China Market Update: Mainland Stock Market Cap Hits 10-Year High
Asian equities started the week mixed as Shenzhen and Mainland China-listed growth stocks outperformed, while South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand underperformed and Indonesia was closed for Independence Day. The total value of Mainland China's stock market (i.e., Shanghai and Shenzhen) exceeded RMB 100 trillion for the first time ever, as today's volume was 190% of the 1-year average. Mainland and Hong Kong-listed brokerage stocks, not surprisingly, had a strong day. Mainland China experienced a very broad rally, led by growth stocks and small caps, as the STAR Board gained +2.14% versus the Shanghai, which gained +0.85%. Hong Kong was slightly more mixed, though growth stocks and subsectors saw gains, including Alibaba, which gained +0.42%, which gained +2.65%, and which gained +1.80%. However, Tencent fell -0.84% and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) fell -0.43%. Alibaba will announce its second quarter financial results after the close in Hong Kong on Friday, August 29th. Friday earnings releases always make me a bit nervous, especially considering that the release will be during a three-day weekend in the US. Hong Kong-listed value stocks had a rough day, as banks, oil, metals & mining, and REITs were all off. A Mainland media headline announced that China's bond market 'collapsed', which is a massive exaggeration, though local investors are clearly rebalancing an element of their savings from bonds to stocks, as China's 10 Year Treasury price was RMB 99.32 versus the June 17th high of RMB 100.33. The 10-year Treasury Yield is now 1.79% versus the year-to-date (YTD) low of 1.59% on January 6th. Over the weekend, The Economic Observer noted that the Mainland market might be entering a 'structural revaluation process', driven by the 'dual recovery channel of 'profit and valuation', as consumption recovers, driving profits higher. Today's big news item post close was that Premier Li and the State Council held the Ninth Plenary Meeting, focused on how to '…consolidate and expand the momentum of economic recovery and improvement and strive to complete the annual economic and social development goals and tasks.' While acknowledging economic challenges, the State Council said it will 'continuously stimulate consumption potential', grow 'service consumption and new consumption', and 'Take effective measures to consolidate the trend of stopping the decline and stabilizing the real estate market.' It is hard not to notice the emphasis on consumption, right? Zhejiang province coincidentally announced the "Three-Year Action Plan to Accelerate the Development of the First Store Economy (2025-2027)" comprised of 50 store clusters with 2,000 stores of which 200 being 'high-level'. Meanwhile, Hubei Province announced retail sales of consumer goods increased +6.2% year-over-year (YoY) YTD, led by sales of household appliances, which increased +72.2%, smart appliances, which increased +42.3%, and furniture, which increased +62.6%. The Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce announced the replacement of its auto subsidy with another RMB 300 million after buyers used up the initial RMB 300 million allocated. Unitree won eleven medals in the World Humanoid Robot Games, followed by X-Humanoid's ten medals. Mainland media noted that a US trip to India to negotiate a trade deal has been cancelled. Are you worried that you missed the China rally? US-listed China equity ETF flows are still at a net outflow of -845 million, YTD. Modi gives tax boon to India's economy amid Trump tariff tensions
Indian markets rallied on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recently revealed tax cuts extended a gift to a domestic economy that still faces the teeth of U.S. tariffs. The Nifty 50 index advanced 1%, with the BSE Sensex adding 0.84%. In currencies, the U.S. dollar surrendered 0.18% against the rupee. In an extensive Independence Day speech on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a concerted push for self-reliance and proposed a spate of financial reforms. New Delhi now plans a two-rate structure of 5% and 18% under wide-spanning changes to the goods and services tax (GST) regime, and plans to abolish the previous 12% and 28% levies imposed on some items, Reuters cited a government official as saying on Friday. The news was also reported by local media. "The reforms aim to simplify compliance, lower tax rates, and modernise the GST framework to make it more growth-oriented. Industry executives expect measures such as rationalising rates into two slabs, easing the tax burden on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), cutting levies on essential goods, and using technology-driven processes like pre-filled returns and faster refunds to encourage investment," the India Brand Equity Foundation said, adding that manufacturing, logistics, housing and consumer goods could stand to gain. India's autos industry could also emerge as one of the beneficiaries of the new tax policies after a sluggish stretch in recent months. Sales of India's passenger vehicles, which include cars, added 4.2% percent in the 2024 calendar year, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said in January – the slowest growth pace in four years, according to Reuters. Auto sector stocks saw increases during the Monday session, as Maruti Suzuki India adding 8.75%, while Hyundai Motor India rose by 8.15%. "I'm certainly positive about the announcement, and the autos sector being a relative laggard in recent quarters, so not surprising to see that sector bounce back quite strongly," James Thom, senior investment director on the Asian equities team at Aberdeen, told CNBC's "Inside India on Monday." Modi's tax overhaul could shore up India's economy, which the Reserve Bank of India sees growing 6.5% in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, at a time of deep geopolitical uncertainty stoked by Washington's sweeping so-called "reciprocal tariffs." New Delhi in particular has fallen in the crosshairs of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration over its ongoing purchases of Russian crude, with Washington imposing an additional 25% levy on Indian imports — bringing total duties to 50% — due to take effect at the end of this month. "India is a domestic consumption story. Exports is a relatively small contributor. So this [tax overhaul] could more than offset that impact of tariffs," Aberdeen's Thom said. "From a fundamental standpoint, absolutely, I think the changes to the GST regime will be supportive near-term for consumption as it comes through later in the year. And consumption has been weak in India for quite some time now, so this is a real sort of boost to the economy, if you like, given India's economy is so dependent on domestic consumption." Domestic intake is "one of the most compelling indicators investors are closely monitoring," and the "largest driver of economic growth in India," with a 61.4% GDP contribution in the 2024-25 fiscal year, Deloitte said in an August report. "Notably, urban consumption and a shift in spending preferences toward luxury goods are emerging as key pillars of this momentum," it said. India Ratings & Research meanwhile forecast India's private final consumption rate in the fiscal year to the end of March 2026 will expand by an annual 6.9%, outpacing a broader 6.3% GDP growth outlook over the period, on the back of low real wage increases, declines in household savings and a boost to personal loans. "A sharp decline in inflation has improved the prospects for stable consumption growth in FY26," it added. India's retail inflation has slowed from 4.31% in January to its lowest since 2017 at 1.55% in July.

Auto stocks rally: Hero MotoCorp jumps 8.29%, Maruti Suzuki up 7.28%, TVS Motor rises 6.24% as Government plans GST relief for cars and two-wheelers
The Indian auto sector surged sharply in early trade on Monday, with leading automobile stocks witnessing strong gains after reports suggested that the Government of India is considering a major relief package for car and two-wheeler buyers under a new Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. As of 9:45 AM, auto stocks were trading with significant momentum: Hero MotoCorp rose 8.29% to ₹5,098.50 Maruti Suzuki jumped 7.28% to ₹13,878.00 Ashok Leyland gained 6.80% to ₹130.25 Hyundai Motor India advanced 6.32% to ₹2,382.30 TVS Motor moved up 6.24% to ₹3,208.70 Bajaj Auto climbed 4.88% to ₹8,614.00 Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) rose 4.50% to ₹3,412.40 Eicher Motors added 3.83% to ₹5,985.00 Tata Motors gained 2.54% to ₹681.50 The rally comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, hinted at a possible reduction in GST rates for cars, SUVs, and two-wheelers. Currently, small cars attract 28% GST plus a cess of 1–3%, while SUVs are taxed at nearly 50% (including cess). New GST Regime on the Horizon According to reports, the government plans to introduce a simplified GST structure with two tax slabs: Merit and Standard. The Merit category will feature goods with GST up to 5% . The Standard category is expected to attract 18% GST. The government is also considering scrapping the current definition of SUVs for GST classification, which has long been a point of confusion for automakers. Apart from the automobile sector, the proposed GST rejig could also bring relief to consumers of air conditioners and construction materials.
