
Cyber security: Would you pay someone to break into your office?
But that's not always the case.
Despite office security desks, it's easy to disguise yourself and simply walk in, a cyber security trainer told Euronews.
'Many people, when they see a high vis top, they think: 'Oh this person's an engineer' or something like that, and then just let them walk through.'
While we're all aware of cyber attacks and the increasing threat they pose to businesses—particularly in light of recent attacks on Pandora, Chanel, Adidas and Victoria's Secret—most of us significantly underestimate the physical ways our defences can be breached.
Global cyber security spending is projected to reach $213 billion (€183bn) in 2025, up from $193 billion (€166bn) in 2024, according to the latest data from Gartner, Inc. Despite this, according to Cisco's 2025 cybersecurity readiness index, only 4% of organisations globally are fully prepared for modern threats.
According to security experts Sentinel Intelligence, physical security is a critical blindspot in our defences, and the consequences of ignoring this attack vector can be disastrous.
The physical frontline of digital security
The overall cyber threat in Europe is estimated to cost €10 trillion in 2025 and it's only set to grow, according to a recent interview with software company Splunk.
In terms of physical cyber attacks, the threat is real and dangerous, as shown by the World Security Report 2023. Research found that large global companies, meaning those with combined revenues of $20 trillion, reported $1tn (€860bn) in lost revenue during 2022, directly caused by physical security incidents.
That could mean a hacker gaining access to your office building in order to target your digital infrastructure.
Penetration testing is a common service, commissioned by business leaders to test their internal defences. If you work in a big office, it has probably happened around you, without you even knowing.
Euronews Business spoke to Daniel Dilks, director of operations at Sentinel Intelligence, to learn exactly what some of their recent tests have entailed.
Case 1: Tailgating & access breach at a corporate headquarters
'Sentinel operatives dressed in business attire entered the building by tailgating staff during the morning rush, carrying fake ID badges and a laptop bag to blend in. Once inside, they located an unsecured meeting room, connected to the guest Wi-Fi, and left a rogue device (a network implant),' Dilks told Euronews.
Case 2: Out-of-hours lock picking & data exposure
'During off-hours, testers gained access by picking a standard euro-cylinder lock on the side door. Once inside, they accessed an unlocked filing cabinet containing printed client contracts and passwords. No alarms were triggered,' Dilks explained.
And for a criminal, once they've figured out how to enter a building, they can potentially do it on numerous occasions, each time gathering more information or causing more damage.
Case 3: Social engineering & credential theft simulation
'An operative posed as a contractor for the building's heating and ventilation system. After entering with a high-vis vest and fake work order, the individual was escorted into a server room by staff who believed the visit was scheduled. While inside, they photographed exposed credentials and connected a USB 'dropbox' to a workstation,' he added, explaining that it's common for penetration testers to leave USB pens scattered around offices.
Many workers, in the hope of being helpful, will plug them into their computers to see who it belongs to. In a real world attack scenario, this could introduce malware directly into your company network.
In all of these examples, poor physical security measures, reluctance to challenge or verify unknown people, and making basic mistakes like writing passwords on post-it notes could all lead to serious consequences.
What are the consequences of a cyber attack?
Though it's tricky to break down the exact cost of a security breach, attacks have short- and long-term consequences for a business.
There are the initial direct costs which could be linked to physical damage.
'Somebody manages to break in, and they sabotage your system, they basically smash it up, right? So there's a direct cost there to the actual equipment,' the cyber security expert explained.
'But if damage to the equipment means you're not able to function for several days, that's loss of business. And sometimes when a customer can't reach you several times, they may decide to go elsewhere.'
The expert explained that consequences can quickly intensify if data is wiped and backups don't work, adding that organisations can crumble without their systems.
Indirect costs could also have enduring ramifications.
'Let's say someone steals your data and then there's intellectual property or confidential documents and then they get leaked. What's the cost to the organisation? There's a reputational cost there, they may lose contracts when the customers lose trust in them.'
Companies can also be fined for these sorts of data breaches.
Surprising attack vectors
The cyber security expert shared some particularly surprising ways that criminals have hacked into company systems in recent years.
'There was this case where in a casino in the US, attackers gained access to the network, not through going directly through the main part of the network, but they compromised a water-regulating device in an aquarium that was connected to the system.'
And whilst we might not all have aquariums in our homes and offices, smart devices can be vulnerable too.
'When smart kettles first came out, the security community was very interested,' the expert explained.
'If you go to a cyber security conference, sometimes you'll see a demo of them hacking a kettle and then extracting the WiFi password, and then using the WiFi passport to then go into a network, and many things can snowball from there'
If you're running a company, it's worth identifying all the possible ways you could be attacked.
Even so, the expert emphasised that while we need to exercise caution, it doesn't mean we need to be rude or unkind to strangers in the workplace out of fear.
'Just be wary and be aware. We don't need to change our nature and be unkind to everyone, but we just need to be aware that there are some malicious people out there.'

Tech expert: AI is key to bridging productivity gap between EU and US
Despite cultural similarities and technological progress, the productivity gap between Europe and the United States not only persists – it's growing. Euronews spoke with new technology market expert Dawid Osiecki, who recently co-authored a 40-page report analysing economic development on both sides of the Atlantic, about why this is happening and what might change. "We recently conducted a study that clearly shows: the difference between the US and Europe isn't just about money," Osiecki said. "It's also about the number of large companies that can effectively implement new technologies, including AI" or artificial intelligence. AI: opportunity or challenge in technological revolution? "Comparing data since 1996, we see very clearly that the US has emerged more effectively from successive crises – the 2008 financial crisis, the pandemic, and the current one related to AI transformation," Osiecki said, adding that each crises led to increased production in the US. But in Europe, the response has been "stagnation," he added. The key differences? Investments and the structure of the economy. The US stock market is dominated by the so-called Big Tech companies – the seven largest technology companies that not only generate enormous value growth but also effectively implement the latest technologies. As for Europe, "we didn't seize this opportunity," Osiecki said. The economist and former Italian prime minister Mario Draghi's report on how to improve the European Union's competitiveness indicates that AI could be Europe's chance to close the gap with the US. But even here, the situation is not simple. European workers claim to understand the benefits of AI by a whopping 95 per cent, yet two-thirds fear losing their jobs. Meanwhile, three-quarters indicate they lack meaningful access to AI tools in the workplace. And one-third say they do not have training or education that would allow them to better use new technologies. Fewer giants, more mid-sized companies Data collected in a study of 800 companies from six European countries shows that the largest European companies (valued over $10 billion or €8.68 billion) are adopting AI at a rate comparable to American giants. The challenges begin among smaller companies. "The problem lies at the bottom. Smaller companies, especially those valued between $1 billion and $2.5 billion [€2.2 billion], are three times less likely to successfully implement AI than their American counterparts," Osiecki said. Furthermore, the European economy is more fragmented: there are more mid-sized companies, but fewer global giants. These smaller organisations often have limited access to technology, tools, and specialised staff. Company size isn't the only factor. Sector differences are equally significant. The aerospace, defense, and advanced industries are leaders in AI use in Europe. Meanwhile, the public and energy sectors lag significantly behind, with differences reaching dozens of percentage points. Results vary similarly between countries. Switzerland, Germany, and France lead the way, but after taking into account sectoral structure, the United Kingdom emerges as the leader, with AI adoption rates exceeding 50 per cent. On the other hand, while France has large companies and high technological ambitions, it shows surprisingly low adoption rates – around 30 per cent. Spain and Italy are at the bottom of the rankings. Investment is the biggest challenge, according to Osiecki. Between 2013 and 2023, investment capital in new technologies in the US was 5 to 7.5 times greater than in Europe. At the same time, European companies tried to compensate with organisational differences – to no avail. "You can't just tighten your belt for a decade and expect results. You have to invest, train, and implement new technologies with courage," Osiecki said. How to bridge the gap European bureaucracy is often perceived as a barrier to innovation. According to Osiecki, this is not a problem for the largest players in Europe. "For smaller companies, however, regulations can be an excuse or an obstacle," he added. In his opinion, the key is not only simplifying regulations but faster decisions, greater courage, and mass technological education. The EU has ambitious goals: by 2030, 75 per cent of companies should use cloud technologies and AI, and at least 20 million citizens should possess advanced digital skills. Increasing investment in new technologies, supporting medium-sized companies in adopting AI, bridging the gap between sectors and countries, unlocking tools for employees, and providing them with training will be crucial, Osiecki said. "If we don't do this, European productivity will continue to lag behind. And with it, the competitiveness of the entire continent," he said.

Which nations have the highest and lowest minimum wages across Europe?
Millions of workers across the EU continue to earn minimum wage. The thresholds are intended to provide a basic standard of living for workers, although the levels have often failed to increase with inflation. As of July 2025, the monthly minimum wage before deductions in the EU ranged from €551 in Bulgaria, to €2,704 in Luxembourg, according to Eurostat. When EU candidate countries are included, Ukraine has the lowest minimum wage, at just €164. Five EU countries—Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, and Finland—do not have a national minimum wage at all. Though Luxembourg ranks at the top and Ukraine at the bottom, when adjusted for purchasing power, how does the minimum wage across Europe compare country by country? Gross minimum wages in Europe As the chart below shows, there are significant differences in minimum wages across Europe, and Eurostat groups countries into three wage levels. Euronews has added a fourth category which groups nations with minimum wages under €600 and includes EU candidate countries. 1- Highest Group: Above €1,500 Except for France, which offers €1,802, all other countries in the highest group pay over €2,000 in monthly minimum wage. Besides, Luxembourg, these include Ireland (€2,282), the Netherlands (€2,246), Germany (€2,161), and Belgium (€2,112). 2- Mid group: Between €1,000 and €1,500. Several countries in the mid group are just above the €1,000 threshold. 3- Low group: Between €600 and €999 4-Very low group: Below €600 Several countries, including one EU member, have minimum wages below €600. This lowest group is mostly made up of EU candidate countries. It includes North Macedonia (€584), Turkey (€558), Bulgaria (€551), Albania (€408), Moldova (€285), and Ukraine (€164). Minimum wages reflect East–West divide As the map below shows, there is a strong geographical divide in nominal minimum wages across Europe. This is most notably between Western and Eastern Europe. In general, the four wage groups reflect different regions of the EU. Countries in the highest group are mainly in Western and Northern Europe. The mid group includes several countries from Southern and Central Europe. The low and very low groups consist mostly of Eastern European, Balkan, and EU candidate countries. Role of higher productivity on wages According to Dr. Sotiria Theodoropoulou of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), higher productivity usually equates to sustainably higher wages and salaries in general. Economies with more industrial or financial activity tend to be more productive, and high-tech industries also typically show higher productivity levels. Higher bargaining power for workers is another factor. Minimum wage rankings shift with purchasing power When comparing minimum wages across countries, purchasing power standards (PPS) are important because the cost of living varies widely. PPS provides a fairer comparison by using an artificial currency that reflects what people can actually buy in each country. One PPS is an artificial currency unit that, in theory, buys the same amount of goods and services in every country, according to Eurostat. When adjusted for purchasing power, the wage gaps between countries become significantly narrower. For example, in Luxembourg, the minimum wage is 4.9 times that of Bulgaria — the highest and lowest in the EU. In PPS terms, this gap narrows to 2.3 times. While Luxembourg (2,035) still ranks at the top, Estonia (886) has the lowest PPS minimum wage. When EU candidate countries are included, Albania is an outlier at the bottom, with a PPS of 566. At the top, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium follow Luxembourg. Ireland and France come next. While Eastern and Balkan countries often rank low in euro terms, they perform much better in PPS terms. Western European countries still lead, but their advantage is smaller. For example, seven EU member states rank below North Macedonia, Turkey, and Montenegro in PPS terms. These include Malta, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Bulgaria, Latvia, and Estonia. In addition to Turkey and North Macedonia, Romania also ranks significantly higher in PPS. Montenegro and Bulgaria hold relatively stronger positions as well. Estonia and Czechia are the two countries that lost the most ground in PPS rankings compared to their positions in euro terms. Minimum wages changes over the past 6 and 12 months Over the last six months, from January to July 2025, the minimum wage remained unchanged in most EU and candidate countries. In euro terms, North Macedonia recorded the highest increase at 7.7%, followed by Greece with 6.1%. Turkey saw the largest drop, with a 21.2% decline, followed by a 9.9% fall in Ukraine. In candidate countries, changes in exchange rates played a major role. For example, in Turkey, the minimum wage stayed the same in Turkish lira during this period. However, minimum wage earners have been hit hardest by the highest inflation rate in Europe. Between July 2024 and July 2025, Montenegro and North Macedonia recorded the highest increases in minimum wages, both above 20%. In contrast, Ukraine and Turkey experienced the largest declines. Among eurozone countries, Croatia saw the biggest rise at 15.5%, followed by Lithuania with 12.3%. In France, the increase was modest at just 2%. Spain and Germany recorded slightly higher gains, with 4.4% and 5.2% respectively. However, when inflation is taken into account, the real value of these increases is likely much smaller. The UK National Minimum Wage increased by 6.7% from April 2025.
