Match report: Watford 1-2 Norwich City

Yahoo5 days ago
A very poor first-half performance cost Watford as they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Norwich City.
Josh Sargent took advantage after a Ryan Andrews error to open the scoring, before Egil Selvik let a Marcelino Nunez shot through his hands to leave the Hornets two down at the break.
Kwadwo Baah's introduction off the bench livened things up in the second period, and the winger pulled a goal back after dribbling into the box and firing low into the corner.
But Norwich held on to secure what was a deserved win - with Paulo Pezzolano left to ponder where it all went wrong during the opening 45 minutes.
Nestory Irankunda was the first to go close for Watford, producing a stepover and low show that was shovelled behind by Daniel Grimshaw.
On 10 minutes, however, Norwich took the lead.

Andrews miscontrolled after a Selvik clearance and Watford summer transfer target Pape Diallo pounced, squaring to Sargent to score on his fourth straight visit to Vicarage Road.
From there, it was one-way traffic as Watford's performance fell apart.
The Hornets gave the ball away frequently and the visitors seized on it, initially being denied by a Hector Kyprianou interception as Sargent ran onto a through ball.
They did double their lead on 24 minutes, though, when Nunez's long shot squirmed through Selvik's hands and bounced into the net.
Nunez went close again when Watford gave the ball away on the edge of their own box once more five minutes later, before the lively Diallo drilled into the side netting.
Paulo Pezzolano looked furious and it was not a surprise when Watford were booed off at the break.
The Hornets stepped things up a little in the second half, Louza driving wide and Irankunda continuing to cause mischief, though it was Sargent who went closest again when driving wide from 20 yards.
As became customary last season, though, Kwadwo Baah's introduction off the bench changed the dynamic.
Just seven minutes after coming on down the left, the winger powered into the box and drilled below Grimshaw to get his side back into the game.
Watford had found a rhythm, Irankunda's 20-yarder not too far away after Ngakia had won a corner.
Another corner led to their next opportunity, Vivaldo Semedo heading a decent Louza delivery over the top.
Pezzolano's side were unable to apply enough pressure to Norwich's goal in the end, though, and lose their second consecutive match at the start of the season.
Watford: Selvik; Andrews (Ngakia, 46), Alleyne, Kyprianou, Bola; Grieves (Keben, 46), Dele-Bashiru (Louza, 46); Ince (Baah, 61), Kayembe, Irankunda, Semedo (Kjerrumgaard, 80)
Unused subs: Baxter, Mullins, Sissoko, Doumbia
Attendance: 9,243

Rasmus Hojlund set for omission from Manchester United matchday squad vs Arsenal

Rasmus Hojlund is set to be left out Manchester United's matchday squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal after being told he faces a challenge to get minutes under Ruben Amorim. Hojlund faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford following the signing of fellow striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7million. Advertisement The 22-year-old has attracted interest from a range of clubs, including AC Milan and RB Leipzig, but has so far remained adamant that he wishes to stay and fight for his place. He is maintaining commitment and professionalism during this time. Hojlund was an unused substitute in United's final pre-season friendly last weekend against Fiorentina. When asked whether Hojlund was still part of his plans at a pre-match press conference on Friday, United head coach Amorim was non-committal. 'He's one more option, we will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player,' Amorim said. Amorim also confirmed Joshua Zirkzee, who has been working his way back to fitness in pre-season, is now ready to return. United's preference is a permanent sale for Hojlund, although there is an acceptance that they will likely have to accept an amount lower than his book value of around £45m. United are also open to a loan arrangement. It remains to be seen whether Hojlund's plans change after he insisted that he would stay and compete to win his place back if a new striker was to join. 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,' he said on United's pre-season tour of the United States. 'Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp so I'm welcoming everything that comes.' Hojlund joined United in an initial €75m deal in 2023, with a further €10m in add-ons, and has since scored 26 goals in 95 appearances. The Denmark international only scored ten goals in all competitions last season, including just four in the Premier League, and endured a a 21-match goalless streak between mid-December and mid-March. The field goal was set up by an incredible catch by KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a 37-yard pass from Trey Lance. Q3 15:00 - Giants 7, Jets 6 The second half is underway. The Giants have the ball and Jaxson Dart is under center. Imagn Images HT - Buccaneers 14, Steelers 7 No scoring in the second quarter following three total touchdowns in the first. Teddy Bridgewater threw a pair of scores to Bucky Irving and Emeka Egbuka before Mason Rudolph responded with one of his own to Brandon Johnson. Kyle Trask and Skylar Thompson have since taken over at quarterback for both teams. Trey Lance is in at QB for the Chargers while Taylor Heinicke is getting looked at on the sideline. Imagn Images Q2 4:02 - Ravens 15, Cowboys 7 Tyler Loop is proving to be a good weapon for the Ravens. The rookie makes a 51-yard field goal. The Ravens have 196 yards of offense, the Cowboys just 32. Halftime - Giants 7, Jets 6 Nice drive here by Aiden Martinez and the Jets to end the half, spanning 82 yards on 14 plays. Nick Folk caps it with a 31-yard field goal. The Giants will start the second half with the football. Q2 6:20 - Buccaneers 14, Steelers 7 Kindle Vildor tips the ball to himself and then picks off Skylar Thompson, returning the ball 36 yards to near midfield. Q2 4:01 - Rams 7, Chargers 6 The Rams have first-and-goal from the Chargers' 3-yard line but can't manage to punch it in. Jarquez Hunter is stuffed for no gain on first and third down, and Stetson Bennett is unable to connect with an open receiver on second and fourth down. Tony Jefferson made the key pass breakup on fourth down. Q2 4:27 - Giants 7, Jets 3 Jaxson Dart attempts to scramble on third-and-7 but Kingsley Jonathan swipes at his feet and brings him down. Dallas is stuck on minus-5. Q2 5:56 - Giants 7, Jets 3 Three straight incompletions for Aiden Martinez as the Jets go three-and-out. Two targets for rookie Arian Smith, one drop and one contested catch he could not pull in. Q2 6:30 - Giants 7, Jets 3 Russell Wilson giveth and Russell Wilson taketh away. He loads up another deep ball but clearly he was not on the same page as Beaux Collins. Wilson's pass is easily intercepted by Qwan'tez Stiggers, who got beat earlier on Collins' 80-yard reception. Jaxson Dart was in with starting offense for one play and then Russell Wilson comes back in for the Giants. The rookie found Theo Johnson for a nice gain on a screen. Getty Images Q2 8:38 - Giants 7, Jets 3 The Jets, with Adrian Martinez at quarterback, quickly went three-and-out. The Giants have the ball again and their starters are still in the game. Tyrone Tracy Jr. starts the possession with a nice run to move the chains. This is interesting. The Giants have removed all of their defensive starters ... but Bobby Okereke is back in at LB.
