Extreme winds damage roof of Phil Gainer Community Center

ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) — High winds and heavy rain battered West Virginia on Sunday causing damage to several structures across the state, including the Phil Gainer Community Center in Elkins.
On March 16, Elkins' City Operations Manager Mike Kesecker said that he received a call that afternoon informing him of roof damage to the Phil Gainer Community Center (PGCC); the roof of the center's gymnasium had been peeled back by the wind.
'It's a rubber membrane roof, it had been peeled back and damage had been done,' said Kesecker. 'Because the roof had been peeled back, it also allowed for some leaking to occur inside the gymnasium of the building.'
Upon noticing this damage, Kesecker stated that they reached out to personnel to help get the membrane rolled back onto the roof and temporarily tacked down as soon as possible to prevent any more water from getting into the building.
Kesecker said they also worked to clean up debris around the building to make sure that nothing would blow out into the streets. The City of Elkins also temporarily closed down the road below the Phil Gainer Center for traffic, to ensure that everything was cleaned up.
Once the city was able to confirm that everything was picked up and safe, they opened the road back up to traffic on Monday morning. The City of Elkins has already submitted a claim to its insurance company and is now waiting to hear back.
Kesecker told 12 News that the classroom and office spaces at the PGCC are still available for public use. However, use of the gymnasium until the PGCC knows that the temporary work done on the roof will hold until permanent repairs can be made.
'The Phil Gainer Center is a vital part of the community here in Elkins,' Kesecker said. 'The city owns the building, [Elkins Parks & Recreation] operates it for use and it's used for multiple events.'
'It's a key part to the community and it's really a shame that this happened,' he added. 'We're gonna try to get it fixed as quickly as possible so we don't have to delay and cancel a lot of events there and move them to a different location.'
Strong storm responsible for structure damage across WV
Kesecker said that hopefully the delay will be minimal and repairing the gym will be a priority to avoid any impact on the upcoming Mountain State Forest Festival.
At this time, the City of Elkins does not have a projected timeline for when the PGCC's gymnasium will be reopened for public use. However, Kesecker said that they plan to start the repair process soon after hearing back from the city's insurance.
No other city property sustained significant damage during Sunday's storms according to Kesecker. You can view official updates from the City of Elkins here.

Fairmont cuts the ribbon on new pickleball courts

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — Marion County residents now have a new way to have fun after the City of Fairmont cut the ribbon Friday for its new pickleball court at Windmill Park. The courts were previously used as basketball courts, which the city converted for $120,000. City officials said they're trying to provide opportunities to keep the community active and get in on the latest sports trends, all while keeping people in Fairmont. Look out for 'Skittles of the bird world' in West Virginia this summer According to 2024 was the fourth year in a row that pickleball was the fastest-growing sport in America. After the ribbon-cutting for the Pickleball Courts, Fairmont Mayor Anne Bolyard tried them out. If you want to get a game in yourself, the gate will be open. The Pickleball Courts are a part of a broader city effort to invest in parks and recreation. City officials said that by the end of the fiscal year, the city will have made $3 million worth of upgrades to its municipal park facilities. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. All of West Virginia under Air Quality Alert Thursday

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Smoke from wildfires in Canada prompted an Air Quality Alert across West Virginia Thursday. The alert was issued by the National Weather Service early Thursday afternoon and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. As of 2:30 p.m., most of West Virginia and most of the Northeast had moderate air quality conditions, which can impact unusually sensitive groups. According to the alert, some areas of West Virginia may experience a period where air quality dips down to the 'orange' level, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. No surrounding states have similar alerts. 'Explosion' reported during fire at Hamer Pellet plant in Elkins Parts of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin were experiencing unhealthy air quality conditions, but only some parts of Canada were seeing air quality in the very unhealthy or hazardous range because of the smoke. The biggest impact West Virginia has seen from the smoke this week is a haze that has lingered across the Mountain State for a few days. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Will Canadian wildfire smoke spread to West Virginia?

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Over the past few days, smoke from multiple wildfires in Canada has headed south, crossing into parts of the U.S. But will the haze make it all the way down to the Mountain State? Turns out, it already has. According to FireSmoke Canada, a website that broadcasts results from the Weather Forecast Research Team at the University of British Columbia, smoke from the wildfires in the upper part of Canada was officially in West Virginia as of Monday morning, albeit at low levels. Weather Service rehiring at offices left 'critically understaffed' by layoffs However, things are not expected to improve as we head into Tuesday. According to the forecast from Monday evening, the cloud of lower-level smoke is set to hover over West Virginia through Tuesday. On top of that, a more concentrated cloud is set to make its way north through West Virginia as the day goes on, with the most concentrated parts potentially reaching 60 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter, nearly double the national standard over a 24-hour period, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Levels during this time won't be hazardous to most people. According to the New York Department of Health, levels 51–100 have the potential to affect people with pre-existing conditions that make them sensitive to air quality, but everyone else should be unaffected. The StormTracker 12 team also said West Virginians may be able to see the smoke during sunset on Tuesday and sunrise on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
