On this day in 2024: Peace Museum announces Salts Mill relocation plan
The Peace Museum, billed as the only museum of its kind in the UK, announced that it was to reopen at Salts Mill in Saltaire in August 2024, following a relocation from its former upper floor space on Piece Hall Yard, which it had occupied since 1994.
The new site, on the third floor of the historic mill, was anticipated to provide more space for exhibits and to be more accessible to visitors.
As of the time of original reporting in 2024, the Peace Museum's exhibits included a collection of banners from peace marches from across the world.
A spokesperson said at the time: "The National Lottery Heritage Fund's support, made possible by National Lottery players, has enabled the creation of a new, engaging, and accessible exhibition, and educational programmes.
"Generous capital funding from Bradford 2025 and Bradford City Council has allowed us to turn an unused piece of the district's history back into life.
"We would also like to thank Key Fund, Art Fund, Association of Independent Museums, Pilgrim Trust, Museum Development North, and Arts Council England, who have all helped to make our move and reopening possible.
"The Peace Museum's reopening is just the beginning of what will be an exciting and ambitious next chapter."

Fire at industrial estate sparks huge 999 response as black smoke pours from building
A large industrial estate blaze has sparked a huge 999 response this afternoon. Police and multiple fire engines remain on Usworth Road in Hartlepool this afternoon (August 4) after a blaze broke out just before 3pm. According to residents, the surrounding area has been blocked off by 999 crews as plumes of black smoke continue to pour into the air. The fire which has broke out in Hartlepool. A community has been left devastated after a historic Cumbernauld church was destroyed by fire. Flames engulfed the B-listed St Mungo's Trinity Parish Church on Saturday night, prompting an emergency response. The congregational roll is around 350 members. Rev Alastair Duncan, interim moderator of Cumbernauld Trinity Church, said: 'The congregation is devastated by the sudden loss of its building by fire on Saturday evening. 'St Mungo's, with its iconic pyramid-shaped roof, stands at the heart of Cumbernauld town centre, and is and has been an important landmark since it was built in the 1960s, designed by notable Scottish architect Alan Reiach. 'But aside from its distinctive architecture, the B-listed building is held in great affection by the people of Cumbernauld and its location remains a significant presence for the Church of Scotland, at the heart of a town centre which is scheduled for extensive redevelopment over the next 10-15 years. 'The building is cherished by many who have had associations with St Mungo's through rites of baptism and marriage and funeral services, as well as by generations of faithful worshippers, youth and children's organisations and other community groups.' Residents and worshippers alike took to social media to send well-wishes and prayers. Jamie Hepburn, MSP, said: "It is incredibly distressing to see another fire at an important building in the area so shortly after a similar at the [[Cumbernauld]] Theatre Cottage Building. "My thoughts are with the congregation at Cumbernauld Trinity Parish Church as they come to terms with this terrible incident at the St Mungo's Church building. "A local landmark of importance, this place of worship is linked to countless numbers of local families as a location for christenings, weddings and funerals. "And it has also served as an important hub for the wider community, hosting birthday parties for local children, community organisations and back in the day graduation ceremonies for students at our local college. The whole area is impacted by this terrible incident." 'Good' rating for council's children's services
Children's services has received good and outstanding Ofsted ratings following a council's "relentless ambition" to improve, inspectors have said. Gloucestershire County Council has historically had poor Ofsted ratings for the service, with the most recent one in 2022 stating that it required improvement. But a report published earlier said that under the current director of children's services "the pace of improvement has accelerated", adding "services are now judged to be good overall". Areas where improvement was still needed include the response to homelessness for 16 and 17 year olds and support for care leavers who are not employed or in education. "I'm pleased for two groups of people, children, young people and families who it assures are getting a good service from the county council, and the second is our staff who have worked so hard over a long period of time to get this," cabinet member for children's safeguarding and care Ben Evans said. It said: "Since the last inspection in 2022, when services were judged to require improvement, credible leaders, with strong corporate and political support, have been relentless in their ambition to improve children's lives." Three other areas received good ratings, which include the experiences of children and care leavers who need help and protection, as well as the overall effectiveness of the service. In response to the areas that still need addressing, the council said it has started working with those responsible for housing to improve homelessness for young people. It said it is also working with social enterprises to help find young people employment. The Liberal Democrats took over the administration in May but Mr Evans praised the Conservatives for getting the service into shape. "We've got a brilliant director of children's services and the previous Conservative administration - who I should be throwing pelters at - did a really good job," he added. 'Doubling efforts' The report pointed out foster carers are now "well supported and appreciated by the service". It comes after the BBC spoke to former foster families who had felt they had been let down by the service. Mr Evans admitted the service was not perfect and he was concerned to read the concerns of foster carers. He added he had been in touch with some as a result. The number of children in care has gone down but it has doubled in the last decade. The county council said it is coming up with innovative solutions to get the number down further. Mr Evans said they are "doubling efforts to recruit more foster carers" whilst looking at creating family hubs to prevent issues escalating and children ending up in care in the first place.
