Gold Prices in Egypt Slide Amid Dollar Strength; Investors Stay Cautious

Waleed Farouk
Gold prices in Egypt's local markets fell Tuesday as global gold prices dropped, pressured by a stronger U.S. dollar and declining demand for safe-haven assets.
The price of 21-karat gold dropped by 30 Egyptian pounds to 4,610 EGP per gram compared to Monday's close. The global gold ounce fell by $51 to $3,291. Prices for 24-karat gold stood at 5,269 EGP per gram, 18-karat at 3,952 EGP, and 14-karat at about 3,074 EGP. The gold pound was valued around 36,880 EGP.
Monday saw a similar decline, with 21-karat gold falling 40 pounds during the session, while the ounce lost $16.
The dip reflects a broader global trend as the dollar gains strength and investors pull back from gold amid optimism over U.S. economic data and a more flexible stance by the U.S. administration on tariffs affecting European trade.
Gold, traditionally a safe haven during economic and political uncertainties, faces pressure when the dollar strengthens, as the metal's dollar-denominated price becomes costlier for holders of other currencies.
Despite recent losses totaling about 70 pounds over two days, gold remains an important hedge against inflation and market volatility, retaining appeal for Egyptian investors looking to diversify portfolios.
Market watchers are eyeing the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting minutes, due Wednesday, for clues on future interest rate moves. Data on the Fed's favored inflation gauge, the core Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, is expected Friday.

Slight Decline in Local Gold Prices as Markets Await U.S. Data and

Waleed Farouk Gold prices in the local market recorded a slight drop during Thursday's trading, pressured by a modest decline in global spot prices as the U.S. dollar saw a mild rebound. The market is on edge ahead of the U.S.-Russia summit scheduled for tomorrow in Alaska. Local gold prices fell by about EGP 5 compared to Wednesday's close, with 21-karat gold now trading at EGP 4,570 per gram. Globally, spot gold slipped $4 to $3,355 an ounce. In other categories, 24-karat gold stood at EGP 5,223, 18-karat at EGP 3,917, and 14-karat at EGP 3,047, while the gold pound coin was priced at EGP 36,560. On Wednesday, prices remained relatively steady, with 21-karat gold opening and closing at EGP 4,575 per gram, while spot gold rose $11 from $3,348 to $3,359. Market Drivers Gold is currently trading in a tight range near $3,355 per ounce, as a stable U.S. dollar limits its upside. Market sentiment remains fragile ahead of the U.S.-Russia summit, following U.S. President Donald Trump's warning of 'very severe consequences' if Russia does not end the war in Ukraine, according to CNN. Analysts are divided: some see the talks as a chance to ease tensions, while others fear a failure could escalate geopolitical risks, spurring safe-haven flows into gold. Focus on U.S. Economic Data Investors are awaiting U.S. weekly jobless claims and July's Producer Price Index (PPI) data for clues on the Federal Reserve's policy direction. U.S. Treasury yields fell for the second consecutive day, with the 10-year yield dropping to 4.213% and the 30-year yield to 4.803%, amid rising expectations of rate cuts. According to CME's FedWatch tool, markets are now fully pricing in a 25-basis-point cut in September, compared to about 60% odds a few weeks ago, with additional cuts likely in October and December. Federal Reserve Commentary U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Fed should cut rates by 150–175 basis points, calling for an immediate 50-basis-point reduction in September. In contrast, Fed member Austan Goolsbee stressed that rate cuts require several months of favorable inflation data, while Raphael Bostic said the central bank has the 'luxury of waiting' and expects only one cut in 2025. Data Expectations Initial jobless claims are forecast to rise to 228,000 from 226,000 the previous week, with continuing claims steady at 1.96 million. PPI is expected to increase by 0.2% month-on-month and 2.5% year-on-year, while the core PPI is seen up 0.2% monthly and 2.9% annually. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

OPPO solidifies global patent leadership, ranked among the world's top ten Chinese patent filers in Europe and, USA

Dubai, UAE, August 2025 — OPPO, a leading global smart device company, has confirmed its top ten world ranking among patent filers for Chinese companies, announcing that it has filed more than 115,000 patent applications worldwide, with 63,000 granted and approved. As of July 2025, the global consumer tech powerhouse has filed patents in more than 40 countries and regions, including 787 in the Middle East. In 2024, OPPO demonstrated significant intellectual property strength, ranking 7th globally for granted Chinese utility patents, 2nd among Chinese companies for European patents, and 6th among Chinese companies for US patents. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), OPPO ranks among the Top 14 global organizations filing patents under the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) – an international agreement that allows businesses to file patent applications seeking intellectual property protection in multiple countries. Leading 5G network technology deployment: OPPO's commitment to advancing technology is underscored by its extensive 5G Standard Essential Patents (SEPs), which are deployed in over 40 countries and have been declared to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). A proactive contributor to 3GPP, OPPO this year ranks 8th globally for comprehensive 5G patent strength, according to LexisNexis IPlytics. The company maintains a leading global position in video standard patents and is significantly expanding its global AI patent portfolio, with a focus on key areas such as image processing, computer vision, voice technology, natural language processing, and machine learning. Supercharging flash charge technology: OPPO is also supercharging the adoption of its flash charge technology, which has been licensed to over 60 companies across various industries, including consumer electronics, shared power banks, and in-car charging. This expansion is driven by OPPO's 'Flash Initiative,' launched in 2021, which aims to integrate its innovative charging IP beyond smartphones into diverse applications for enhanced user convenience. Notably, OPPO's flash charge patented technology is now integrated into more than 10 million vehicles worldwide. Through strategic patent licensing collaborations with automotive manufacturers, chip makers, and module suppliers, OPPO is actively building a robust fast-charging ecosystem for the automotive sector, demonstrating its commitment to broad industry innovation.

AD: Tracking the Growth of Egypt's New Capital

AD: Tracking the Growth of Egypt's New Capital With ministries, universities, cultural landmarks, and growing residential communities in place, the New Capital is preparing for Phase 2. Fifty kilometres east of Cairo, Egypt's New Capital is shifting from an ambitious blueprint to a functioning urban centre. Conceived as part of a broader national plan to expand and modernise the country's urban footprint, the city now houses ministries, universities, cultural landmarks, and a growing residential population—while laying the groundwork for its next phase. The master developer is the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD), a joint stock company operating under the Egyptian Tax Authority. ACUD is self-financed, carries no debt, and is responsible for overseeing the capital's phased development, infrastructure, and urban planning. Phase 1, which covers the government district, major residential zones, and core infrastructure, is 70% complete and operational. Around 25,000 families live in the city, alongside 50,000 government employees, 12,000 university students, and 20,000 school pupils. The Egyptian Cabinet has operated from here for two years, with all ministries now based in purpose-built offices. Education has emerged as a cornerstone of the New Capital's development. Six universities are already in operation—including the University of Hertfordshire, Egypt University of Informatics, the European Universities in Egypt, the Universities of Canada in Egypt, the German International University, and The Knowledge Hub. School options range from the Nile Egyptian International Schools to the Royal Canadian School-Cairo, New Capital English Schools, Cadmus International Schools, Citadel International School, and NIS by Dr. Nermien Ismail. Civic and cultural landmarks have also taken shape. The City of Arts and Culture has hosted concerts from Egyptian soprano Amira Selim and international artists such as Michael Bublè. Egypt's Islamic Cultural Center and the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ stand as architectural and symbolic anchors for the city. Connectivity, often a critical measure of a new city's viability, has been prioritised. The New Capital links to Cairo and New Cairo through an expanded road network, with the Light Rail Transit (LRT) already operational and the Monorail set to follow. Inside the city, an internal bus network connects to LRT and Monorail stops, supplemented by New Capital Cab and ride-hailing services like Uber, Careem, Indrive, and Didi. From the city centre, New Cairo is a 30-minute drive; central Cairo takes around 90 minutes. The city's lifestyle offering continues to expand, from hospitality like St. Regis Almasa New Capital to wellness, leisure, and retail spaces. Public services, including hospitals and municipal facilities, are being integrated alongside residential and commercial developments. With Phase 2 now in the master planning stage, the New Capital is positioned to scale further—adding new districts, facilities, and transport links. For Egypt, it is both a statement of intent and a long-term investment in reshaping how its cities grow. For those already living, working, and studying here, it is a place not in theory, but in practice.
