Beyond the on-field work and the medicals that take place over the course of the week, the Combine presents a great opportunity for teams to meet one-on-one with players providing them an opportunity to get to know them briefly and dive into some football questions.
To a degree, all of these meetings should be taken with some grain of salt. Teams will meet with dozens of prospects throughout the week and this is just one small part of the entire evaluation process. But with that said, these meetings aren't nothing either and are at least noteworthy.

Wagaman drives fall short as do the Marlins in a 7-4 loss to the Cardinals
Eric Wagaman launched the fourth pitch he saw Tuesday night into right field, and for a few seconds, it appeared he might have homered for the third consecutive game. It wound up only being a long fly out, gloved at the edge of the warning track. His next time up, he lined out deep to left. Two big swings by the Marlins first baseman, who's found recent success at the plate after some struggles. That's been one of the few positives for the Marlins, who fell 7-4 to the Cardinals on Tuesday for their 12th loss in 16 games. It also marked their fifth straight series loss. Wagaman entered Tuesday's game with five hits in his last 11 at-bats, a stretch that included two home runs, a triple and three RBI. 'I think it's in a good spot,' he said of his swing. 'I feel like most of this year it's just been a constant search for it, like having it for short spurts and then losing it again. But hopefully it's in a good spot, and we can keep up the consistency.' Wagaman said he was 'lunging forward' on his swings and as a result, 'everything was getting sped up because I was going towards the ball.' He worked on remaining centered in the batter's box and eventually started making hard contact on balls hit in the air. That helped him avoid getting too frustrated when he wasn't getting hits, he said. 'It's easier to have that confidence when you do make loud outs, for sure,' Wagaman said. 'You're not going to hit everything perfect. But when it's just at-bat after at-bat of mishits after mishits, that's when it gets really frustrating. Because I know I'm capable of hitting the ball hard consistently.' Wagaman couldn't come through in the sixth, however. He struck out swinging with runners on first and second and two outs and the Cardinals leading 6-4. Otto Lopez had cut the deficit in half with a two-run single to center two batters earlier. The Cardinals battered Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, who lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up six earned runs and a career-high 11 hits. 'My secondary pitches, curveball and slider, were not landing in the strike zone,' Cabrera said via team interpreter Luis Dorante Jr. 'It made me throw more fastballs and sinkers and they were taking advantage of that.' Said McCullough: 'I give Cabby a lot of credit…to buckle down and try to give us as many outs as he could in a game where he certainly didn't have what is his typical control and command of his secondaries.' Right-hander Cal Quantrill was placed on outright waivers Tuesday. He will be owed the remainder of his $3.5 million salary. Quantrill had a 5.50 ERA in 24 starts this season, including an 11.25 ERA in three starts this month. Left-hander Cade Gibson was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville — he allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings Tuesday — after right-hander Anthony Bender was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 18) with right tibial stress reaction. McCullough said Bender won't return this season. 'The shin has been bothering him for six weeks or more,' McCullough said. 'We're going to miss Anthony. He really put together a fantastic season.' Maximo Acosta, who debuted at second base Monday, started Tuesday at third — his first time playing the position. 'He moved well,' McCullough said. 'For someone to get out and handle some chances like he did speaks to his overall defensive ability and the athleticism he has and why we like him so much as someone who can handle a multitude of positions.'

3 takeaways from Day 17 of Jaguars' training camp: Injury updates and OL competition
Let's take a look at the three big takeaways from Day 17 of Jacksonville Jaguars' training camp. The Jacksonville Jaguars were back on the practice field on Tuesday as they enter their final week of the preseason. With a joint practice against the Dolphins on the horizon, Tuesday's practice was a bit lighter, but nonetheless, we have our three takeaways from what took place. New Jaguars' DT Khalen Saunders takes the practice field Just a few days after the news broke that the Jaguars were trading for Khalen Saunders, he was on the practice field on Tuesday and was wearing No. 68. Saunders is an experienced player, having appeared in 68 regular-season games while making 32 starts. He's also played in some big games, winning two Super Bowls in Kansas City. The addition of Saunders boosts the depth of the defensive tackle position and provides another run-stuffing presence. Saunders could fill a rotational role behind DaVon Hamilton. "A guy that we played against twice last year in Tampa that I've got respect for as a vet that's played a lot of meaningful downs in this league," Coen said. "Has won Super Bowls. Has been on teams that know how to win, and also, there's no question that he can help us in the middle, there at times. He's hard to double-team and move in there at times and also has some ability to redirect and has some initial quick. I do believe that he will help add some meaningful competition and depth in that room." Injury updates After practice, Liam Coen provided several injury updates. Both Travis Hunter and Tyson Campbell were practicing in some capacity on Tuesday. According to John Shipley of Jaguars on SI, Hunter went through stretch and then individual drills with the defensive backs. He also participated in the walkthrough portion but was not a part of the 7-on-7s or full-speed sessions. Coen called both Hunter and Campbell day-to-day. Back at practice, going through team drills were Arik Armstead, Maason Smith, Anton Harrison, and Chuma Edoga. Not participating was Wyatt Milum, who Coen said was week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Caleb Ransaw remains week-to-week as well. Competition at right guard As Coen said recently, there is competition taking place across the offensive line, but at right guard in particular is where things seem to be heating up. According to Mia O'Brien, Chuma Edoga and Patrick Mekari were rotating reps at that position. While it has been presumed that Mekari would step into that role, Edoga impressed early on in training camp while Mekari was sidelined. On the most recent unofficial depth chart, the starting right guard role was written as Mekari or Edgoa. Whoever doesn't win the job could end up as the Jaguars' starting right tackle over Anton Harrison. Both Edoga and Mekari have tackle experience at the NFL level.

Nose tackle Khalen Saunders feels almost instantaneous joy following trade to Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Khalen Saunders was playing Fortnite with friends at home Sunday evening when New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore called to deliver the trade news. 'Where to?' Saunders replied. Jacksonville. 'The (team) we just played?' Saunders added. 'It was a surprise.' The postgame deal sent Saunders, a two-time Super Bowl champion nose tackle with Kansas City, to the Jaguars in exchange for backup center Luke Fortner. The trade had been in the works for days, long before the teams played to a 17-all tie in the Superdome on Sunday. Jacksonville had been looking to strengthen its defensive front while New Orleans was in the market for offensive line depth. Now both players are getting a fresh start with a much better chance of making an opening-day roster. 'It was almost instantaneous the joy that came in,' Saunders said. 'It's fast moving, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.' Saunders was one of three defensive additions for the Jaguars on Tuesday. Defensive tackles Arik Armstead (back) and Maason Smith (calf) practiced with the team for the first time since training camp opened. 'Both guys have done everything they can in order to get on the grass,' Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. 'To see them out there is a great sign. … Both guys have done nothing but worked their tails off to get back. Pleased about that progress for sure.' Armstead, Smith and Saunders are expected to play in Jacksonville's preseason finale at Miami on Saturday, although it likely hinges on how much work they get during a joint practice with the Dolphins on Thursday. Coen already has a good feeling about what to expect from the 324-pound run-stopper, having watched Saunders twice last season while he was offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay. 'A guy that … I've got respect for as a vet that's played a lot of meaningful down in this league, has won Super Bowls, has been on teams that know how to win and there's no question he can help up in the middle there at times,' Coen said. 'He's hard to double-team and move in there at times and also has some ability to kind of redirect and has some initial (quickness), so I do believe he'll help add some meaningful competition and depth in that room.' Saunders started 27 games for the Saints over the last two seasons after a four-year stint in Kansas City. He became expendable after the Saints switched to a 3-4 defense under coordinator Brandon Staley and signed free agent Davon Godchaux from New England. Fortner, a third-round draft pick from Kentucky in 2022, started 34 games for Jacksonville during his first two seasons. But he was benched in favor of veteran Mitch Morse last year and was considered a long shot to make Jacksonville's roster behind Robert Hainsey and rookie Jonah Monheim. Saunders, a third-round draft pick in 2019, has 181 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks in 68 career games. He's expected to slot in as a backup to DaVon Hamilton on Jacksonville's depth chart. Saunders arrived in town midday Monday, meet his new teammates and then spent several hours with coaches learning the defense.
