ASEAN 2045: PETRA To Enhance Scope Of Regional Energy Cooperation
PUTRAJAYA, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has voiced its full support for the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, calling it a pivotal step towards realising the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also in charge of PETRA, said the ministry is committed to enhancing regional energy cooperation by finalising strategic frameworks and action plans under the Priority Economic Deliverables (PED), aimed at fostering a just and structured energy transition.
He said among key initiatives undertaken to reach the goals is the upcoming ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030, which will serve as the framework for long-term regional energy strategies towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy system across ASEAN by 2045.
Fadillah also underscored the importance of advancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) through the implementation of a Memorandum of Cooperation, which will facilitate interconnectivity between member states' electricity grids.
'This will accelerate regional grid integration and enable broader adoption of clean energy sources and pave the way for cross-border power trading and greater use of renewable energy,' he said in a statement today.
Fadillah said two other regional agreements, namely the Trans ASEAN Gas Pipeline Agreement (TAGP) and the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA), will serve as foundational frameworks to ensure secure and reliable supply chains of natural gas and petroleum, which are essential for supporting a phased transition to low-carbon energy systems, especially in power generation.
'Through these initiatives, PETRA is committed to supporting the Kuala Lumpur Declaration of ASEAN 2045, including efforts to position energy transition as a strategic pillar in building a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient ASEAN Economic Community.
'This commitment aligns with Malaysia MADANI, the national development framework that champions sustainability, well-being, and innovation. It also strengthens regional collaboration for the shared benefit of all ASEAN communities,' he said.
Yesterday, ASEAN leaders adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, which set the foundation to guide the region's development and cooperation over the next two decades.

ASEAN Ministers Unite To Accelerate Regional Power Grid, Secure Billions In Funding
ASEAN's top ministers on energy, finance, and economics have come together to advance the development and financing of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), a crucial initiative to bolster the region's energy security and economic integration. The Ministerial Interface Meeting, held on August 14, 2025, served as a strategic platform to harmonise sectoral priorities and accelerate the APG, which is recognised as an enabler of regional energy security and a key driver of sustainable economic growth. The meeting affirmed the APG's role in realizing the 'ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future' vision. New Financing Initiative to Spur Development A major outcome of the meeting was the support for the newly developed ASEAN Power Grid Financing Initiative (APGF), a platform designed to coordinate and mobilize funding for cross-border power projects. The initiative is being developed with the backing of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank (WB). The meeting highlighted significant financial commitments from these institutions: The ADB announced its readiness to invest up to $10 billion of its own resources over the next decade. The World Bank will contribute through its $2.5 billion 'Accelerating Sustainable Energy Transition Multi-Phase Programmatic Approach (ASET-MPA)' program. The ministers stressed the need for member states to strengthen their regulatory frameworks to effectively integrate these investments and ensure they align with the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) to deliver tangible benefits across the region. Enhancing Connectivity The meeting also recognised existing power interconnection projects like the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) and the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines Power Integration Project (BIMP-PIP) as vital steps toward a fully integrated grid. Additionally, the formation of the APGF Working Group (APGF WG) and the Partnership for ASEAN Connectivity on Energy (PACE) was announced. These groups will act as key platforms to connect project sponsors with financial partners and coordinate support from development partners and private sector investors, ensuring a robust pipeline of bankable projects.

PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has reminded the public and business premises in the Federal Territories to always honour the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of the nation's dignity and identity. She said that the Malaysian flag, which serves to instil patriotism among the people, must be given due prominence. Dr Zaliha also advised the public to fly the flag according to the prescribed guidelines. "What has happened in the recent weeks serves as a reminder for us to be cautious when raising the Malaysian flag, which must be in line with the recommended guidelines, to safeguard the nation's honour and the symbol of its glory," she said.
