Lexus Reveals Stunning All-New 2026 ES In Two Electrified Flavors

Yahoo24-04-2025
Since its introduction in 1989, with the brand's inception, the Lexus ES has played second fiddle as a smaller, lower-priced option to the flagship LS sedan. But while enthusiasts and historians revered its bigger brother as a true disruptor that forced elitist luxury car giants like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Cadillac to go back to the drawing board, the early iterations of the ES did not initially receive such praise, largely owing to its Camry roots.
However, as time progressed and the Lexus brand evolved to include more models positioned above and below the ES's price point, like the GS and IS sedans, the ES has stood the test of time as a true best-seller. Lexus sells mostly SUVs and crossovers these days, but according to Toyota Motor North America U.S. sales data, the humble ES sedan was Lexus's best-selling non-SUV in 2024 and 2023, selling more than double the amount of the IS sold last year.
However, the current ES has been on the market for more than six years, and its upgrade is poised to take on the all-electric theater.

On April 23, Lexus unveiled the new 2026 ES sedan at Auto Shanghai, which features a bolder, edgier design than the model currently on display in Lexus showrooms. Drawing inspiration from the LF-ZL concept that was shown off back in October 2023, the new ES rewrites and abandons some of the signature styling cues that buyers have come to know Lexus by.
Gone is the oversized "vacuum-looking" grille up on the front bumper, and in its place is a nose that looks very similar to the front of Toyota's fully-electric bZ4x SUV. The rest of the exterior is visually stunning, as Lexus designers gave the ES a very modern refresh that incorporates much of the brand's current design language, including an RZ-style rear light bar with spelled-out "LEXUS" lettering.

Numbers-wise, it is physically bigger than the 2025 ES, growing 6.5 inches longer to a total length of 202.3 inches, much of which is due to its extended wheelbase of 116.1 inches, 3.1 inches longer than the outgoing model. It is also 2.1 inches wider at 75.6 inches across, and 4.3 inches taller at 61.2 inches tall.
The new ES has a sculpted profile that appears edgier and more modern than the outgoing model. One of the most prominent design cues on the 2026 ES is the use of a gloss-black bodyside trim piece that extends across the doors to mimic the appearance of a duct or vent. This little cue helps carve out a much sportier appearance to an otherwise "soft" sedan.

Polarizing, modernist changes are also present in the interior, and unfortunately, that means that Lexus has also jumped onto the Tesla-esque, touch-screen-centric, minimalist bandwagon. From the pictures, it seems that Lexus has ditched traditional buttons for a simplified layout featuring important shortcuts.
Screens are the most prominent items on the dashboard. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is positioned behind the steering wheel in front of the driver, while a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen occupies the real estate smack dab in the middle of the two passengers. In the photos provided by Lexus's global site, we see the existence of a second, similarly sized passenger-side screen, which may be offered as an optional feature akin to that of Mercedes-Benz's superscreen.

But like the exterior, the rest of the interior is given a modern refresh with some potentially polarizing design choices sprinkled in. The steering wheel, for instance, is oddly devoid of traditional Lexus branding, as it now features embossed "LEXUS" lettering spelled out in the same place where a Lexus badge would be. Additionally, the traditional gear lever on the current ES has been replaced with a smaller "nub" akin to Toyota's hybrid models.
However, the ES does gain some cool features, including a panoramic glass roof that can dim to control the amount of sun in the cabin. Lexus says the new ES will introduce the Executive Package for the first time in North America, which offers some comfort and bliss for backseat lurkers. This package includes reclining rear seats with a passenger-side ottoman as well as massaging, heating, and ventilation functions.
Although EVs and electrification are the status quo for today's emissions-sensitive auto industry, Lexus is not leaving gasoline loyalists in the dust with its new ES. Lexus says that the new ES is built on a new, redesigned platform that is "developed specifically to accommodate both HEV and BEV powertrains," while being able to reduce body vibrations and "enable sharp, intuitive steering, along with smooth acceleration and deceleration."
For the United States market, Lexus will exclusively offer petrol-drinkers the ES 350h with a choice between a front-wheel or all-wheel-drive drivetrain, and a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine powering the hybrid system. It features what Lexus calls an "integrated eAxle," combining the power control unit and transaxle for maximum battery output and an overall lighter and smaller powerplant footprint.

However, the biggest distinction of the new ES is the offering of two EV models: the front-drive ES 350e and the all-wheel-drive ES 500h. Both models are powered by a large-capacity battery beneath the floor, which the manufacturer says lowers the center of gravity and enhances driving stability.
Lexus also reports that the 350e model's single motor produces 221 horsepower, which is good for an 8.9-second 0-60 mph time, and a maximum range of 300 miles when equipped with 19-inch wheels. The 500e model's dual motors, however, provide 338 horsepower and a 5.9-second 0-60 mph time. Lexus has not released any pricing information, but Lexus says that "the 2026 ES will go on sale next year."
If there is one thing that I am a bit embarrassed to admit, it's that I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Lexus ES, specifically the 1992 to 1996 iteration and the version sold from 1997 to 2001. A close friend's parents used to own a 1996 model in white, and I used to think it was distinctly modern despite being a car from the 1990s that was initially designed in the late 1980s.
Lexus isn't entirely unique in offering the ES in both gas-powered and electric variants; Mercedes ruffled some feathers by offering the new CLA in the same way. However, it is interesting that Lexus decided to make the brave decision not to introduce an electric sedan as a wholly separate model, as it did with the RZ when it was introduced back in 2023. It's a different world now, and the attitude towards EVs has evolved over time.

Even though Lexus will also offer the ES as an EV, I would personally keep things simple and stick with the gas-hybrid ES 350h. Toyota's hybrid system is one of the most robust in the business, and the simplicity of filling up with gas would make it a smoother experience if I ever lend it to my friends or family.
I am personally a fan of the new "Sonic Copper" color they developed for this car, but as a self-admitted boring guy, I'd keep the outside in black and have the interior in the cool, green-looking "Aotake." Depending on how much the Executive Package would cost, I'd opt for that too.

Mercedes-Benz May Adopt BMW Engines to Cut Costs. No, Really

The latest car news, reviews, and features. We've been hearing from industry executives and analysts alike that consolidation and partnerships between legacy brands are the only way forward to keep up with changing global regulations and the ascent of China's auto sector. If you had any doubt, consider this report out of Germany that Mercedes-Benz is in negotiations with BMW to adopt its four-cylinder engines across a range of models. As reported first by Manager Magazin and corroborated by Autocar citing a Mercedes source, the three-pointed-star brand is in 'advanced talks' with its foremost rival to incorporate BMW mills in most of its smaller models. That would include the CLA, GLA, GLB, C-Class, and upcoming 'Little G' off-roader, up to the E-Class. Autocar says that the move was described to it as a 'strategic step to cut development costs.' Now, if you're closely following Mercedes' engine development as of late, you may already know that the company recently developed a four-cylinder of its own—a new 1.5-liter product that can be found in the new CLA, and will be used in a mild-hybrid capacity. However, that engine supposedly isn't engineered for plug-in hybrid use, or use as a gas range extender for EVs. The four-cylinder engine in a 2024 Mercedes E350. Adam Ismail A turbocharged derivative of BMW's two-liter B48 could fit that role well, the rationale goes. And since it's able to be fitted in longitudinal as well as transverse layouts, it's a more flexible choice for Mercedes' smaller cars. As for what this would mean on our side of the pond, Autocar's report raises the potential construction of a 'shared engine plant in the U.S. to sidestep rising import tariffs,' as a result of this partnership. That's a wild thing to imagine—a joint BMW and Mercedes engine plant anywhere in the world, let alone North America—but, you know what they say about desperate times. And, many automakers like Mercedes are finding themselves in a pretty desperate one, expecting to spin down internal-combustion engine development five years ago, only to find that the all-EV world hasn't quite arrived yet. On this side of the planet, anyway. Got tips? Send 'em to tips@

1964 Cadillac DeVille Sedan For Sale With 56,435 Miles

The DeVille nameplate had already made its mark by 1964, but it was in its second generation where Cadillac's vision of full-size American elegance really hit its stride. The Sedan was big, bold, and packed with just enough forward-thinking features to keep things interesting. This example-a restored 1964 Cadillac DeVille Sedan in Silverado Blue-is an authentic expression of what personal luxury looked like in the early 1960s. With 56,435 miles on the odometer and a reported restoration, it's a clean, usable cruiser with unmistakable period character. This particular Cadillac Seville Sedan with low miles is for sale on Exotic Car Trader, and you can check out the listing by clicking here. Thinking about selling your car? Get a value estimate and list it online with Exotic Car Trader. Click here to learn more. Cadillac leaned hard into its "Standard of the World" branding, and it shows in the exterior design. Silverado Blue suits the six-window hardtop body style, playing well with the restrained fins, crisp character lines, and brushed metal accents. It's a color you don't see much today, but it fits right into the pastel-heavy palette of the time period. Chrome trim runs nearly the full length of the car, wrapping around the body sides, windows, and bumpers. The rear spats cover the back wheels for a sleeker profile, while whitewall tires and stacked headlights reinforce the Cadillac image. Those six side windows are also worth a closer look, as not every DeVille was configured like this. The thin pillars open up visibility, giving passengers a panoramic view that few modern cars can match. Even at a glance, it's clear this car was built for comfort at scale. Slide into the cabin, and you're greeted by a sea of white leather, fully redone during the reported restoration. Both front and rear bench seats are wide, plush, and built for real-world comfort. This isn't a car designed around cupholders or phone cubbies; it's about presence, space, and the feel of driving something substantial. Air conditioning, a push-button radio, and auto-dimming headlamps all reflect the DeVille's position as a luxury flagship. The controls are laid out across a sprawling dash, with a clean horizontal speedometer and chrome accents throughout. There's nothing flashy here, just thoughtful design, comfort-first ergonomics, and the kind of space that turns heads when you open the door. The DeVille's long hood houses a 390-cubic-inch V8, rebuilt within the last 500 miles. Factory ratings put output around 325 horsepower-plenty to move this 4,700-pound cruiser with ease. Cadillac paired it with a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. Performance isn't the point, but there's no question the DeVille can cruise at highway speeds all day long without strain. The throttle is soft and smooth, and shifting is slow and deliberate, just as you'd expect in a big, comfortable Cadillac. The appeal of a car like this 1964 Cadillac DeVille Sedan isn't just about nostalgia-it's about stepping into a time when space, presence, and quiet power were the norm. This one's not just a garage ornament, either. With a fresh restoration, it's ready to be used. If you're someone who appreciates vintage American design and wants a cruiser that's more than just pretty, this DeVille gets the job done. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Qualcomm primed for long-awaited driver-assistance debut with BMW at IAA Mobility showcase

Qualcomm Technologies will unveil a sophisticated driver-assistance system that has been years in the making at Munich's IAA Mobility showcase in September. The driving-policy portion of the software was codeveloped as part of a joint venture with BMW. It will debut on the automaker's Neue Klasse electric-vehicle platform and be available in 60 countries by the end of this year. Other aspects of the software stack are derived from Qualcomm's acquisition of Veoneer's 'Arriver' software in 2022. Ever since, Qualcomm has anticipated the moment when it could put the pieces together and bring them to the market with BMW. Sign up for the weekly Automotive News Mobility Report newsletter for the latest developments at the intersection of transportation and technology. 'I kind of feel like this is a graduation for us,' said Nakul Duggal, who heads Qualcomm's automotive, industrial and cloud-computing business. 'For us to have gone from a cold start to where we are with them, I think that's a big accomplishment.' Analysts say the same about Qualcomm's steady rise into prominence as an enabler of the software-defined vehicle evolution. The company has a $45 billion pipeline in automotive revenue. Its Snapdragon Digital Chassis is a scalable computing platform that supports connectivity, digital cockpit, infotainment and now driver-assistance functionality. 'Qualcomm is in an ideal position to bring that story together,' said Roger Lanctot of auto-tech advisory firm StrategiaNow Consulting. 'Now they can hopefully facilitate the transition to a connectivity-supported, connectivity-enabled autonomy proposition.' Qualcomm-BMW work exemplifies auto-tech alliance Qualcomm's first foray into the auto industry came in 2022 when it supplied modems used in General Motors' OnStar communications system. It deepened its auto connections when its silicon began underpinning digital cockpits – a natural progression from its smartphone roots. Expanding into driver-assist technology was not as straightforward. Qualcomm needed to build brand-new, dedicated silicon that meets automotive safety standards for automated driving, Duggal said. But the company is poised to reap rewards and has timed its market entry well, Lanctot said. Global car buyers are growing interested in more complex and advanced driver-assistance technology, especially in China, and automakers are seeking help building it. Qualcomm's 50-50 joint venture with BMW on the driving-policy software for automated driving employs 800 people. It signals 'how far automakers are willing to align with the tech sector to tackle emerging challenges' such as automated driving, according to a June research note from S&P Global Mobility. The driving policy is an algorithm that decides how an automated vehicle navigates its environment. Qualcomm is bringing its own algorithms — obtained in the Arriver acquisition and further honed — in the perception and active-safety portions of the system into the Neue Klasse work. In the U.S., driver-assistance technology is expected to be the second-most important differentiator for customers in the premium segment by 2035, according to an April consumer survey conducted by consulting firm McKinsey & Co. Chinese customers are already clamoring for such systems. In February, BYD outlined a plan to make its 'God's Eye' driver-assistance system standard across its lineup. There will be three variations, geared toward the entry-level, mid-market and premium segments. Qualcomm works with Chinese competitors including Leapmotor and Li Auto Inc., and the company's Snapdragon platform is intended to help automakers worldwide present similar, flexible offerings at a global scale, said Anshuman Saxena, the company's vice president of ADAS and autonomous driving. 'This is exactly the point where that scalability becomes superimportant,' he said. 'They can add the right functions at the right cost structure.' Mobileye, Applied Intuition offer global competition Qualcomm is not the only company seeking to deliver such products. Some carmakers have sought to bring such developments in-house, such as General Motors, which renewed its interest in a 'personally owned autonomous vehicle' this month. Other players include traditional tech suppliers such as Mobileye and newcomers such as Applied Intuition. The latter launched a driver-assistance product for passenger vehicles on Aug. 19 that offers features including lane keeping, intelligent parking, lane changes, urban driving and a remote parking-summon function with mass-market compute. Still, with Neue Klasse poised to launch, Lanctot regards the competition in the driver-assistance space most keenly between Qualcomm and Mobileye. Qualcomm supplanted Mobileye in its driver-assistance work with BMW, both Duggal and Lanctot said. 'Qualcomm has a more comprehensive package,' Lanctot said, 'and Qualcomm is not likely to get into the mobility business, whereas Mobileye keeps flirting with becoming a mobility provider.' Ownership of the data streaming from driving-assist systems is a key contractual battleground between automakers and tech companies, and in some sense, moving from one supplier to another is 'trading one dependency for another,' he said. But perhaps not all are equal. Qualcomm has more than 30 design wins for its driver-assist product that will launch in the next 12 months, Duggal said. The flurry of activity is 'putting tremendous pressure on our system,' he said. But after years of formulating a blueprint for entering the driver-assistance market, acquiring Arriver and implementing its strategy, he said, 'that is a good problem to have.'
