Edwill van der Merwe will have the opportunity to continue his try-scoring prowess on Saturday in the opening round of the Rugby Championship against Australia at his former hunting ground in Johannesburg.
No Bok player has ever scored in their first four matches, and the 29-year-old Van der Merwe will have that opportunity when he runs onto the field alongside an experienced side for the first of two Tests against the Wallabies (5.10 pm start).
Springbok greats like Jacques Fourie, Bryan Habana, Makazole Mapimpi, and Joost van der Westhuizen all failed to score in their first four games, with Fourie coming closest by dotting down in his first three. Habana, Van der Westhuizen and Mapimpi blanked in their third games.

After three Tests, Van der Merwe currently has five tries, and he can claim the sole record on Saturday at Ellis Park should he score again. However, that will definitely not be the focus for the speedster from Kylemore in Stellenbosch. He will just look to contribute wherever he can to help secure a crucial starting win for the world champions.
They will look to defend their Rugby Championship title this year.
Van der Merwe will be facing the Wallabies for the first time, and it will be his first Test at Ellis Park. His previous matches were against Wales, Italy and Georgia.
'I don't think there is any pressure on me to continue scoring tries,' the winger said about his exploits behind the poles.
On the verge of rewriting history ✍️
No Springbok player has ever scored in his first four matches, with a few coming close..

'My main thing is to look after my systems on the side and scoring a try is a bonus. Playing next to guys who like to move the ball helps. I like to get the ball in space. Hopefully, the try scoring can continue.
'I am facing Australia, so it will be a bigger challenge, but one I am looking forward to. As a youngster, watching the Rugby Championship, it was always a big focus when you went into this competition. So, I am looking forward to getting stuck into things and getting used to what it is like facing them.'
He looks forward to running out at Ellis Park, which he dubbed one of his favourite grounds to play on alongside the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.
According to Van der Merwe, the move from Cape Town – where he didn't get a lot of game time – to Johannesburg and the Lions was probably the best he made for his career. Although he's traded Ellis Park for King's Park in Durban recently, he harbours fond memories of playing in Johannesburg.
What a way to start the week! Check out the #Springboks team to face Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday 🔥#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 11, 2025
He became Springbok 935 at the Lions.
While the likes of Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Makazole Mapimpi have been outstanding on the wing for the Boks, Van der Merwe is slowly but surely putting his name in the hat to become a regular in the setup.
'We are in a really healthy position and privileged to have this amount of competition in the squad. The nice thing is that everyone helps everyone to be their best for the Springboks. I am just learning as much as possible to add to my game.
'The challenge of becoming a Springbok and staying here is very difficult. Every day we go out on the field for training is a new opportunity and a challenge to get better. Whether I am playing or not, it is to attack every session and ensure I improve. When the day is finished, I can say I got better. That is where my focus is.'

Wallabies coach on Bok innovations: ‘Why not?'
'If he can test the boundaries and get a strategic and tactical advantage with the athletes that he has at his disposal, why not?' Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt believes that, apart from innovations that break the laws of rugby, there's no reason the Springboks shouldn't implement ideas that give them an edge. Schmidt was speaking to media after announcing his team for the opening Rugby Championship clash between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm). Bok coach Rassie Erasmus popularised the 6–2 bench split, though on Saturday the Springboks will use a 5–3 split and the Wallabies a 6–2, due to the late injury of flyhalf Ben Donaldson. Queried on the trademark innovations Erasmus has used, Schmidt replied, 'Why not?' and said he would love to be a fly on the wall when such ideas are discussed. 'A great man for testing the boundaries' Just four matches into this season and the Boks have already employed a few. Traditional centre André Esterhuizen packed down at flank in the opening game against the Barbarians. A 'hybrid player', Esterhuizen played flank in attack and dropped to centre in defence. Then, in the second Test against Italy, the Boks played a short kick-off to induce a scrum, and introduced the world to the midfield 'fake lineout' maul from open play. The latter led to a try, while World Rugby later deemed the former an intentional infringement. Still, Erasmus said ahead of the Rugby Championship that they have a few tricks up their sleeves. 'I think there are some where it may be stretching things … which then comes down to a sanction other than a scrum. He's a great man for testing the boundaries, isn't he?' Schmidt chuckled, referring to Erasmus. 'If he can test the boundaries and get a strategic and tactical advantage with the athletes that he has at his disposal, why not?' Schmidt praises Bok coaches, players ahead of clash Schmidt described Springbok assistant coaches Tony Brown and Felix Jones as smart, innovative coaches. 'I think the three of them together have some pretty good coaching meetings where they come up with pretty good ideas. If anyone's got a recording of those meetings I'd love to get them.' He said while he admired the Springboks and had learned much from them regarding blooding players to create depth, the Wallabies were still in a restructuring stage. 'We're still trying to get the fundamentals right and not stretch things to the boundary too much.' The Wallabies coach said Brown had added width to the South African game, improving the movement and structure of their game. 'You will even see them go side to side very quickly. They've got some very efficient passing, capability. With a guy like Manie Libbok, I still remember clearly that no-look kick-pass that he did against Scotland in the World Cup. 'I'm expecting that they will be really strong in the set-piece, as they always are. Their kick-chase game will be very strong. 'On any turnover, or any bit of space they get, they've got lethal finishers. With Kurt-Lee Arendse, Edwill van der Merwe, Jesse Kriel, such a strong player, André Esterhuizen.' He said the Springboks have an 'abundance of talent' who were capable of out-muscling, out-speeding and out-skilling their opponents. 'We will just have to be a lot better than we were in that last Lions Test because not just because who we are playing but where we are,' he said.

Boland Cavaliers aim for victory with strategic player rotation against Bulls
Loose forward Thurlow Marsh will captain the Boland Cavaliers in the absence of Marlyn Williams when they face the Bulls on Sunday in Wellington in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Boland Cavaliers will want to avoid a see-saw Currie Cup performance by building on their recent win over the Lions when they take on the Bulls in Wellington on Sunday. It will be their final round-robin game at the Boland Stadium (3 pm start) and one the team must make count if they want to stay in contention for a playoff in front of their rowdy supporters later in the tournament. They've won the first match, then lost, and most recently picked up another victory. So, if they have another dip in performance after a good win, it will undo the hard work of last weekend. Fresh off that bonus-point win over the Lions, the Cavaliers will look to take the scalp of another big team to continue their winning spree. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Hawies Fourie, Boland coach, opted to rotate some of his players, wanting to give game time to those on the fringes and some players returning from injury. The selection of his two form props, Dayan van der Westhuizen and Wayrin Losper, on the bench is also an interesting choice. However, they can provide a game-changing impact in the second half. 'It was a bit of a balancing act,' Fourie said about the changes. 'We want to build continuity, but we also want to keep the squad fresh. I feel we have to reward players who are close to (making) the team and training well.' Livewire flanker Sbusiso Sangweni has recovered from his ankle injury and slots into the No 7 jersey, but captain Marlyn Williams will miss the crucial clash due to a facial injury. Former Stormers lock Jurie van Vuuren will get a run in the lock jersey in the place of Williams. Eighth man Thurlow Marsh will captain the side. The starting backline that ran the Lions' defence to shreds is unchanged after Donavan Don was cleared to play following a slight niggle after scoring two tries last weekend. 'Continuity is always important in a team, so I feel we are keeping the core of the team the same. But we will continue to rotate in certain positions where we feel the players will help the team perform better. Boks will be at full throttle, says Kriel
Hard yards on the training pitch will ensure South Africa are operating at full throttle when they kick off their Rugby Championship campaign against Australia in Johannesburg on Saturday, says Jesse Kriel. A capacity 62,000 crowd will be baying for Springbok tries in the cauldron of Ellis Park in what promises to be a rousing opener (kickoff 5.10pm). In recent years, the Boks have exerted total dominance over Australia and are hunting for a fifth successive Rugby Championship victory over the visitors. Kriel said the Boks are ready to return to the standard of play that earned them respect and success throughout the rugby playing world. 'We have very high standards in the environment and there is also good competition in each position, so we spent the past few weeks working on our conditioning and match detail,' he said. 'Thanks to work on the training field, we are confident about our level of preparation. Training was very tough and we all know the game is getting quicker and more physical.
