Nine militants killed, three officers wounded in security operation in northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR: A joint operation by police and security forces killed nine militants in Hangu district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, police said, after a fierce gunbattle that left three senior officials, including the district police chief and a military officer, wounded.
The operation, launched around 1 PM based on actionable intelligence about militant presence in the area, resulted in a two-hour-long firefight before the area was cleared, according to police.
Hangu has long experienced sectarian and militant unrest, including deadly suicide bombings targeting civilian areas and mosques, and Saturday's raid marked the latest in a series of operations aimed at curbing militant violence in the province.
Hangu police spokesperson Saqib Khan told Arab News reinforcements were quickly deployed to support frontline units and block any escape routes.
'During the intense exchange of fire, DPO [District Police Officer] Khalid Khan, a police inspector Nabi Khan and a senior military official sustained injuries,' he said. 'Fortunately, all three are out of danger and receiving proper medical care.'
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zulfiqar Hameed commended the bravery of the officers and said he had spoken to the injured district police chief.
'He is in high spirits and recovering well,' the IGP noted in a statement.
Following the operation, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur paid tribute to the DPO and his team for their 'exemplary courage and bravery.'
'DPO Khalid Khan and his team thwarted the nefarious designs of the terrorists with exceptional valor and determination,' a statement quoted Gandapur as saying.
He directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured personnel.
'DPO Khalid Khan led from the front and confronted the terrorists head-on, displaying remarkable bravery,' he added. 'We are proud of such fearless and courageous police officers and personnel.'
Gandapur reaffirmed the entire nation stood firmly behind its security forces in the fight against militant violence.

Pakistani Islamist militants use drones to target security forces, officials say

ISLAMABAD: Islamist militants in Pakistan have started using commercially acquired quadcopter drones to drop bombs on security forces in the country's northwest, police said, a potentially dangerous development in the volatile region. The use of such drones, which are powered by four rotors allowing for vertical take-off and landing, is worrying the overstretched and under-equipped police force, the frontline against militant attacks, officials said. Two quadcopters sent by the militants targeted a police station earlier this month, killing a woman and injuring three children in a nearby house in Bannu district, said police officer Muhammad Anwar. A drone spotted over another police station on Saturday was shot down with assault rifles, he said. It was armed with a mortar shell, he said. At least eight such drone attacks have targeted police and security forces in Bannu and adjacent areas in the last two and a half months, he said. Regional police chief Sajjad Khan said militants were still trying to master the use of the drones. 'The militants have acquired these modern tools, but they are in the process of experimentation and that's why they can't hit their targets accurately,' he added. The militants are using the quadcopters to drop improvised explosive devices or mortar shells on their targets, five security officials said. They said these explosive devices were packed with ball bearings or pieces of iron. Provincial police chief Zulfiqar Hameed said the police lacked resources to meet the new challenge. 'We do not have equipment to counter the drones,' he told the local Geo News channel on Sunday. 'The militants are better equipped than we are,' he said. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the drone strikes. The main militant group operating in the northwest is the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban. But they denied using the drones. 'We are trying to acquire this technology,' a TTP spokesman told Reuters. In 2024, Islamist militants carried out 335 countrywide attacks, killing 520 people, according to the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, an independent organization. In recent weeks, thousands of residents from the border region have staged protests, aimed against both the attacks by militants and what they fear is an offensive planned by the army, according to a statement issued by the demonstrators. They said they feared that a military operation against the militants would displace them from their homes. A sweeping operation against militants in 2014 was preceded by a forced evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents. They spent months, and in many cases years, away from their homes. Pakistan's army did not respond to a request for comment on whether an operation was planned.

Eight Pakistan paramilitary troops, four militants killed in clashes in northwest

At least eight Pakistani paramilitary troops and four militants were killed in a clash in the country's northwest, senior local officials said Monday, in the latest violence to hit the restive region. 'Armed terrorists attacked a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy with heavy weapons... The fighting continued for several hours,' a senior local security official told AFP. 'Eight FC personnel were killed, and 11 were injured,' he said. Three injured soldiers are in critical condition, while the clash also killed four militants, he added. A senior administration official in the area confirmed the details to AFP. The clash, which lasted for several hours, took place in Daburi, Orakzai district, near the Afghan border. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in violence in its regions bordering Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad accuses its western neighbor of allowing its soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan -- a claim the Taliban denies. More than 320 people, mostly security personnel, have been killed in attacks since the start of the year by armed groups fighting in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to an AFP tally.

Five killed, seven injured in deadly tribal clash in southwestern Pakistan

QUETTA: Five people were killed while seven others were injured in Pakistan's southwestern Killa Abdullah district on Sunday after an armed clash between two tribes, a senior official said. The clash broke out on Sunday evening between members of the ethnic Pashtun tribes of Achakzai and Kakar, lasting for several hours before tribal elders, the paramilitary Levies force and Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan brokered a ceasefire between them. 'Five people have been killed and seven injured in the latest clashes that erupted between Achakzai and Kakar tribesmen in Killa Abdullah district,' Shahzaib Kakar, commissioner of Quetta Division, told Arab News on Sunday. He said members of both tribes were involved in 'an old tribal dispute,' adding that both sides agreed to a ceasefire after security forces arrived in the area. Hayat Achakzai, a local journalist based in Killa Abdullah district, said clashes broke out at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when members of both tribes came face to face at the district's Tot Adda area. 'Both tribes were engaged in a dispute since March 2025 following a motorbike snatching,' Achakzai said. 'They were chasing each other for the last two weeks but today met with an armed clash.' Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province by land mass but its most backward one by almost all social and economic indicators, has a strong tribal system with powerful chieftains. Disputes between rival tribes over honor, land and decades-old feuds are common here, often resulting in armed clashes. Ethnic Baloch militant groups have launched a low-level insurgency against the state for years in Balochistan, accusing Islamabad of exploiting the province's mineral resources and denying locals a share in it. The government denies the allegations and points to health, development and educational projects that it says have been launched to empower the people of Balochistan.
