Women cops showcase UP model of responsive policing, Mission Shakti

Lucknow: A seven-member delegation of
women police officers
from Uttar Pradesh showcased the state's flagship
Mission Shakti
Scheme as a model for proactive and responsive policing for
women's safety and empowerment
, during the 11th National Conference on Women in Police, held in Chennai on May 14-15.
Organised by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Police, the conference served as a national platform for sharing ideas on empowering women in policing.
Led by ADG, Women & Child Safety Organisation (WCSO), Padmaja Chauhan, the delegation included Vrinda Shukla (SP WCSO/1090), Anukriti Sharma (ASP, Sambhal) and other officers.
Themes of the conference included recruitment and training, gender-sensitive uniforms, career progression, work-life balance, mental health and welfare, and best practices in anti-human trafficking initiatives.
SP Vrinda Shukla spoke on 'Ideas and vision on empowerment of women', putting spotlight on UP's Mission Shakti as a comprehensive model of
women-centric policing
.
She discussed initiatives like women help desks, beat system, time-bound investigation protocols monitored via ITSSO portal, and rise in conviction rates in crimes against women. She attributed this success to institutional reforms and the political will of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
ADG Padmaja Chauhan was also among 14 police personnel honoured nationally for exceptional contributions. She was felicitated for expanding the mandate of women beat constables in Phase V of Mission Shakti. This included targeted drives against acid sale, obscene content, illegal spas, and inspection of women's shelter homes, along with tracking of repeat offenders. Intelligence gathered through these operations led to hundreds of FIRs and preventive actions across the state.
Uttar Pradesh also earned distinction at the conference for having the highest number of women police personnel in the country, followed by host state Tamil Nadu. The event was inaugurated by Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai and concluded with remarks from Tamil Nadu deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Shriya noted that helpline not only counsels victims but also provides psychological counselling to accused individuals to prevent repeat offences. Pilgaonkar, who plays a police officer in her upcoming crime series Chhal Kapat, said her visit aimed to promote awareness around women's safety. "Security doesn't come from fear alone—it comes from understanding, awareness, and technology," she said. She said safe society could be built only when citizens were informed and proactive. "When women speak up and society listens with empathy, real change happens," she added. WCSO ADG Padmaja Chauhan presented Shriya with awareness material and token of appreciation.

BHUBANESWAR: The 'Lakhpati Didi' mission under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aimed at empowering women financially and instilling leadership qualities in rural women, said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday. Addressing the National Lakhpati Didi Conference 2025 at Lok Seva Bhawan here, the chief minister said it is not just a celebration of the achievements of the government but a testament to its commitment to women's leadership. 'The strength and determination of women shape the future of families and the nation,' he added. Stating that the Lakhpati Didi Yojana is not just a welfare scheme but a strategy for inclusive and sustainable development, Majhi said the prime minister has taken several steps to ensure political, social and economic empowerment of women. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which provides 33 per cent reservation of seats for women in the Parliament and state legislatures, is a significant step towards increasing women's representation in politics, the chief minister said. 'We have implemented the Lakhpati Didi mission with dedication. With nearly 17 lakh women being empowered as Lakhpati Didis, Odisha has secured the top position in India. This success is a result of the dedication of our women members of the self-help groups, the Mission Shakti team and the Odisha Livelihood Mission's tireless efforts and efficient work at the grassroots-level,' he added. Majhi further said that all women SHG members in the state have access to interest-free loans of up to `10 lakh. The revolving fund assistance has been increased from `15,000 to `30,000 and the community investment fund has been enhanced from `35 lakh to `60 lakh. 'This has enabled SHG members to confidently grow their businesses and livelihoods,' he added.

NEW DELHI: Home minister on Friday reviewed the status of implementation of the new criminal laws in with chief minister , stressing that the 100% rollout of their provisions at the ground level is necessary to ensure civil rights. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Shah, in his address at the review meeting, said the three new criminal laws enacted under the Narendra Modi regime 'are meant to reflect the spirit of the Indian Constitution'. He said that civil rights will not be strengthened merely by the enactment of new criminal laws, but must be fully implemented on the ground at the earliest possible. For this, he said, the use of technology and continuous monitoring is essential. The meeting — attended by home secretary, Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and DGP and the chiefs of Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPRD) and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) — reviewed the present status of new provisions in the BNS, BNSS and BSA, related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution and forensics. The home minister asked Andhra Pradesh to review the status of implementation of new criminal laws in a pin-pointed format so that they can be rolled out expeditiously. He said that it is important to push for timelines for filing charge sheets and framing of charges within the timeframe of 60 and 90 days respectively. Shah suggested that Naidu review the implementation of new criminal laws in the state once a month, the chief secretary every fortnight and the home secretary and DGP, once a week. Naidu thanked Shah for the efforts being made by the Union home ministry to bring about a sea change in the Indian criminal justice system.
