Late Arklow woman Breda Smyth was a generous soul who ‘never feared a challenge'

A native of Rathdowney, County Laois, Breda studied at the College of Hotel Cookery Dublin from 1961 to 1963, before moving to Arklow to join the team at the Arklow Bay Hotel.
As many may recall, Arklow had a vibrant social scene back then, during the showband era, with Brendan Bowyer, the Ormonde Hall, and the Entertainment Centre, and it was at the latter that Breda was first introduced to a young chap from County Meath named Peter, and it was love at first sight.
Married in 1970, the couple set down roots on Emoclew Road, where Breda made it their home. Together, they knitted themselves into the fabric of the community, with Breda channelling her time and energy into a myriad of local causes.
From her work with the Arklow CBS board of management and the school's parents council fundraising committee, to the Fr. Murphy Athletic Club, Arklow Meals on Wheels, Minster of the Eucharist, Arklow Music Festival or the Parish Bingo, Breda never feared a challenge, and her support was always delivered with a warm smile.
Aside from her community work, family was so important and meant everything to Breda. She never forgot her Laois roots, returning regularly to visit brothers, nieces and nephews and always there to help where she could.
Breda was a devoted mother to her three sons, Damien, Paul and Killian and grandmother to her five grandchildren (a role she embraced), Jodie, Lexi, Billy, Lauren and Eve, whom she adored. Birthday cakes became works of art, almost too good to eat, with Breda revelling in their sporting, artistic, or musical successes.
'When sickness took its grip and our family began to collapse with heartache, it was Breda who gently reminded us of our inner strength and faith,' a family member said.
'She never complained, she never blamed, she was at peace, and a big thank you to Breda's dear friend Fr. Martin Cosgrove, who was instrumental at that most difficult time.'
Breda Smyth of Clon-Kiel, Emoclew Road, Arklow, died on February 14. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Peter, her sons Damien, Paul and Killian, her daughters-in-law Linda, Tanya and Lisa, her grandchildren Jodie, Lexi, Billy, Lauren and Eve, the extended Doherty and Smyth families, neighbours and friends.

It is understood the woman, aged in her 20s, has paid back some of the monies to date, with the publication adding that she has been 'fully cooperative' with investigating Gardaí. A statement from An Garda Síochána issued via Instagram on Wednesday afternoon urged festival fans to 'exert a great degree of caution' when trying to purchase tickets for sold-out events such as EP. They said: 'We are currently investigating alleged incidents of online fraud (alleged resale of event tickets) that are believed to have occurred in recent weeks. 'If you may have been a victim of online fraud, please report it to us at your local Garda Station in person or by phone, or alternatively call the Freephone Garda Confidential Line: 1800 666 111. 'It is very important that you exert a great degree of caution if attempting to purchase tickets for a sold-out event through any third-party known or otherwise. 'Do not trust that the tickets you believe you are purchasing are real. 'It is likely that they will not materialise and in fact, do not exist. 'Please do not send money through any app in advance.'

Downward Daithi - Rose of Tralee hosts leave viewers in stitches with yoga demonstration

The hosts of the Rose of Tralee left audiences in stitches with their yoga antics earlier this week. Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas returned to host the annual pageant, with Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins taking home the title thanks to her expertise as an apprentice electrician and her jive. Despite Katelyn's win, one of the highlights of the show came on night one — when Carlow Rose Katie Ryan showing off her yoga instructor skills, naturally using Kathryn and Dáithí as volunteers. View this post on Instagram A post shared by RTÉ One (@rteone) Alongside her two dogs that she uses for help with dog yoga, Katie got Kathryn and Dáithí to partake in breathing exercises, and even got them into the downward dog position. Kathryn was a natural at the pose, but Dáithí could use a little more work — with Katie saying 'Kathryn, gorgeous. Dáithí, can we straighten those legs? What do you think?' It wasn't exactly a walk in the park for Kathryn either, however — who ended up apologising to the folks on the side of the stage when she did the three-legged dog, as she joked they may have seen more of her than they would've bargained. Naturally audiences at home thought the demonstration was brilliant. 'The two dogs were fantastic and the same can be said for the two labradors,' one joked, while another joked 'gone to the dogs.' Pic: Domnick Walsh While the demonstration was a fan favourite, Laois' rose Katelyn Cummins was the one to take home the crown — and while she has a very busy year ahead of her, she said that she's eager to get back to finish her apprenticeship. 'I think I'll go back to work,' Katelyn told Morning Ireland on Wednesday. 'I'm raring to go back, to be honest, I'm really excited to get back.' When asked about juggling her newfound responsibilities as Rose of Tralee and doing her apprenticeship and degree, nothing seemed impossible in her eyes — but she knows where her priorities lie. 'I suppose I'll be going with my apprenticeship the way I've been going for the past two years, and just kind of continue my duties as the Rose of Tralee on the side as well, but definitely my career will be a priority for me.'

Pic: Domnick Walsh 'I suppose having hearing disability does have its challenges as well. But I wanted to make this experience was about me and not about my disability, which was, I suppose, different for most people. 'But I wanted to make it about me, my personality and everything else, and not just about my disability.' As well as being the first Laois Rose Katelyn, also made history by being the first Rose to forge a career as an electrician Laois Rose Katelyn Cummins jiving on stage with her Escort Tommy Meade. Pic: Domnick Walsh 'I'm absolutely delighted to be able to represent women in the trade world,' she added. 'It's absolutely incredible. I think I'm actually inspiring a lot of young girls, and hope to continue to.' Katelyn said that while she has made the decision to turn to college she says it shouldn't define women or impact their future prospects. 'I think it's just very important that we are made aware of it and I think a lot of women really do think they do have to go to college.' 'I don't think there is a personal preference, whether it could be a pageant or a rose. 'I think they're all equally celebrating women. I think it's just amazing that women are so confident in themselves and they're wanting to put themselves forward to be able to represent themselves, a community (and) their family.'
