Report: Broncos DL Zach Allen seeking $25 million per season

USA Today14-03-2025

Denver Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen is coming off the best season of his career, and he might soon be due for a big pay raise.
Allen was named a second-team All-Pro last season after posting career highs in tackles (61), quarterback hits (40) and sacks (8.5). Allen is now entering the final year of the three-year contract he signed in 2023 and he's set to earn $13.25 million in 2025.
Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette reported last week that Allen is seeking a "lucrative contract extension" in the neighborhood of $25 million per season. Allen's projected market value is about $22.1 million, according to Spotrac.com.
Allen, 27, certainly deserves a big raise, but he's not the only player seeking a new deal.
Two other key defenders -- defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers and pass rusher Nik Bonitto -- are also scheduled to become free agents in 2026, and they have made it clear with their social media activity that they want extensions sooner rather than later.
On offense, wide receiver Courtland Sutton is also entering the final year of his contract with a base salary of $13.5 million after earning $15.2 million last season. Sutton might want a raise -- and an extension to give him more long-term security.
Denver's front office will likely turn its attention toward in-house extensions once the bulk of free agency has wrapped up. We are tracking all the team's moves on Broncos Wire.

Bills Have One Issue That Could Destroy Super Bowl Hopes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After coming up just one win short of the Super Bowl last season, the Buffalo Bills are once again a top-tier contender entering the 2025 season. That has been the story for the franchise in recent years. Josh Allen and company have had multiple opportunities to get over the hump and into the big game. They simply have been unable to do it. This season, the roster is good enough once again. With Allen leading the way, the Bills are always going to be a team to watch. However, there are questions that need to be answered about Buffalo for the team to win it all. Read more: Bills GM Shares New James Cook Update Amid Contract Drama Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton took a look at the biggest flaw for top contenders. When it came to Buffalo, there is one glaring question that needs to be answered. He believes that a lack of star power around Allen in big moments is the team's biggest flaw. "The Bills shouldn't have to rely on Allen having an MVP year to reach the NFL mountaintop," Moton wrote. "If two-time Pro Bowl running back James Cook holds out in the summer after reporting to mandatory minicamp, Allen may not have the playmakers around him to get this team over the hump." Moton also continued on to reveal one player who could help fix the flaw. He thinks second-year wide receiver Keon Coleman is that guy. "If the second-year wideout can build on a rookie campaign in which he averaged 19.2 yards per catch, they may have the firepower to break through for a Super Bowl appearance," he wrote. They made a few moves, but they didn't swing big. Joey Bosa was the biggest offseason addition. While he's more than capable of being an elite pass rusher, there are always concerns about injuries with him. Offensively, Buffalo didn't do much to improve around Allen. It will be interesting to see if the tweaks the Bills made to the roster are enough. They were close to knocking off Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Perhaps they can finally get the job done in 2025. For more Buffalo Bills and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Broncos roster: OLB Nik Bonitto (No. 15) aims for another big season in contract year

Broncos roster: OLB Nik Bonitto (No. 15) aims for another big season in contract year Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, No. 15. Before the Broncos: Nik Bonitto played for four years at the University of Oklahoma from 2018-21. Over his four-year tenure, Bonitto earned three honors: AP third-team All-American (2021), second-team All-Big 12 (2021) and second-team All-American (2020). Over 40 games played, Bonitto recorded 117 tackles (68 solo, 49 assisted, 35 tackles for loss), 18.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and seven pass deflections. Bonitto was selected in the second round (64th overall) of the 2022 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. Broncos tenure: Bonitto had a rocky rookie season, playing in 15 games, only starting one game and totaling 14 tackles (six solo, eight assisted, one for loss), one forced fumble and 1.5 sacks, hardly the type of year the Broncos were hoping for from their highest draft pick in 2022. Bonttio took a step forward in 2023, a year in which he started four games. Bonitto upped his sack total to 8.0, made 30 tackles (23 solo, seven assisted, 13 tackles for loss), two pass deflections and one forced fumble. If 2023 was a step forward, 2024 was an explosion, and one every bit as much as the Broncos were hoping for when they drafted Bonitto in 2022. Bonitto started 15 games, totaling 48 tackles (33 solo, 15 assisted, 16 tackles for loss, 24 QB hits), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Bonitto's fumble recovery and interception both went for touchdowns. Bonitto's huge jump earned him a Pro Bowl nod, as well as second-team All-Pro honors. Chances to make the 53-man roster: 100 percent. Bonitto had a breakout year in 2024, and is in the middle of contract extension talks with the Denver front office to keep him with the Broncos for the foreseeable future. Bonitto is primed for another big year in 2025, and Broncos Country is excited to see what the future holds. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Former Boston Celtics champion doesn't believe in Cooper Flagg hype

There are talented players as part of the 2025 NBA Draft, but as expected, Cooper Flagg continues be the consensus No. 1 pick. So when the Mavericks improbably won the draft lottery for a chance to select Flagg, heads turned after they had just traded Luka Doncic. Dallas gets a chance at another potential franchise-changing player. But former Celtics champion Tony Allen disagrees — he doesn't see the Flagg hype. In an appearance on the Chris Vernon show, Allen revealed his thoughts on the Duke product. Advertisement 'I don't think Cooper Flagg is going to turn your franchise around like that,' Allen said. 'And I'm serious. He's nice. I ain't seeing (Kevin Durant). I'm just not seeing all that. I'm seeing Andrei Kirilenko. That's what I'm seeing, and he can hoop.' Now, there's good reason why Flagg projects so well at the next level. The 18-year-old won a majority of National Player of the Year awards after a stellar season leading Duke to the Final Four. Considering he's still a teenager and dominated the college ranks, where players are increasingly older, is also a positive sign. Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in his 37 games for the Blue Devils. He also projects well defensively at 6-foot-9 as he still has a lot of growing to do since he's so young. While Flagg isn't as hyped a prospect like the Spurs' Victor Wembanyama, there's a reason why NBA teams rate Flagg so highly. But Allen disagrees. The former C's guard won it all with the team in 2008 as he was one of the best defenders of his time. Allen was named NBA All-Defensive team six times in his career and played 14 years in the league. Advertisement Now, no disrespect to Kirilenko, who enjoyed a long 13-year NBA career himself. Kirilenko was an All-Star in 2004 and was named to three All-Defensive teams. Allen's point is that he doesn't see Flagg as a Durant-level player, but more a longtime pro who could make an All-Star team or two in his career. So Allen is not saying Flagg will be a complete bust, but that he won't change a franchise and live up to the hype. Flagg looks the part of big-time NBA player, but he'll have to prove it after he gets drafted next month. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
