduled stop at Batu Niah. It initially operated with two return trips daily between Miri and Long Lama. However, with the rerouting to Simpang Batu Niah and increased demand, Lee announced that the service has now expanded to three return trips daily. Lee thanked MTC for taking on the task of operating the rural bus service and responding to the needs of local communities. Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, who joined Lee at the press conference, expressed appreciation to MOTS and MTC, saying the bus service has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from rural residents. 'Previously, many residents travelling to Miri had to spend over RM100 on transport. With the rural bus service, the cost is now only about less than half of the amount. This service has truly made life easier for the people, especially those in the rural areas,' he said. He added that the introduction of an additional daily trip has provided even greater convenience and flexibility for residents to plan their travel, improving connectivity between rural towns and urban centres. Dennis also noted a rise in passengers making short day trips to Long Lama, which he said is a positive boost for domestic tourism. Also present was MTC chairman Lee Khoi Yun. Joniston applauds formation of Tawau Tourism Working Group
Joniston greeting Tawau tourism players. TAWAU (July 29): Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has commended tourism stakeholders here for taking the initiative to form a dedicated Tawau Tourism Working Group. Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), described such an initiative as a timely step towards driving more structured and impactful tourism efforts in the district. 'This shows there is energy and drive within the industry. A focused and functional working group will be a good platform to push new ideas, close gaps, and advocate for the kind of support that tourism in Tawau deserves,' he said during an engagement session with stakeholders here. Organised by STB, the engagement session gathered representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Immigration Department, Tawau airport, and key tourism players in Tawau. At the same time, Joniston emphasised that the involvement of local authorities is equally crucial, as their role complements grassroots tourism initiatives, especially efforts to develop rural areas and ensure alignment with district-level planning. He stressed local authorities and District Tourism Action Committees need to be in the thick of tourism-related development, given their responsibilities in local planning, development and socio-economic growth. 'Their participation is not just expected but necessary, as tourism is one of the key pillars under the Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, and it cannot thrive without shared responsibility,' he said. Joniston reaffirmed that the Sabah Tourism Board remains committed to supporting grassroots initiatives to strengthen tourism development at the district level. Present were STB chief executive officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit, Sabah MOTAC director Ibrahim Othman, and Tourism Malaysia Sabah director Haryanty Abu Bakar, among others. During the engagement session, Julinus shared ongoing initiatives, key strategies and future directions in line with the Explore Sabah campaign.
