The eThekwini Municipality admitted that the cost and effort of maintaining publicly owned sports fields in the Chatsworth community, south of Durban, have been passed over to private residents.
The Municipality was vague when answering questions about where exactly the funds and former employees who tended to community sports fields had disappeared to. This followed an inspection of over six football fields in the community. The football fields visited were in areas including Havenside, Bayview, Westcliff, Woodhurst, Moorton and Croftdene.
During the visit, representatives from the Chatsworth Local Football Association and Greenstroke Football Club attested to the poor conditions into which municipal fields have fallen. Both the Chairman of the Chatsworth LFA and Greenstroke Football Club said the eThekwini Municipality's effort and level of upkeep of community sports fields are 'barely non-existent.'
They said years of complaints and requests have fallen on deaf ears.

There are only three sports fields with functional ablution facilities in Chatsworth, all of which have been paid for and taken over by football clubs in the LFA, said Sphinx Kuppen, President of the Chatsworth LFA.
Kuppen said the Chatsworth LFA, local sponsors and the football clubs themselves have taken control of these three facilities.
"The Municipality just wants to say they own this place, but they don't do a damn thing to take care of it," Kuppen told Independent Media at the 1009 grounds in Woodhurst.
The eThekwini Municipality has effectively shifted the burden of maintaining its own public assets like football fields onto the football clubs and local football associations themselves, he explained.
But this week, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City allocates a minimal budget for upkeep and maintenance.
"Does the City have a budget for upkeep of municipally owned sports fields around the City? If so, what is it?" we asked.
'Yes, the City allocates a minimal operational budget to the various districts around the City,' Sisilana said.
During our tour of Greenstroke FC's training ground in Westcliff, called '306 grounds', club chairman Kelvin Munsamy said the only time the grass is watered is when it rains. Munsamy showed us around the field and the abandoned change room.
'If you look around you, you can see the condition of the surface we play on. It's mostly sand and dust with some weeds and grass in between. The eThekwini Municipality never waters the pitch. The only time it gets water is when it rains and when that happens it becomes waterlogged for days on end. It's just always something going wrong.
'I remember when I first joined this club, there used to be officials from our municipality stationed at this ground. Not just here, but all over Chatsworth. And their sole purpose was maintaining the grounds,' Munsamy said.

"They even had working tractors back then. All of that is now gone and it's like that entire budget they had disappeared as well. The community never receives answers but are always told they have no money. So I think the eThekwini Municipality has completely failed the Chatsworth community when it comes to something as simple as our sports fields."
Kuppen also confirmed that the designated municipal officials "disappeared over the years".
When asked about the designated maintenance staff that used to be stationed at community sports fields, Sisilana admitted that the Municipality had abdicated its duties to taxpayers.
'The current sports fields team has a handful of employees whose focus is to maintain the pitch (actual playing field). A request for more funds has been submitted to enhance capacity, thus improving service delivery.
'The Municipality has started filling vacancies again where funds are available,' Sisilana said.

Edwill van der Merwe looks to continue scoring spree in first Rugby Championship Test at Ellis Park

Springbok winger Edwill van der Merwe will play his first Test at Ellis Park on Saturday in the Rugby Championship against Australia. Image: BackpagePix Edwill van der Merwe will have the opportunity to continue his try-scoring prowess on Saturday in the opening round of the Rugby Championship against Australia at his former hunting ground in Johannesburg. No Bok player has ever scored in their first four matches, and the 29-year-old Van der Merwe will have that opportunity when he runs onto the field alongside an experienced side for the first of two Tests against the Wallabies (5.10 pm start). Springbok greats like Jacques Fourie, Bryan Habana, Makazole Mapimpi, and Joost van der Westhuizen all failed to score in their first four games, with Fourie coming closest by dotting down in his first three. Habana, Van der Westhuizen and Mapimpi blanked in their third games. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ After three Tests, Van der Merwe currently has five tries, and he can claim the sole record on Saturday at Ellis Park should he score again. However, that will definitely not be the focus for the speedster from Kylemore in Stellenbosch. He will just look to contribute wherever he can to help secure a crucial starting win for the world champions. They will look to defend their Rugby Championship title this year. Van der Merwe will be facing the Wallabies for the first time, and it will be his first Test at Ellis Park. His previous matches were against Wales, Italy and Georgia. 'I don't think there is any pressure on me to continue scoring tries,' the winger said about his exploits behind the poles. On the verge of rewriting history ✍️ No Springbok player has ever scored in his first four matches, with a few coming close.. Edwill van der Merwe will look to become the first when he takes to the field in his next game 👀#SSRugby | #TheRugbyChampionship — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) August 5, 2025 'My main thing is to look after my systems on the side and scoring a try is a bonus. Playing next to guys who like to move the ball helps. I like to get the ball in space. Hopefully, the try scoring can continue. 'I am facing Australia, so it will be a bigger challenge, but one I am looking forward to. As a youngster, watching the Rugby Championship, it was always a big focus when you went into this competition. So, I am looking forward to getting stuck into things and getting used to what it is like facing them.' He looks forward to running out at Ellis Park, which he dubbed one of his favourite grounds to play on alongside the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch. According to Van der Merwe, the move from Cape Town – where he didn't get a lot of game time – to Johannesburg and the Lions was probably the best he made for his career. Although he's traded Ellis Park for King's Park in Durban recently, he harbours fond memories of playing in Johannesburg. What a way to start the week! Check out the #Springboks team to face Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday 🔥#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 11, 2025 He became Springbok 935 at the Lions. While the likes of Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Makazole Mapimpi have been outstanding on the wing for the Boks, Van der Merwe is slowly but surely putting his name in the hat to become a regular in the setup. 'We are in a really healthy position and privileged to have this amount of competition in the squad. The nice thing is that everyone helps everyone to be their best for the Springboks. I am just learning as much as possible to add to my game. 'The challenge of becoming a Springbok and staying here is very difficult. Every day we go out on the field for training is a new opportunity and a challenge to get better. Whether I am playing or not, it is to attack every session and ensure I improve. When the day is finished, I can say I got better. That is where my focus is.'

Abdeslam Ouaddou's rocky start at Orlando Pirates raises early questions

ORLANDO Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou facing tought times as some fans are already calling for his head after two consecutive league losses. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Orlando Pirates are not where they want to be in the Betway Premiership, and new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is largely to blame for that. Pirates lost 2–1 to Marumo Gallants on Tuesday, their second defeat in succession after losing the season opener to Sekhukhune United. That was not supposed to happen. Pirates were expected to challenge for the title, but they have failed to get off the mark as anticipated. The club invested heavily in the team, returning to Marbella, Spain, for their pre-season camp for the third year in a row. And that's not all — they also strengthened their squad with new signings, including Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli, Oswin Appollis, and Kamogelo Sebelele. The new players were expected to take time to settle in, but such was Ouaddou's belief in them that he has thrown many straight into the deep end. Perhaps therein lies the problem: placing too much trust in the newcomers while sidelining senior players. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Deano van Rooyen were among Pirates' best performers last season, helping them win the MTN8 and finish second in the league. Yet they don't seem to feature prominently in Ouaddou's plans. Makgopa has made the matchday squad in the last two games, while Mabasa and Van Rooyen remain absent. The absence of these experienced players could hamper Pirates' progress this season, especially as they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-final first leg on Saturday. Pirates have beaten Sundowns in back-to-back MTN8 encounters, but they have always relied on players with big-match temperament. Monnapule Saleng was the standout performer in the semi-finals three seasons ago, while goalkeeper Sipho Chaine shone in the final two seasons ago. Yes, new heroes could emerge in the upcoming two-legged semi-final, but as the saying goes: if it's not broken, don't fix it. Ouaddou needs to ensure that senior players return to the team. Doing so will not only increase their chances of winning but also help restore the fans' faith in him. When the Moroccan-born coach arrived, he was expected to succeed, particularly given his impressive short spell with Gallants. Now that he has struggled to hit the ground running at Pirates, there are already calls for him to be sacked. His squad selection has been questioned by sections of the Ghost, who feel he is failing to deliver on his promise of building on the foundation laid by José Riveiro.

Tshegofatso Mabasa exit rumours grow as Orlando Pirates struggle without star striker

Left out Orlando Pirates' top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Tshegofatso Mabasa, was absent from the squad in their league loss to Sekhukhune United on Saturday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Orlando Pirates are facing the real possibility of losing star striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, with clubs across the continent circling. Despite being Pirates' top goalscorer for the last two seasons, Mabasa has not made the matchday squad for any of the club's games so far this season. After leaving him out of the league opener against Sekhukhune United, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou explained that he was left out due to a selection decision. In his place, 22-year-old Boitumelo Radiopane was selected to start, with 23-year-old Yanela Mbuthuma playing off the bench. The absence of Mabasa has led to struggles for Pirates. They were beaten 1-0 by Sekhukhune last weekend and lost 2-1 to Marumo Gallants on Tuesday, increasing the pressure on the new coach. Next Stay Close ✕ These early setbacks have coincided with speculation over Mabasa's future, with his agent, Gary Cassisa, confirming there is interest in the 28-year-old. "Yes, there has been interest from Mas Fez," said Cassisa. For a side already short on goals, losing their most reliable finisher could prove disastrous. 'But Tshegofatso Mabasa remains committed to Orlando Pirates only. He is closing in on the club's all-time leading goalscorer record and would like to make history with the Soweto giants," said the agent, as quoted by Soccer Laduma. With the club taking on Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals of the MTN8 this weekend, Pirates will need to be at their best as they look to win the competition for a fourth straight season. Whether Mabasa is involved remains to be seen. Pirates' fate in the MTN8 could hinge on how they cope without their talisman. If Mabasa is absent, Ouaddou will need his squad to step up and find new ways to create and convert chances. The clash with Sundowns will not only test the team's depth and resilience but could also set the tone for how Pirates navigate a season shadowed by uncertainty over one of their most influential players.
