'They're not doing well': Trump calls tariffs on India over Russian oil 'big blow' to Moscow; vows more pressure
NEW DELHI: US President
Donald Trump
on Tuesday claimed that his tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil delivered a "big blow" to Moscow's economy.
Addressing a press briefing, Trump referred to India as Russia's 'largest or second-largest oil buyer" and asserted that the 50% tariffs on India have hit the Russian economy hard.
He linked Russia's economic challenges to the ongoing conflict, emphasising that the US's 50 per cent tariff on countries buying Russian oil had a substantial impact. Alluding to India, Trump remarked, "Their economy is not doing well right now because it's been very well disturbed by this. It doesn't help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we're putting a 50 per cent tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia.
That was a big blow."

Trump mentioned he was ready to take further measures but received a call from Putin. "I haven't stopped there. I mean, look, I was all set to do things far bigger than that. But I got a call that they'd like to meet, and I'm going to see what they want to meet about."
He described the upcoming meeting with Russia as a "big deal," stating, "I'll be calling the European leaders. They're tired of it (the Russia-Ukraine war).

They want to get back to spending money on their countries. They want to get back to building their own countries. They want it resolved."
The tariffs on India, imposed by Trump, have been a contentious issue between the two nations. The US has levied a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing India's oil imports from Russia.
The ministry of external affairs in a statement called the US move 'unfortunate' and reiterated its stand that India would continue to protect its national interests. In a strongly worded statement, the MEA said, "..it is extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest."

Cisco projects upbeat quarterly revenue as AI fuels networking equipment demand
Reuters Cisco Systems forecast first-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, as the artificial intelligence boom boosted demand for its networking equipment from cloud customers. Hyperscale cloud investments are healthy and driving IT infrastructure financing, which sets up a good backdrop for Cisco. "Within the enterprise spending environment, there is incremental spending to beef up the infrastructure to accommodate AI, so that could potentially be another growth driver, especially with Cisco having such a big presence in the traditional enterprise market," Edward Jones analyst David Heger said. Big tech firms such as Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet are ramping up spending to ease capacity shortages that have limited their ability to meet AI demand, even after several quarters of multi-billion-dollar outlays. Cisco's AI infrastructure orders exceeded $800 million in the fourth quarter, bringing the total for fiscal 2025 to over $2 billion, more than double its original target, CEO Chuck Robbins said on a post-earnings call. The company has not seen any pull-forward in demand for products, but did note a small impact from tariffs in the quarter and during the fiscal year, he added. "We expect the sovereign AI opportunity to build momentum in the second half of fiscal 2026. Cisco will be a core system provider for these significant AI training and inference cluster build outs and integral to their development and eventual hyperscaling." Cisco has partnered with Humain, Saudi Arabia's state-backed AI company, and it will provide digital solutions for Bahrain's government information and telecommunications infrastructure. The company expects revenue to be between $14.65 billion and $14.85 billion for the first quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $14.62 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its revenue for the fourth quarter ended July 26 came in at $14.67 billion, compared with estimates of $14.62 billion. Networking product orders grew in the double digits during the quarter, driven by webscale infrastructure, switching, enterprise routing, industrial IoT and servers. No Zelenskyy in Trump-Putin talks: Will Ukraine be allowed to choose its own destiny?
Zelenskyy's absence at a meeting that seeks to end the long-drawn-out war in Ukraine is being perceived as a futile exercise by observers across the world, with many saying that negotiations for a ceasefire cannot happen without Kyiv's presence Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would not be attending Friday's Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, where discussions will be ironically centred around the Ukraine war. Zelenskyy's absence at a meeting that seeks to end the long-drawn-out war in Ukraine is being perceived as a futile exercise by observers across the world, with many saying that negotiations for a ceasefire cannot happen without Kyiv's presence. Ukraine's non-attendance at the summit has also sparked concerns among European leaders about the country's future role in potential negotiations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Europe rallies for Ukrainian interests Zelensky flew to Berlin on Wednesday and met Merz before they both joined other European leaders for talks with Trump ahead of his planned summit with Putin in Alaska on Friday. Other leaders on the call included French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the heads of the European Union and NATO. Merz said a ceasefire 'must be the starting point' and that negotiations must include robust security guarantees for Kyiv and 'be part of a joint transatlantic strategy'. He said 'Ukraine is ready to negotiate on territorial issues' but also that 'legal recognition of Russian occupations is not up for debate' and that 'the principle that borders may not be changed by force must continue to apply'. 'There is hope for movement, there is hope for peace in Ukraine,' he said. A second call has been planned involving Trump, Vance, and Zelenskyy to follow up on talks with European leaders. Russia's demands and fears of painful concessions Putin is expected to push for firm terms, including Russia retaining control of occupied Ukrainian regions, Ukraine dropping plans to join Nato, and new elections in affected Ukrainian areas. Meanwhile, Trump has once again shifted his tone, warning Putin that Russia will face 'very severe consequences' if it does not agree to the Ukraine truce deals. At the same time, the US president has himself indicated that his talks with Putin might not yield any real results and that it will be a 'feel-out' meeting to test Putin's terms to sign a temporary ceasefire. Uncertain prospects for peace While some hope Trump's efforts could hasten an end to the war, scepticism abounds. Many analysts see the summit as more symbolic and unlikely to produce lasting resolutions, especially without Ukraine at the negotiating table. Also, the choice of Alaska, historically linked to both the US and Russia, adds symbolic heft to the meeting. For Putin, appearing alongside Trump on US soil signals a restoration of Russia's global standing. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With inputs from agencies
