Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has remained diplomatic amid growing uncertainty surrounding the futures of key players Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau following their absence from Sunday's MTN8 quarter-final clash.
The Brazilians powered their way into the semi-finals with a commanding 4-0 win over Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
A brace from Iqraam Rayners, a stunner from teenage prodigy Siyabonga Mabena, and a deflected own goal by Simphiwe Mcineka, ensured Downs continued their winning start under the Portuguese tactician.
Their reward?
A two-legged semi-final tie against fierce rivals Orlando Pirates, with Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United set to contest the other side of the draw. But despite the emphatic display, much of the post-match discussion centred around the notable omissions from the matchday squad.
Shalulile, Ribeiro and Mudau were all missing, sparking speculation amid ongoing reports linking the trio with moves away from Chloorkop.
Lucas Ribeiro must go if their is a good offer for him
He gave us a solid two seasons
He deserves it
The show must go on
We are Mamelodi Sundowns!! — Sandile Dhlomo (@DhlomoV) July 28, 2025

Ribeiro, the reigning Footballer of the Season and top scorer, has been heavily linked with Qatari SC and Fluminense in Brazil. Shalulile, meanwhile, is said to be in negotiations with Tunisian giants Esperance, while Mudau has yet to commit to a new contract with the defending champions.
Cardoso, however, opted for a composed response when questioned on the matter.
'All those things are being sorted out by the club and I'm sure they will be public in proper time,' Cardoso said, after the game.
'I understand what's happening with Lucas, Peter, or Thapelo Morena, who was not here because he had a small injury. But as a coach, I would want to have the team as complete as possible, and all coaches want to receive reinforcements for the new season as quickly as possible.'
With Downs already juggling a busy start to the season, Cardoso acknowledged the reality of player movement — but made it clear the standard at Chloorkop will not drop, regardless of who's available.
No Ribeiro, No Shalulile, No Mudau....

Kaizer Chiefs news: Baartman, Velebayi and Ighodaro

As reported in June, the Kaizer Chiefs thought they had secured both players as free agents. However, Cape Town Spurs responded by claiming that the duo is still under contract. Image: FARPost Due to Spurs' dramatic relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship (second tier) to the ABC Motsepe (third tier), Kaizer Chiefs followed the PSL's rulebook, which states that relegation to the third tier makes player contracts null and void. The situation has stalled Kaizer Chiefs from announcing and registering the two players. While the legal battle is still underway, Junior Khanye has reviewed the two players' abilities. Pirates and Sundowns news: Oswin Appollis and Lucas Ribeiro 'Out of the two Cape Town Spurs players Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly targeting, I really hope they succeed in signing Baartman – he's got the qualities to do well at the club. Pirates and Sundowns news: Oswin Appollis and Lucas Ribeiro

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has lauded Oswin Appollis for his standout debut, but made it clear that the talented winger still has much to learn tactically. The new Orlando Pirates number 12's performance earned him the Man of the Match award and won over the Buccaneers' faithful instantly. According to Ouaddou, Appollis is a joy to watch with his attacking instincts, but his development is far from complete. Stellenbosch's young guns hungry to turn the tables on Kaizer Chiefs, says Barker

Langelihle Phili of Stellenbosch FC | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Stellenbosch FC's MTN8 quarter-final hero Langelihle Phili may have to wait a little longer before he cracks a place in the starting line-up, according to coach Steve Barker. Phili is one of the most promising young attackers in the country, having played a considerable role in helping the SA U20 team to the Afcon title earlier this year. The 20-year-old showed his prowess in front of goal again last Sunday by coming off the bench to net the match-winning goal in extra-time to see off AmaZulu at the DHL Stadium. The youngster would no doubt have wanted to continue the momentum in the much-anticipated Betway Premiership opener against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday (kick-off 5.30pm). 'Everybody is knocking on the door,' Barker said, at the Premiership launch in Sandton on Tuesday. 'That's the nice part, especially young players. They are hungry to play, hungry to start. But he plays in the same position as Sanele Barns, who scored two goals on Sunday, so it doesn't make it easy.' Barker was, though, looking forward to Phili building on his positive start to the new season. 'It's nice when a player comes on and wins the game for you. Langelihle is a very exciting player. I am looking forward to him having a breakthrough season. 'I think scoring in the first game of the season will give him the real confidence and belief that he can reach the potential that he has.' Barker's attention is fully focused on turning the tables on Chiefs in the season opener after the Amakhosi held the upper hand over their Western Cape rivals last season. Nasreddine Nabi's Phefeni Glamour Boys achieved a hat-trick of victories over Stellies in all competitions and it still rankles with the veteran coach. 📸 𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: The 2025/2026 #BetwayPrem launch event at The Galleria — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) August 5, 2025
